Revolving door politics

Today it seems Starmer could resign as PM, but what does this say about our national politics in the past decade, when PMs on both sides of the political divide have come and gone with tedious regularity?
Have we grown out of one party politics?
Is it it time to embrace coalition politics?
Is social media/populous views responsible for revolving doors politics??
I wanted Starmer to go but am now considering this more deeply and think it could be more harmful than good. Surely our PMs cannot be subject to a lynching mob whenever the going gets tough. If a party wins an election shouldn’t that mean they see out a full term?

The journalists outside number ten were like a bunch of hyenas heckling anyone who went into the building.
Reporting has become a circus.

Twas ever thus when there is such huge interest in situations where PMs are facing pressure for survival....

Which family is that? His new one or the one he walked out on? As for being a buffoon, it wasn’t a good look seeing him at international functions with his shirt hanging out. Fiddling about with umbrellas and rambling on about Peppa Pig when giving talks…he was a total embarrassment on the world stage.

Why not look forward instead of backwards? Boris has long gone.

You should be worried about who could replace Starmer. Imagine the horrendous Angela Rayner. Can you see her on the world stage! At least Boris was welcomed by other countries and was well educated and very intelligent.

Why do you keep trying to tell other people what they should be doing Primrose53?

Oreo, the media attack stuff is not nonsense. It started from the moment Starmer became P.M.. There has been constant negative reporting , all reflected on this site .

Absolutely, the media has been relentless with the Daily Mail just hounding Starmer from day one.
This is how Trump got in as the news ( Fox News in particular) had the same agenda with the attacks on Biden.
This is how money is made by these news organizations.
So if the UK doesn’t watch out you could end up with a leader that is beholden to the billionares of the world .
Trump barely even hides it anymore.

I just saw a clip of Anne Widdecombe saying that in the past there were just two main parties but now there is a serious contender in Reform and people are voting for them because they are fed up with both Labour and Conservatives and want change. She is a wise old owl and yes, I do know she is in Reform.

She’s an awful woman who believes Gay people should all undergo “correction therapy” or whatever it’s called?

Why people think a change of leadership will miraculously mean a booming economy beats me. Yes Starmer is a disappointing stuffed shirt who lacks charisma, but what this country needs is a bit of stability, not yet another leadership contest leading to yet another disappointment, stirred up by the media. Im just grateful he didn’t have his nose up Trumps backside , unlike some of his opponents, and drag is into a ridiculous war.

👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Agreed Fallingstar.

I’ve complained to Ofcom about Sam Coates’ comments at 5.20pm outside No 10.

He referred to some photographs of the PM as ‘government propaganda’ and said ‘you’re looking at fake news pictures’.

The photographs were actually Associated Press pictures (rather than No 10 pictures) which Coates later acknowledged … but he still didn’t apologise for essentially slandering the UK government.

Coates, we know you hate KS, but you’re allegedly a ‘political journalist’ … at least try and pretend to show a bit of balance.

The Sky News political reporters appear to have deteriorated into sad pastiches of themselves.

I can’t agree, if it were just aspects of the media and Starmer had been a really good PM their grumblings in print wouldn’t have cut the mustard.

Ilovecheese

I can't blame Jess Philips for resigning after he rather insulted her by appointing Harman.
If you read her resignation letter it gives an example of his reluctance to take any firm and speedy steps to improve safety for young people.

I read her resignation letter in full. She was obviously stymied at every turn by a dithering PM.

Oreo Tue 12-May-26 21:09:10

87 telling him to go and 110 backing him, the rest keeping their powder dry for now.
I suspect that most want to keep him in place until they can shoehorn Burnham into Parliament 😉

Oreo Tue 12-May-26 21:09:33

It can only be a matter of time.

I agree absolutely. I hate to think of who will replace Starmer as there's just no-one I recognise as PM material. I'm terrified to think of that idiot Lammy or the drunken Rayner being considered. How has it come to this?

Why not Lammy?
He doesn’t know that trans men are actually women, as evidenced by his referral to TM in his declaration that men can have babies.
At least we’d already know he was not the sharpest tool in the box Before he was elected.

David49 Wed 13-May-26 00:04:52

The one namer being talked up is Streeting. Im not sure is he going to be a strong leader, or is he going to be the least worse option.

eazybee Wed 13-May-26 07:02:19

Reporting has become a circus.
It was ever thus, simply more available.

People on Gransnet were happy enough to gloat over Boris Johnson's misdemeanours, including recordings of private conversations.
Now the position is reversed, suddenly it is wrong.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 13-May-26 07:18:05

Unfortunately the PM is basically a dead man walking

I heard a saying yesterday which I think pretty much sums up the PM

when you throws others under the bus, don’t be surprised when the bus comes for you

With all due respect eazybee I wasn’t talking about Gransnet or other forums but political reporters of some repute working for the BBC etc.
What is said by ordinary people is not broadcast to the whole nation.

Same could be said for all those MPs doing the Go message.
They shouldn’t be surprised when that comes back to bite them.

ronib Wed 13-May-26 08:11:56

We can’t foresee what the electorate will think in 2029. But don’t the markets take over? Isn’t it the Bank of England who will decide whether Starmer stays or goes?

You obviously missed the media machine maligning previous PM’s and their ministers…

Fallingstar Wed 13-May-26 09:05:01

I didn’t miss it GrannyGravy, am not a fan of this lynching by the media on past occasions either.
