Political commentator, Sam Freedman, is reporting on Bluesky that Orban's opponent, Tisza has won the election in Hungary, seemingly with a supermajority.

Good news I think...

Well let’s hope that as a centre right party, it leans more towards Europe than Russia.

I wonder if Vance trumpeting Trump's support did more harm than good grin

Viktor Orbán effectively wrote a playbook for modern right-wing populism - one that leaders like Donald Trump and Nigel Farage have followed. But empowering extremism is a risky strategy, and it doesn’t ensure long-term control.

Thank goodness. Let’s hope the tide is turning with regard to far right populism.

Orban had just been in power too long, 16 years.Like the Conservatives found last year, people just want a change. Since he was a friend of Putin it’s better for Europe that he’s gone.

First bit of good news in ages!

LizzieDrip Sun 12-Apr-26 20:57:51

Well done the good people of Hungary👏

Laughably Magyar is described as centre right.
He will do exactly what he is told by the EU.

I’m truly amazed at the joyful reaction on here to Orban’s defeat. It’s as though people are blind to how Europe and the UK’s infrastructure, society and culture has been all but destroyed by uncontrolled immigration. It’s a funny old world that’s for sure….

StoneofDestiny Sun 12-Apr-26 21:48:33

Fantastic - maybe the world is waking up to the Trump/Putin grip on the world stage

I'm at a loss to understand why the description as "centre right" is laughable. Why is being centre right incompatible with being told what to do by the EU?

In which specific ways have the UK's infrastructure, society and culture been destroyed by immigration (which isn't, by the way, uncontrolled)?

I'm suffering a genuine "need to go to Specsavers" moment, so perhaps you could enlighten me and anybody else who was wondering.

Time will tell Casdon as it often does.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, albeit salutary.

Maybe the Hungarians are sick and tired of Oban blocking help going to Ukraine from the eu.
Plus the rampant in your face corruption.
Plus shortage of no end of goods thanks to his bum buddy, Trump.
That’s just for starters.

It will, I agree. The next big test will be the Scottish and Welsh elections, as far as the UK is concerned, then the US midterms.

Thousands of people out in Budapest tonight celebrating. It’s so good to see!

Wyllow3 Sun 12-Apr-26 22:20:30

Great!!!

How can anyone here complain about this victory, when at last,

at long last

They will back The Ukraine against Putin !!!

Good for us because we can move towards a more United Europe and NATO can look forward to better standing together.

Wyllow3 Sun 12-Apr-26 22:25:29

Messages during in from across the EU ...👏👏

Trump's influence wanes further.
