There is hope and oil prices plunge it seems Trumps invasion attack plans are on hold if Iran opens Hormuz, we can hope.

America and Israel are committing acts of terrorism; it's a bit like 'the pot calling the kettle' isn't it.

You can't fight terrorism by being nice, I assume we all agree that terrorism is bad and it should stop.

Casdon Mon 13-Apr-26 13:20:18

Of course David49. The difference between us is stark though. Some think bombing out terrorism can work, some don’t believe that it does work.

We have terrorist threats in the UK, the security services monitor suspects and prevent them on a weekly basis.
Terrorist risks are much greater in the Middle East so the action to stop them is much stronger.

This war only achieves one thing. More terrorists.

I agree David that you ^can't fight terrorism by being nice^; you can't put out a fire with gasoline either.

Bombing on a large scale which kills large numbers of civilians and wipes out a country’s infrastructure is not the answer though, is it? Be honest, do you think that invading Iran has had any positive effect in the short term, and will it have once USA withdraw? I don’t.

David49 Mon 13-Apr-26 18:40:26

If the blockade is actually enforced there will be compromise Iran asking to total surrender and control of Hormuz is not acceptable.

Nobody should ever start a war without an endgame. Netanyahu's endgame in Lebanon is to occupy a large part of the country. It's a land grab under the cover of "security". Once part of Lebanon is occupied, it will be under constant threat from the rightful owners of the land (understandably), which Israel will use as an excuse to grab even more land, as it has in Gaza and the West Bank.

Exactly.
Attempting to cull terrorism by invading Iraq, well, that ended well, didnt it?
Will they never learn?

Oreo Mon 13-Apr-26 23:01:19

Iraq wasn’t about culling terrorism, indeed Saddam H did a pretty good job of keeping them down when they popped up.
It was about finding WOMD which they didn’t find, but SH pretended to have them and refused inspections, what a gigantic mistake on his part.

David49 Tue 14-Apr-26 09:08:17

One thing for sure appeasing terrorists doesnt work. Here at home the Southport killer was well known and was appeased repeatedly, because he was a child and was not thought to be a threat. From what we know now he should have been sectioned.

On a much larger scale in Gaza terrorists attacked a music festival, Hamas could have handed over those responsible and saved tens of thousands deaths. They didn't, they supported them and Israel bombed them to a standstill, Gaza is not a threat to Israel now, just absolute misery for the population.

It seems Iran is going the same way, the US is able to continue the blockade as long as it takes. It's going to hurt all of us but if it convinces Iran to compromise it's worth it, holding whole Gulf to ransome cant be condoned

AGAA4 Tue 14-Apr-26 09:38:23

This blockade is very risky. China need to use the Strait of Hormuz. Will the US fire on one of their ships if they attempt to cross?
It would be interesting to know what they would do in that case.

fancythat Tue 14-Apr-26 10:21:53

I have thought for a while that Starmer feels beholden to China[no, not going to write details].
Will be "interesting" in a horrid sort of way, to see if the US thinks the same.
I am guessing not?
But like everything Trump seems to do, he doesnt think things through.

Casdon Tue 14-Apr-26 10:36:31

If you don’t explain what you mean, nobody is going to take that insinuating comment seriously at all fancythat.

It is risky and Im sure China will have a say in what happens because they and their friends in Asia are very dependent on gulf oil.

They want the cheap oil but are not at all sympathetic to the Islamic cause, a peaceful end is in their interest most of all, maybe their influence will convince Iran to compromise, we can all hope

Maremia Tue 14-Apr-26 13:06:10

It is being reported that a ship, now under the flag of China, is sailing through the Strait as we post.

Maremia Tue 14-Apr-26 13:10:35

The ship is named 'Rich Starry' and allegedly was previously 'sanctioned' by the US.

AGAA4 Tue 14-Apr-26 13:35:57

Very interesting * Maremia* to see what will happen if anything.

AGAA4 Tue 14-Apr-26 14:07:44

Two ships have visited Iranian ports today and at least three others have crossed the Strait despite the blockade. China have called the blockade dangerous and irresponsible. BBC news.

sazz1 Tue 14-Apr-26 14:47:20

I think that US blocking the strait is a very clever idea. It will stop Iran from selling oil and slowly bankrupt the country. Also stop them charging £ 1.5million to oil tankers.
I don't agree with Trump starting the war in the first place but whoever thought of USA blocking the strait themselves was a genius imo.

fancythat Tue 14-Apr-26 15:04:13

Who will they actually fire at?

Chocolatelovinggran Tue 14-Apr-26 15:14:01

sazz, I feel that bringing China into this
" skirmish/ war/ special operations" is a bad idea

Trump has declared the Strait of Hormuz 'permanently open' after secret talks with Xi Jinping, claiming the Chinese leader had agreed to stop arming Iran.

This might be the start of a real resolution to the Iran question. It now needs pressure by China on Iran to stop the game of drone attacks on Oil /Gas Tankers in the Straits.

If that can be achieved we are on course for a real solution to this problem.
At last we can see a solution if the crazy Mullahs in Tehran want peace.

It is not over yet, but pressure from President Trump is making progress. Europe and Starmer don't want this to happen, because they are forming a Coalition directed at the USA and Nato itself. They want more time to throw dirt at the President. They want him humiliated.

Do they know what they are doing? They will be tested over the next few weeks.
