The Sauvignon Blanc Bottle Mystery

(39 Posts)

I wasn't sure which forum to put this under, but it was on the BBC News so here it is.

Residents of Hotham and North Cave, in East Yorkshire, say bags full of empty wine bottles have been turning up on grass verges for months.
The bottles are mostly empty Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc bottles and have been dumped on verges and on a nearby hill.

Villa Maria is not one of the cheapest plonks at around £10.75 a bottle so who is the culprit dumping dozens of empty bottles and why there?

I admit Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc is our favourite tipple but, honestly, it's not us - we don't live near there and we only buy it when it's on offer!

One of my favourites too.
I buy it when Sainsbury’s have 25 % off six bottles but not guilty of dumping my empties m’lud.
It is rather mysterious.

I saw the News report earlier.
Very strange.

I do love a good old local mystery but being at the other end of the country my Miss Marple skills (such as they are) won’t be of any use.

Meanwhile, please keep your eyes peeled for our missing capybara who has escaped from Marwell zoo and is enjoying fame if not fortune courtesy of local businesses and their memes.

Unfortunately it looks as though she’s heading in the wrong direction to be spotted quaffing a bottle of Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc!

Yes, it was on Look North and a mystery definitely of the Miss Marple type, a secret tippling vicar? or maybe more up Agatha Raisons street. (a handsome baddie)

It seems very odd.

Why not just put them in the recycling at home, or the big bins at supermarkets?

It sounded like the bottles were from a pub or restaurant, not just casual drinking at home, judging by the quantities of empty (not cheap) bottles of wine.

This might be a local (functional) alcoholic - one who had a stash in the garden (say) and has decided they need to get rid of them bit by bit?
Probably not someone who has "come out" about it or they would probably be all in the blue bin?

merlotgran Sat 28-Mar-26 08:17:50

Maybe Fergie doesn’t want to risk being spotted at the bottle bank.

We have friends in both villages, I’m going to ask them what their theories are.

One of the areas they have been dumped is quite remote.

Isn’t it a shame it’s not like the old days and you could take your empties somewhere and get a few pence in return.

NotSpaghetti Sat 28-Mar-26 08:34:55

I don't remember ever getting a deposit back on wine bottles in the UK.
I have returned wine bottles in Italy though - but only as part of buying full ones (directly from a vinyard/cantina).

JaneJudge Sat 28-Mar-26 08:36:32

You used to get them back on beer bottles as i remember taking my dads back to the outdoor

JaneJudge Sat 28-Mar-26 08:37:07

they were newcastle brown ale iirc

Sparklefizz Sat 28-Mar-26 08:38:50

My theory is it's an alcoholic who is now moving house and has to get rid of his/her stash of empty bottles.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 28-Mar-26 08:43:44

Not guilty, firstly I am not a fan of Villa Maria Sauvignon and secondly I live in the South East 😹😹😹

I am a fan of Agatha Raisin’s style, especially her shoes and handbags, I expect she could solve this…

JaneJudge Sat 28-Mar-26 08:44:00

Poor sod didn't want to draw attention to ones drinking habits and now is on the bbc news

They could still have taken them to a communal bottle bank.

I assume a vehicle has been used to transport them to the grass verges in the first place.

Why not go to a town a few miles away and use the facilities there?

I would agree if it were various wine bottles but one type only?
I think the culprit is Allira and she’s getting her denial in first😂
Hope the magistrate is kind to you Allira

I doubt an alcoholic would be too fussy about always drinking the same variety of SB.

My theory is it’s being decanted and sold as an even more expensive tipple.
Easily done in a swanky restaurant.

I'm not sure that functioning alcoholics would go for Villa Maria?

They're not getting rid of them bit by bit, there are bags and bags full bring dumped. One farmer found 48 bottles dumped in a bag just on one day.

Oreo Sat 28-Mar-26 10:46:11

I will await the answer, should it ever come, with baited breath.

Oreo Sat 28-Mar-26 10:46:49

It’s a very English sort of mystery isn’t it?😄
