Shooting at a Mosque in San Diego

I was very saddened to read this morning of two Californian teenagers storm a mosque and shoot dead three adult males and injure one other, then leave and and shoot themselves.

They were 17 & 18 and one had “borrowed” his mother’s guns.

The mosque also incorporated a school where pupils as young of 9 were learning.

California is a Democrat held state and has a long history of all ethnicities living peacefully as neighbours.

What is our world coming to?

Attacks on our fellow humans in their places of worship, attack on our Jewish communities in this country.

All I can say is thank goodness the UK doesn’t have the same ludicrous gun laws as the USA.

May those dead RIP.

I haven’t noticed anything said by POTUS Trump, though the Governor of California and his wife have spoken.

☹️☹️😢😢

Unfortunately, we’re too used to hearing about gun outrages in the US, school shootings particularly so.In a country awash with guns these occurrences are almost a daily thing. If you look up the homicide figures of death by shooting you’ll see how many there are.
It’s horrific.

I don’t need to look it up Oreo, I’m very well versed in what happens in the USA, I spent a year living in California many years ago, we have relatives still in California and friends across the USA.

This was not a “school shooting” the shooting occurred with the main mosque, a place of worship.

American gun culture is out of hand. Latest stats I could find show 130 people shot and killed daily.

Unfortunately the gun lobby holds too much sway on the elected representatives.

Oreo Tue 19-May-26 09:58:55

Yes, you have already said that.
A mosque this time, a synagogue next an there are lots of Christian church shootings too, as well as in schools and colleges.

Oreo Tue 19-May-26 09:59:40

And it will keep on happening as the gun laws stand in the US.

'His mother's guns', plural.
Shocking, in so many ways.

Oreo Tue 19-May-26 10:12:31

I can’t see that guns will ever be outlawed ( for everyday people) as it’s enshrined in their Constitution .Laws can be changed of course but there is little will to make that happen there.
The US isn’t alone in the world of guns for all mind you.

" His mother's guns.." merciful heaven..
It seems particularly sad to hear of this in. California, where, as others have stated, there has been a better acceptance of differences than is common in other parts of the USA.
I agree with those who fear that today a mosque suggests that tomorrow a synagogue or temple, or church, might be a target.
When will the USA be brave enough to challenge the gun lobby?

That’s a personal attack Cossy I have said in my first post on here that it’s horrific.

Wyllow3 Tue 19-May-26 10:20:56

I'm with you all the way Cossy, all the way

I was going to start a thread too but it was very late last night

Any attempts to lessen or explain it away as "part of a culture" just don't hack it.

As it was clearly targeted and very specific and children could have been murdered becuase of their being Muslim specifically

Apologies if you feel that way, you came across as very dismissive, I’m sorry but that’s how I felt.

Fartooold Tue 19-May-26 10:23:06

Why oh why do we need guns! Guns are for killing! America should ban them.

Cossy Tue 19-May-26 10:23:12

Oh and I see you reported me, thanks Oreo I won’t bother responding to any more of your responses.

TerriBull Tue 19-May-26 10:37:20

Wherever it takes place and whoever the victims maybe, the outcome is always terrible and needlessly tragic. Thank God we don't have guns here.

LizzieDrip Tue 19-May-26 10:42:39

The authorities in San Diego are referring to the shooting as an Islamophobic hate crime.

So sad.

It is terribly sad, as is any hate attack such as this on any particular cohort or group of people.

It’s horrific and unacceptable and how ever many times it happens in any country it will make me feel extremely sad.

Don’t hold your breath for Trump and his ilk to say something. They bomb schools of little girls and practically brag about it. They do not care for the lives of black/brown or Muslim people and they are literally legislating their hatred in that country.

These evil young men had access to guns because the people who support Trump want easy access to guns for the very same sickos who carry out the vast majority of these mass shootings. They highlight those that are not politically aligned with them and lie about the ones that are. Guns are like religion itself in the US. The subscribers to gun culture and Trumpers will no doubt use this incident, as they have many others, to justify the need for guns.

I fear for my grandchildren in the US. Mass shootings/domestic terrorism is such a regular occurrence that they literally happen in the hundreds annually. Think about that. Think about how insane that is. God bless those poor people victimized by such a hateful violent culture.

I just don’t see how Trump can use this incident to justify guns, it’s not as if police with guns stopped or halted this event, it appears, according to the reports, the two responsible returned to their car and then shot themselves?

I have recently been reading Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens, which he wrote in the 1840s. He felt quite strongly about American culture at the time and "satirised" it. However, many aspects are very recognisable in real life even today. I was especially surprised to learn that at that time, almost 200 years ago, it was quite acceptable for city folk to carry concealed weapons - revolvers and swordsticks.
