Trump is eyeing up Mali as his next war zone

According to the Washington Post, Trump is considering an attack on the Islamist terrorist groups based in Mali.

"The Alliance of Sahel States consists of Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger — all West African nations where military leaders have in recent years ousted democratically elected governments in coups, largely cut ties with the West and turned to Russia for security help.

But the administration official pinned the blame not on those governments but on their Russian partners, saying that Moscow “has proven to be an ineffective security partner for Mali.”

“We hope that other African nations take note of Russia’s terrible performance in combating terrorism,” the official said."

This is an interesting and surprising turn of events, has Trump's admiration for Putin dimmed? Could it be because Ukraine has been more successful of late and Trump does like a winner? Or is it a deflection from Trump's problems in the Middle East?

Goodness, as if the USA needs another fight..

MollyNew Wed 22-Jul-26 20:01:02

What is this? Trump fighting for democracy in other countries while he's busy trying to dismantle it in the USA.

Maremia Wed 22-Jul-26 21:46:59

Must be getting bored again.

Practical point.
Are there any USA bases in Africa?
If not, how would intervention be achieved?

foxie48 Thu 23-Jul-26 09:47:52

There's a big base in Djibouti but also bases in Saudi Arabia and Jordan which are close to the African continent.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 23-Jul-26 10:33:39

UK has training bases in Africa, which other countries use. Let’s hope that Andy Burnham says no.

I'm thinking your last paragraph foxie in your first post is spot on.

I still havent seen anything on our media about this, though I am not paying attention and just got so engrosssed in my task I missed a virtual appointment!

I did notice that Musk is having a No Good Very Bad Day Year.

This is opinion piece from a tabloid piece. But it is true that Tesla is in trouble now his SpaceX stock is tanking. He admits, though, that he got carried away in the trump administration.

He is being investigated for voter fraud in Pennsylvania too.

I hope I see the day where he is stripped of his citizenship and sent back to South Africa. Or any other country that will take a person who said he dropped out of school and worked without the proper Visa before becoming a citizen. Fair is fair, right? He should get the same treatment that the others being deported get for breaking the rules. Detention center in the swamp of Florida or Gitmo, then he can disappear to a various country he has never been to with nothing but the clothes on his back.

Sorry dude, you dont get to run the lives of millions of people worldwide with a smile on your face and a Nazi salute and think we are all going to forgive and forget.

Just a reminder, most of the agencies he gutted in the Federal Government with DOGE were investigating his various companies for a lot of bad things.

ruin the lives...

what I wouldnt give for an edit function.

imaround Thu 23-Jul-26 22:21:26

More about those investigations if you want some reading material.

Well, exactly.
"look at the squirrel"

do people inside the USA "buy" it. Classic name an "outside threat" to turn away attention

Yet he is entering lose lose situations - (see thread on Iran threats to UK) as well as this one.

Wyllow3 Thu 23-Jul-26 22:23:09

Thank you imaround.

MT62 Thu 23-Jul-26 23:21:58

I liked him at first as I thought he was all for peace. Obviously I got that wrong.

Crumbly159 Fri 24-Jul-26 01:27:03

Lord above.

"Who will rid us of this turbulent President?"

It's just astonishing that no-one in the US seems to care about what he gets up to. They just go along with him.

He's a dictator through and through - and they love him for it!

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 24-Jul-26 07:09:16

Well, well, well, imaround, that's very interesting. Maybe that's the origin of Mr Musk's interest in British politics.
Sadly, as we have all seen, Mr Trump is a fickle friend, and has a great capacity for vengeance if he feels anything less than blind, unswerving, loyalty.
Mr Musk might be wise to consider a nice long holiday somewhere..

A different definition of democracy for Donald then. Donacracy ? I don’t know why he can’t keep to himself and stop interfering with other nations. It won’t end well. A shame because he could have been so good and he had a lot on his side to start with.

Magenta8 Fri 24-Jul-26 07:46:50

Now the footie world cup is over, yet more distraction from the Epstein files.

This is the man who has obtained two peace prizes, one from FIFA and one he filched from Maria Corina Machado.

Also he's bumping up the tariffs again. Just when you think he couldn't get any worse - he does.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 24-Jul-26 07:53:04

I agree, Magenta, all of this activity is rooted in distraction from opening the files on Epstein's friends. If you were suspicious, you might wonder why..

Trump is planning to help the Saudis get a nuclear weapon on condition that they pledge allegiance to Israel. They have not replied to his offer yet.

I thought it was a done deal?

Also the new tariffs are being enforced because of “forced labour concerns”

The U.K. is one such country apparently.

AGAA4 Fri 24-Jul-26 09:07:02

In the original agreement there was no mention of signing the Abraham Accords but now the Saudis have been made aware of this they have yet to agree.

Wyllow3 Fri 24-Jul-26 10:00:05

Saudis are no fools on the international stage.

They might well have the sense to see they say "yes" then they actually immediately be more vulnerable if they sign to it:

And that it is yet another Trump gambit

Maremia Fri 24-Jul-26 11:28:41

nanna, that is clever,
'Donacracy'

Maremia Fri 24-Jul-26 11:29:48

Great to see you back, imaround.

I am happy about that news.
