Feelings?

Could Mr Burnham restore Labour?

MayBee70 Mon 22-Jun-26 10:22:39

What a sick disrespectful heading for one of the most decent honourable politicians you'll ever find. Shame on you...

paddyann54 Mon 22-Jun-26 10:22:58

Musical chairs at Westminster….for heavens sake didn,t we have enough that with the tories .Why can’t people make a choice and stick with it for ONE whole parliamentary term.
I,m not a Labour supporter but this nonsense of people bullied out of their posts is ridiculous..
How many more before the system is totally destroyed?
Thought it was just young folk who couldn,t stick with anything for more than five minutes!
Sadly Burnham is still a supporter of Netanyahu and the arms will still flow to kill Palestinian children
Shame on them all !

I utterly agree. Totally nasty and unnecessary.

Naturally, lots of people are “pleased”, many are not!

But he was a toolmaker’s son, wasn’t he ? Why so disparaging about toolmakers ? I don’t see that as an insult but tradies are very much respected in my country.

Why was Ode to Joy being sung at the start of Starmer’s resignation speech?

As I said upthread:

So annoying to have Steve Bray blasting out (EU unofficial anthem) Ode to Joy

At least it wasn't Benny Hill though.

I’m sure he won’t be missed. His own people and party turned on him so what did he expect.

I felt a tad sympathetic when he nearly started blubbing then I thought “no, he’s brought this on himself” because he was so useless. He actually tried to make out the slight reduction in small boat crossings was down to him but we all know it was the bad weather that stopped them.

I’m sure that actually he will be missed.

Find your post just a little offensive.

Actually, just to be factual, 60,000 migrants deported, 500 boats stopped at source, 300 traffikers identified and arrested. All since July 2024. How does that compare with 3 volunteers being paid to go to Rwanda?

There is absolutely nothing offensive about your post whatsoever in any way. You are quite correct, I have always thought Starmer should have been more innovative but he is a rule taker when he should have been a rule maker.

He will not be missed any more than any other PM. Politics is about next weeks news, not last weeks.

It's not disparaging about toolmakers, but it doesn't define Starmer, who has some very admirable qualities.

Such a spiteful and mean spirited OP. At least KS has shown some dignity this morning. Too much to hope that the poster asks for the title to be edited…..

Sago Please can you request that your title be altered TBH, It is really goady, and it spoiling. We've surely had enough on "goadiness" recently to last a lifetime.

It was important to bring it up - but a reconsideration of the title -

how about

"He has done it! Starmer resigned!

has the punch necessary to get us going?

ronib Mon 22-Jun-26 10:31:02

NotSpaghetti okay I rephrase the question … why was Stephen Bray allowed to disrupt a very solemn moment when Starmer spoke?

A toolmaker's son

So what?
Totally unnecessary and disparaging.

Not just that, but what the O/P does not seem to recognise, it is disparaging to a whole class or group of people who make up our society. Such snobbery*.

Oh come on! How many times did KS trot out the line about his father being a toolmaker. He said it at every occasion until it became a standing joke.

Sago Mon 22-Jun-26 10:31:46

Nothing wrong with being a toolmaker.

Just how often he told us.

Keir Starmer has publicly referenced his father’s profession as a toolmaker at least 44 times since becoming the leader of the Labour Party, with a dedicated website set up specifically to track every instance of the phrase.

Oh for goodness sake Nanna, it’s irrelevant, like him or loathe him, he’s our country’s PM!

Democratically elected to lead his party, democratically elected to lead our country.

His father, and indeed his mother, Aunty, cousin or wife’s professions are utterly irrelevant and it was meant as a disrespectful slur, aimed directly at KS because he talked about both his parents professions and his pretty normal upbringing.

As I’m pretty sure you know!

I don't believe Andy Burnham,if he gets the position, will be any better. The people of Makerfield voted to get rid of Kier Starmer,it was already a Labour seat. I'm not a supporter of Starmer but he's a human being with feelings,he had to jump before he was pushed.

Yes, it had a Labour MP (and has had one for ages), but the recent local elections returned Reform councillors. It also voted for Brexit with a huge majority and most areas which voted for Brexit have been ripe for Reform. I suspect Reform would have won, if the Labour candidate had been anybody else.

Do some research about fixed epithets used as insults.

I will miss him! There you go!

But I absolutely agree, politics is very fickle and many won’t missed him or all the others PM before him, some liked, some loathed.

It’s the element of sheer spite towards another human being which I so vehemently object to, however, as time goes by it’s just what I’ve come to expect in our world of dog eat dog, “goadyness” and utter rudeness.

It won’t stop me, and others, calling it out.

Casdon Mon 22-Jun-26 10:38:06

My thought is that it’s better to be a tool maker’s son than a tool. With the honourable exception of Sunak, that is what Starmer followed. We are now two competent PMs down, all due to tools of the media, and the other tools who are sucked in by the media.

Wyllow3 Mon 22-Jun-26 10:38:45

As for Starmer resigning, it is a big shock, but I do actually think he has done it quickly to maintain stability in what was inevitable - not making it a nasty long drawn out battle for the press to feast on for months - now that would not have been good?.

Part of him may be glad to step back - (goodness knows, I would) and a deal may have been done behind the scenes as to his future.

My feelings all along is that it is not a bad thing to have someone as a poster describes above "outside of the Westminster circle"

dont mistake me, I respect him greatly, but have respected him best on the international front and people see mainly the home front.

Starmer, as I recall from a post else thread yesterday (there was a long list of Labour achievements) has done a pretty good job but can't project it well.

He didn't really have any other option, did he? I just feel very sad that British politics has become so vile and divisive. No wonder we struggle to get decent people to stand for parliament but just like we get the police we deserve, we also get the politicians we deserve!

I agree, foxie, and am very sad about it.

Well , wouldn't hold your breath!

Some simply don’t care about others finer feelings, so long as they make their point and amuse other like-minded people.

It’s indicative of our “I’m alright Jack” and “NIMBY” world.

Sad and a tad pathetic, but it takes all sorts, we don’t need to agree or tolerate it.

Wyllow3 Mon 22-Jun-26 10:43:08

Primrose you are missing the fact that the title is actually mocking or disparaging a whole group of our population, small people who make good on their artisan skills.
It wasnt necessary, it was goady. We've been asked X times not to be goady, look where it led us!

Wyllow3 Mon 22-Jun-26 10:44:30

Yes Cossy why mock what was a dignified decision that only the brave in politics can make.

Elegran Mon 22-Jun-26 10:47:40

I hope Andy Burham has a magic wand ready to wave and instantly sort out all the global and internal problems which beset the country. Keir Starmer said very clearly at the start of his premiership that it would take time to do, but the voters didn't have the patience to let him finish his plans. Will they let Burnham stay in place long enough to do what he proposes, or will they shoot that workman too because he isn't superman?

26bow Mon 22-Jun-26 10:49:41
