Has the Conservative Party peaked after so many years and what can Badenoch do to lead it away from its current decline?

There is a recent election result that tells a story of Conservative decline along with a series of decisions that confirm that, when it comes to both strategy and judgment, Badenoch is lacking.

Start with the Get Manchester Mayoral contest from a week ago. For many, the standout fact of the byelection to replace Andy Burnham as mayor of Greater Manchester was that Reform came a very poor second, taking just 21% of the vote to Labour’s 47%. A crushing defeat for Nigel Farage’s party, which a matter of weeks earlier had talked up its chances of winning the mayoralty.

But run your finger further down the vote tally until it finally reaches the Conservative candidate on a mere 7.7%. In all the previous mayoral contests in Greater Manchester, the Tories were in second place. This time they were fifth behind Restore Britain a party of the hard right. A Tory result that bad among such a large electorate of 3 million people suggests not merely that Badenoch is making slow progress, but that she is moving her party backwards.

Her strategic response to this competition on the right has been to move towards her rivals, hoping to blunt the appeal of the nationalist populist parties by matching their offer . The latest step came late on Thursday with, as the Telegraph billed it, a Tory “promise to end council housing for foreigners”. Badenoch’s pledge is to evict almost 230,000 non-EU foreign national households from their homes.

Never mind that many of those turfed out will include people who have been living, working and paying taxes in Britain for years. Once evicted, those families, including their children, will be rendered homeless, leaving local councils with the choice of either abandoning them to the streets or providing much costlier emergency accommodation. Consider the timing.

Badenoch decided the right moment to demand foreigners be kicked out of their homes was as the Norfolk town of Thetford entered its third night of violence and disorder, triggered by a mob surrounding the accommodation of suspected asylum seekers, some in the crowd trying to force their way in, as others threw rocks and chanted: “We want them out.” Into this tinderbox of a situation walked the Conservative party leader, clutching a petrol can.

Just a day or two earlier, she had been defending the selection as a Somerset council candidate of Joshua Bonehill-Paine, a man who has served long jail sentences for, among other things, a sustained campaign of antisemitic harassment and abuse of the Jewish former MP Luciana Berger, a campaign that saw Berger branded an “evil money-grabber”, her face superimposed on the body of a rat and photographs of her doctored into multiple, sexualised images. He has offered no apology to Berger. Badenoch herself conceded that Bonehill-Paine would not have cleared the threshold to become an MP but serving as a councillor was different, she explained, as he would be responsible for nothing more than “parking and bins” – thereby, and at a stroke, insulting the many thousands of Conservatives who devote themselves to public service in their local communities. She then appoints him to a national party advisor role.

Badenoch surely must realise she can’t outperform Reform- so what should she do instead to stop her party’s decline

Yes they left before they were expelled - it was the military Junta ( 1967-74) - torture, executions, loss of all civil liberties, , no elections, no free press ( obvs). But hey - human right are for wimps and the sky didn’t fall in

Well, it’ll be worth it if it stops the boats confused…

MayBee - that took me minute. Indeed

I doubt it will make much difference if she reminds voters that the Conservatives were going to send the illegal immigrants to Rwanda and hopefully would have been more particular on the illegal immigrants who are given reasons to remain.
Maybe I find the Labour attitude to illegal immigrants more difficult to accept considering the amount my son had to pay and for my dear daughter-in-law having to take three tests before she was able to become a resident of the uk.

Yes, looking at the dates it had crossed my mind that the Greek Junta had something to do with Greece leaving the ECHR but I was too idle to investigate.

Thanks for doing the work, Tt grin

Well I had the advantage of being politically active and aware when it was happening - along with Franco in Spain and the fascist dictatorship in Portugal. When these all came to an end, the choice of holiday destinations blossomed.

As an aside, Victoria Hislop's novel The Figurine is set during the period 1967-74, the time of the military Junta in Greece.

I remember it happening. This novel captures the atmosphere of that time well.

I have been a Conservative voter, often through very gritted teeth, all my life and will definitely vote for Kemi even though she's not doing a huge amount to appeal to leftist Tories such as myself.
The OP speaks of the Manchester by-election but completely ignores the fact that on the same day the Tories took Aberdeen South from the SNP, the first time the Tories have won a by-election in Scotland since the early 1970s.
I agree that there are trad conservative voters who are bigoted enough to dislike the idea of a black woman leading their party; to whom I would say that there are now two, no three (if you count Laurence Fox) parties they can join - and good bloody luck to them. The one upside of the rise of Recycle, Reuse and Reduce or whatever they call themselves, is that we can finally get rid of the racists. Hooray!

Manchester by election was highlighted amongst other issues, as the recent Mayoral by election as in the three Mayoral elections Conservatives came second place and this time either place behind Reform and Restore. Manchester is also such a large electorate of 3 million. Happy to outline all by-election results since last General Election though:

There have been 6 by elections since the 2024 General election counting Clacton- 5 if not.

Labour Andy Burham decisively won the Makerfield by election with an increased vote share of of 10%.

The Green Party won Gorton and Denton by election emphatically.

Reform UK won the Runcorn and Helsby by election from the Labour Party by 6 votes after a recount.

The SNP held Arbroath and Broughty Ferry in Scotland- a heartland of Scottish Nationalism.

Scotland had a clear win in the Aberdeen South by election from SNP. Aberdeen South is the wealthiest suburb in Scotland. It was Conservative for 70 years then interrupted with the rise of Scottish Nationalism. Then back to Conservative in 2017- then SNP. By election took place at height of SNP embezzlement details hitting the press and court case plus the decline of Scottish Labour also played a part.

There are plenty of countries that are virtual dictatorships today that you can visit as a tourist, but don't get involved in political activity or you will be on the plane back home very quickly.

I don’t understand why those people who want to leave the ECHR don’t seem to realise that it is protecting them, too. Or why they think that once that protection is removed they will not be vulnerable themselves. First they came for etc etc confused…

People who want to leave the ECHR on the whole do not know enough about history and just see it as a quick dirty fix to the asylum seeker issue. Which it isn’t

I have never liked the Tory Thatcherism - I'm OK because all you have to do is work harder and you will succeed.

But I do like Kemi and am sad that she is a Toy, because at heart she is quite socialist in her views. Her opinions that if you want to be British you have to change to fit in and leave your baggage behind is quite refreshing.
She does talk a lot of plain common sense, but sadly she is backed by a team, if you can call it that of backstabbers. She will never be allowed to stand as PM for the next election
