Should The King’s visit to America be postponed?

The visit is due sometime next month. America, at Trump’s instigation, is involved in a war seen by much of the world, as illegal. Mt Trump has been extremely rude and provocative to European leaders, especially to Keir Starmer.
If the visit goes ahead, I fear Mr T is so narcissistic, he’d see it as our Monarchy supporting him.
It’s been suggested the King could say his doctors advised against the visit. The decision though, should rest with the government, rather than expose the King to the possibility of being political
What to do?

I think he shouldn't go. He won't be staying long and in any case it would probably be too strenuous. And Prince William can have a longstanding previous engagement....

The palace is usually very good at diplomacy so will hopefully handle this well.

Magenta8 Wed 18-Mar-26 10:08:38

No. King Charles, Prince William nor any other royal should go.

Anything that fuels Trump's childish ego is a very bad idea as he has proved himself to be to be totally unhinged. He has insulted the UK, as well as the rest of Europe, several times in his incoherent, ranting speeches.

Yes, it’s a matter between the King and the government to sort out which course of action is for the best.

My own feeling is that the King’s visit there will pour oil on troubled waters.

Yes, but for how long? In some circumstances trump has a selective goldfish memory. It is probable that any positives from the Royal visit will disappear very quickly.

Revoking the visit would certainly be seen as a snub.Things are bad between Starmer and Trump at the moment so the planned visit next month should mollify DT.

Allira Wed 18-Mar-26 10:18:14

He'd be visiting a country at war, albeit nowhere near their shores (as usual).
Most sensible people are concerned about travelling at the moment.

It is not a good idea for the King to visit the USA for all kinds of reasons but that is another one which could be used.
Charles could also become a target with Trump supporters who may believe we should be entering the war too.

No on so many levels.

Good job it’s not Gransnetters decision isn’t it?🤔

Another good reason not to go.

You are, absolutely right Oreo.

We are only expressing our views on the subject without any detailed knowledge of how the decision should be made. I still have the feeling that it would be a good idea not to go. It would be a good idea if the reasons were to be couched as diplomatically as possible in order to humour Trump. But, that is only my humble opinion and only based on what I know from the media.

Allira Wed 18-Mar-26 10:40:22

However, should he go, I'm sure King Chares is more than capable of correcting Trump on his opinion of the UK and our Armed Forces in the most diplomatic way possible.

Is Trump going to insult Charles in the same way he has insulted others? I think not, he's too much of a sycophant.

Oreo Wed 18-Mar-26 10:43:23

No I don’t think he would be anything but pleasant to Charles,
And all royalty are adept at being diplomatic.
Shows that being King isn’t all roses and sunshine doesn’t it?

Allira Wed 18-Mar-26 10:55:01

No I don’t think he would be anything but pleasant to Charles
Of course, as I said, he's a sycophant.

I could use a term I heard once but not in polite society like Gransnet!

I’m conflicted - not unusual I know. The
King is a seasoned diplomat and I’m confident he’d manage to build bridges whilst avoiding making comments Trump could distort to fit his own agenda

I expect the King and Keir Starmer will discuss this and reach a least worse compromise.

My heart and distrust of Trump and his illegal war says keep the Monarchy away from him. My head recognises Trump is the Potus and it’s the position, not the man that was being honoured by the visit. Then I remember this Potus started an illegal war, seems increasingly unstable and unfit to hold the office.
On a key issue, when will the law makers and the Generals say enough

I do admire King Charles and Queen Camilla. If I had to do and put up with half the visiting and travelling as they do at that age, I would not manage it, especially with an ongoing illness. I suppose if they do go they will have a private chuckle at the man child's behaviour in a very wry, dry English way. Trump is a sucker for English pomp.

merlotgran Wed 18-Mar-26 10:58:00

It’s a big ask of an ageing king who is still having treatment for cancer.
Charles’s sense of duty will be at the forefront of his decision and his visit would very likely smooth things over but I really hope it is cancelled for whatever reason the palace comes up with.

Allira Wed 18-Mar-26 11:02:33

Will the Queen go too? If so, I hope she manages to keep a straight face if Trump starts burbling.
Micheál Martin was struggling to do so.

Iam64 Wed 18-Mar-26 11:06:26

Allira - i rather hope Camilla wil revert to her Jilly Cooper type image and tell Trump what he is 😏

He’d no doubt see it as a supreme compliment with his best beatific smile and then it would become the meme of the moment. 😂

Aveline Wed 18-Mar-26 12:03:54

I dint think the King should go. How about sending ex Prince Andrew? He probably knows Trump via their mutual friend...

Cossy Wed 18-Mar-26 12:07:50

Sadly, I think it needs to go ahead, it’s planned, but I’d consider future trips either there or Trump very carefully.

Anniebach Wed 18-Mar-26 12:23:20

I hope the king would never use cancer as an excuse to avoid visiting America
