He has triggered a by-election for Clacton but is saying he will stand again in the election , letting the people of Clacton decide!!
Our of curiosity is anyone from the area on here , did you vote for him last time , will you vote for him again? I don't think what he done is right it was not but, one wonders where British Politics is going it seems the media is increasingly being judge and jury, not sure what I think of this either.

fancythat

The thing is though, Burnham didn’t have an investigation and a second potential investigation hanging over him, so he isn’t accused of anything, except opportunism, yet.

Will Farage care?

As long as the 1st investigation has to be dropped.

It won’t be dropped though fancythat. It is only suspended for any period when he is not an MP, and it will be picked up where it left off immediately on his return. He can’t shake it off, unless he resigns and does not stand again.

But there is a one year rule?

So if he becomes an MP again, when he resumes, the investigation can only go back one year from that point?

fancythat Tue 07-Jul-26 19:36:44

The £5 million would then fall outside of that new one year.

Casdon Tue 07-Jul-26 19:41:10

No, the investigation will still go ahead, explained here.

Reform won’t be allowed to pay for the by election as it would look like they are trying to buy democracy. Us mugs the taxpayers will be footing the bill. Never mind, Nigel will have super security as he can afford to pay for that.

Graphite Tue 07-Jul-26 19:45:59

No, no no. He was elected as an MP on 5 July 2024. If he is re-elected that investigation will continue looking at payments received in the preceding 12 months e.g the bung from Harborne and the payments made by Cottrell.

If he is re-elected he will have to declare anything received in the 12 months preceding that second date. That will encompass some payments and benefits already declared, some not declared since his last return e.g. last weekend's jaunt to Washington, whoever paid for that, and anything between the date of his resignation and re-election.

I can’t find my earlier post now, but that’s v good if Farage can’t wriggle out of the investigation.

It seems to me that democracy is just a toy for this kind of person to play with. 😠

The day after this election I want to wake up to the headline:

MR FARAGE - YOU'VE BEEN BINNED.

The preceding 12 months from which date?

Casdon Tue 07-Jul-26 20:17:42

From the date he was first elected as an MP.

SKY News has admitted to staking out the house Nigel Farage’s daughter lives in.

SKY News has admitted to staking out the house Nigel Farage’s daughter lives in.

Not a good look, BUT it’s not due to the Times (allegedly) publishing a photo, Farage had (allegedly) used the house in previous press releases

If none of the other serious parties stand a candidate it will surely considerably diminish the amount of publicity Farage could get from this stunt. No media speculation about candidate’s chances, no need to send reporters to see how campaigns are faring, No need for vox pops, no need for any publicity at all really. Farage won’t like that at all.

And there’s always the chance that Count Binface could enjoy a huge protest vote 😆

It’s eminently sensible that the other parties don’t want to waste money and resources on Farage’s completely pointless gesture…

Hardly staking out: The Sky News statement says:

Clarification: Sky News was not at the property at 7.41am. As has already been acknowledged, and as shown in the footage from 10.19am, Sky News was outside a property where Mr Farage was registered to vote at the last election. Sky News did not interact with Mr Farage’s daughter.

On a single occasion, we approached the property without a camera operator, identified ourselves as Sky News, and the adult occupant chose not to engage. We were seeking to contact Mr Farage to ask questions about the gift he accepted from Mr Cottrell. This is a well-established and routine journalistic practice when reporting on matters of legitimate public interest.

The footage clearly demonstrates that Sky News did not “hound” or pursue Mr Farage’s daughter. At no stage did we seek to speak to anyone other than Mr Farage in connection with this story.

The footage from security cameras shows someone walking towards the house at 10:19 and walking away again at 10:20.

SKY News has admitted to staking out the house Nigel Farage’s daughter lives in.

Has it?

The statement I saw on social media seemed to say that they’d gone to the house, as any TV company might have done when looking for the chance of a story, and had been turned away. Nothing about a stakeout.

This is how it was reported earlier. Has the story changed since then?

In response to these claims from Farage that Sky News had been "harassing" his daughter, the organisation has since disclosed details around the alleged incident.

They said that reporters approached a property linked to Farage off camera and knocked on the door as part of a broadcast pool operation.

The person who answered was an adult who, they later established, was not Farage's daughter

The journalists identified themselves, but the occupant chose not to engage

The Looneys beat the SDP (votes wise) in a by election, contributing to their downfall…
