Should The King’s visit to America be postponed?

The visit is due sometime next month. America, at Trump’s instigation, is involved in a war seen by much of the world, as illegal. Mt Trump has been extremely rude and provocative to European leaders, especially to Keir Starmer.
If the visit goes ahead, I fear Mr T is so narcissistic, he’d see it as our Monarchy supporting him.
It’s been suggested the King could say his doctors advised against the visit. The decision though, should rest with the government, rather than expose the King to the possibility of being political
What to do?

I think he should postpone "due to the current situation"
He should say that he "ought" to stay here.

I would not make "health" excuses.

Thanks for that, underlines what I was saying, the unpredictability and utter rudeness of the president in front of anyone prepared to listen does not bode well for a Royal visit. Tbh I think Trump realises the war was a huge miscalculation and costly mistake and is now just increasingly petulant.

Even if The King manages to come to a compromise with Trump it will make no difference as Trump will change his mind as soon as they return, or say that it was all lies, he is that type of person, he constantly twist things to suit his own ends.

Trump is likely to be extremely rude to Charles which would be a huge mistake. He's so unpredictable. I haven't forgotten how he treated Zelensky. Also, very difficult for the poor King to deal with.

He wouldn’t dare treat the king like Zelensky. He puts such emphasis on his high regard for our monarchy that he would simply make a fool of himself.

The reason Charles is going is to celebrate America’s independence from Britain so the whole thing is a bit bizarre anyway.

I could imagine Trump publicly criticising Keir Starmer, in front of the cameras with KC at his side, at some dinner or other.

This would put KC in an extremely difficult position - having his country’s PM publicly maligned whilst ‘protocol’ would prevent him from intervening.

If this happened, I’d love KC to say “whoa, shut the f* up, you orange man-baby.”

Charlie would NEVER say that, of course, but one can dream …

🤣🤣 Well said
I too can imagine Trump not being able to rein in his mouth when it comes to the PM in front of the King and others.
Is putting the King in an impossible situation which he shouldn’t have to face.
It was bad enough to see the Taoiseach cringing when he met Trump the other day.
Trump should never have a job that entails him speaking in front of others.

Or speaking period.

I don't have an opinion on him coming, but I just have this image in my head of the King standing near Trump and thinking, how did that whole independence thing work out for you Yanks? grin

It's going to be a long summer on my side of the pond listening to him lie to himself and his supporters that we are the greatest country in the world. Sigh.

My own feeling is that the King’s visit there will pour oil on troubled waters.

Strange turn of phrase.

Surely Trump is far too busy these days?

That's exactly why he won't be going.

He would twist any visit into full-blown support for the war - I can imagine him starting a speech with "it's damn fine of Your Majesty to give me your seal of approval.........."

Incidentally: didn't Mister President claim to have won the war about a week ago? Maybe someone needs to tell Netanyahu. He seems completely out of control and is blasting the Middle East to bits.

Did Mister President imagine he could control him?

Do sixandahalf and butterandjam know what pouring oil on troubled waters means?😉

Well you’re far from the worst, so there is that😃

I think the visit should be postponed indefinitely. We don't have a 'special relationship' with America and haven't had for a long time.

King Charles is the head of our armed forces; when you insult them, you insult him and they swear their allegiance to him, not the POTUS.

Oreo Wed 18-Mar-26 18:37:06

It doesn’t matter what we think tho does it? It will be a diplomatic decision and which is already fully planned as part of the Independence celebrations there.

They broke away from, gained their independence from Great Britain, so why do we need to be part of their Independence celebrations? 🤔

Trump's made a fool of himself so many times over the course of his last presidency & this one, don't think he's even aware how foolish he sounds. He's just preaching to the converted & ridicule from anyone else just slides off. So I don't think we can rely on him being polite to King Charles.

Norah Wed 18-Mar-26 20:02:32

Why in the world would their independence celebrations matter to the King and Queen or even the United Kingdom?

My ten year old grandson was here earlier, doing an excellent Trump imitation 🤣

My point too!! It's very odd, isn't it.

Although I suppose it could be a cause for celebration for the UK.
