America, three headlines today, help me please to understand!

So, this morning, as is my usual routine, I checked out my online news feed, the first three headlines:-

Rueters

“Pentagon considers suspending Spain from NATO and to review UK’s claims to the Falklands”

The Guardian

“Trump threatens big tariff on UK tech tax

The Telegragh

USA blocks Met Police investigating Mandelson.

My point is I really feel disgruntled, 1) USA dominating my news feed again! 2) Someone please reel Trump and his buddies in, for the sake of the rest of humanity and the world!

AIBU?

1690 - when Britain first claimed these islands

1766 - British settlement established

1833 - modern uninterrupted British administration to date

USA are not in charge of NATO

Any company operating in U.K. should pay tax in U.K.

USA has no mandate to decide who the Met investigates

Who on earth does POTUS think he is 😡😡😡😡

This is really going to far…

Perhaps in his declining mental state, he thinks he is King of the World, and his enablers are allowing him to reign.

My thoughts exactly, it just made me sooooo angry that he thinks he has this authority and rights! For pity’s sake USA get a grip and impeach him!

But why are they?? Is the whole of America really that scared of him?? The man is a monster!

It’s just posturing and diversion tactics. The Iran war is going badly, so any random diversions that will cause international ripples and give Americans alternative talking points are being thrown out there.

But it’s so divisive and such stupidity of him and tbh I simply don’t understand American citizens tolerating this! Frankly he is an embarrassment to humanity and shouldn’t be allowed to run himself a bath let alone a very powerful nation! Please, someone, somewhere do something!

Casdon Fri 24-Apr-26 09:51:15

I agree. I was just explaining why I think the rubbish is coming from his mouth.

“Will no one rid me of this troublesome President”
Apologies to WS.

I believe this quote is attributed to Henry 11, “Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest” I believe is the quote.

Jean Anouilh wrote - 'Becket ou L'honeur de Dieu' (Becket or the honour of God)

Though HenryII said it first, I believe.smile

I agree and Prince Harry is not helping by ‘secretly’ arriving in Ukraine and suggesting the US should honour its obligations to Ukraine and NATO just a few days before his father’s visit to the US.
Trump is loving it!

In the words of Captain Mainwaring, ‘Stupid boy!’

Magenta8 Fri 24-Apr-26 10:31:47

Also in the news today (more Trump I'm afraid)

Trump says he speaks for the UK more than Prince Harry.
(Following PH's speech about the Ukraine.)

You couldn't make it up.

MaizieD Fri 24-Apr-26 10:38:26

You couldn't make it up.

Trump makes it up every time he opens his mouth.

I wonder why people bother to take him seriously. The effects of what he says are what need to be taken seriously...

Smileless2012 Fri 24-Apr-26 10:47:44

How can this be taken seriously? He can't do any of these things and continues to make himself and America a laughing stock.

I thought he said "turbulent priest".

Grandmabatty Fri 24-Apr-26 10:48:59

Trump really knows how to win friends, doesn't he? Presumably The Pentagon are being influenced by him.
I feel sorry for USA people who didn't vote for him but are stuck with him for now.

Maremia Fri 24-Apr-26 10:51:35

For as long as the House and the Senate have enough 'numbers', he will continue as President.

Greyduster Fri 24-Apr-26 10:58:59

I earnestly want to disbelieve that when they say “The Pentagon” that they mean the whole cohort of USA’s senior military has sanctioned a review of our sovereignty over the Falkland Islands. It is so monumentally ridiculous that there should be no dissenting voices, or are they all s**t scared of losing their jobs? We know two have gone already.
This madness has nothing to do with the USA being an ally of Argentina. It is to do with the Falklands oil and other natural resources that, having had his backside kicked over Greenland, he now has his greedy eyes on!

If the Falklanders didn’t want to be Argentinian, they assuredly wouldn’t to be another American territory either.

If this holds any water, I hope we can depend on the government not to be mealy mouthed about it. Our people died over there, for Gods sake!

Usedtobeblonde Fri 24-Apr-26 11:22:34

I hang my head in shame, Igot everything wrong 😢🙁

There seem to be several different versions of the adjective Henry II used as nobody seems to know for sure what he actually did say.

Whether it was, turbulent, troublesome or meddlesome is not clear but whatever it was, I wish somebody would rid us of DT.

AGAA4 Fri 24-Apr-26 11:37:25

Trump never engages brain (if he has one) before speaking.
This just makes him look ridiculous.
He doesn't have as much power as he thinks he has.
Surely the Iranians have taught him that. His two day war is still going on.

merlotgran Fri 24-Apr-26 11:45:27

Plenty did though and they think he walks on water.
They would vote for him again and again if they could.🤔

Sarnia Fri 24-Apr-26 11:45:50

The common denominator here is Trump. He is furious that NATO has not supported him and he is especially irate at the UK. Therefore he will be looking at ways to make problems for those who left him to his illegal war.
Despite his ridiculous statements that the US have the upper hand, Trump is backed into a corner and looking at a protracted conflict, which wasn't his intention but I don't think he can see a way out and save face.
This should be a lesson to US voters not to elect the elderly as POTUS.
