How wonderful you work hard and buy a nice house in a nice area and Andy Burnham PM wants to put foreign men we know nothing about who come from third world countries in the house next door to you and your family and the final straw is they don't have to pay a penny it's all free for them, no wonder they are rushing to board the Mega Boats bringing in 230 men a time here. Ain't life grand well it is for them, utopia.

I feel sorry for those migrants and refugees who have followed correct procedure, endured long waits and sometimes are refused. What must they be thinking when people just fetch up with no papers and no checks ? Think of them before rushing to house the queue jumpers. Also, what about the people who are desperately poor and sleep in shop doorways and would just grab at the chance of a roof over their heads and a bit of pocket money ? Priorities.

Aveline Wed 12-Aug-26 06:17:19

Fully agree nanna8. Those people who arrived in the approved manner are the nurses, doctors and care workers unlike the rabble who pack on the boats.

Tuliptree Wed 12-Aug-26 06:27:42

The problem is that for asylum seekers/refugees there is no approved manner now is there? That’s part of the debate isn’t it as to if there were, would it stop people coming on the boats ? I’d assume not

The only way for an asylum seeker to make an asylum application is to be physically present in the UK and present themselves to border control for processing. An asylum application cannot be made from any other country at all.

Thus people arriving in small boats and presenting themselves to border control as directed are correctly adhering to the only asylum application process the UK has in place

I do not know a lot about this latest asylum seeker situation.

I can see that moving 1,250 mostly young men into a small rural village population of under 400, with only a church and village hall is bound to cause worries and unrest within the community.

I have also had a lot of contact with our local hospitals and can see the diversity amongst the staff. Our NHS actively recruits staff from abroad and it is evident to anyone who has to use any branch of our health care service.

luluaugust Wed 12-Aug-26 07:21:32

It would be fascinating to know what the asylum seekers really think when they find themselves in a small village or town with few facilities. I guess most think they will be in London
Here in Kent we have some trying to smuggle themselves back to France. Once on our relatively small island you are trapped and I guess they never think of that.

Dickens Wed 12-Aug-26 07:25:08

I believe the issue is this - the largely male Asylum Seekers, whether housed near a leafy-village or run-down estate, are an unknown quantity.

In the same way that 'not-all-men' are sexual predators, many, if not most, women are wary - in certain situations and environments - of 'all-men', because they don't know whether the specific man is or isn't a danger to them. The principle is the same - self-preservation.

The same principle I assume as that which drives many asylum seekers to seek refuge - and it is not illegal to enter a country via unorthodox means if you are fleeing persecution, war, etc. Until such migrants are processed, no-one knows whether they are genuine refugees fleeing for their lives, economic migrants, or 'chancers' (sorry, can't think of a better description as I need some coffee).

I think that anybody who chooses to buy a house adjacent to a base owned by the MOD must be aware of the past uses, and that it may be used by the MOD in future to meet the same, or alternative demand. That’s a risk you take, wherever you choose to live.

Allsorts Wed 12-Aug-26 07:43:03

If they come here legally, learn the language and work. Welcome. Otherwise no. They see this country as easy
thats why they do not stop in first free country. Send them back.

Yes, that's true. I guess it always pays to look closely at adjacent buildings and properties.
We bought a house a few doors down from a pub - at the time, a sort of 'village-retreat' with a leafy beer-garden. After Covid lockdowns and dwindling trade, it's now become a pub with "theme" nights attracting crowds from the nearest large town. Some 'themes' are more tolerable than others.
But - we chose to live here, so...

A Welsh village, unnamed, is expecting an influx of 1600 migrants, apparently without prior discussion; only seen an interview on Facebook with an irate villager and as yet can find no written facts.
The small village is Piddington, population of 350 in rural Oxfordshire, expecting an influx of 1250 migrants. and is attempting to set up an independent state rather like Passport to Pimlico to prevent it.
Burnham's jaded pronouncements attempting to stir up a class war, old 70s Labour tactic, middle class versus working class, by telling the middle class they must play their part, is rather insulting. All the Labour supporters I know in my leafy rural suburb, busy campaigning against threatened further development, are extremely middle class. As is Burnham.
Anyone who lives in a rural village will tell you a large influx of homeless, jobless people , whatever their ethnicity, is a disaster. Speedily and poorly constructed accommodation in an area with no work, limited medical and educational facilities, few shops, virtually no transport to the towns, and nothing to do.
Mass migration to established countries rarely wo (read history) except in new emergent countries needing population to expand such as America and Australia . Africa would be a good choice, but China already there.
Burnham needs to shut up, gather his team round a table in Downing Street and start doing some hard work on the real problems facing Britain. And get proper legal advice.

'rarely work'

I think it’s Thetford in Norfolk where the protest has happened. Apparently they are a very harmonious village who see nothing but disharmony occurring if so many migrants with totally different cultures being placed in their midst and I must admit I agree.

Why don’t they stay in France? Why do they all want to come here? Ask yourself that. It couldn’t be to do with all the freebies could it?

Regarding black and Asian doctors and nurses these are legal migrants that we do need who put into their midst economy not take out of it.

Tuliptree Wed 12-Aug-26 08:10:51

They don’t ’all want to come here.’ That’s misinformation, Other European countries have asylum seekers as well.

Tuliptree Wed 12-Aug-26 08:13:41

And Thetford is not a village but a market town. But feel free to carry on posting misinformation - a long and honourable tradition by some on GN.

Tuliptree Wed 12-Aug-26 08:15:17

Or did I mean dishonourable .

Sunshinegirls Wed 12-Aug-26 08:16:22

Andy Burnham says wealthy areas must take more illegal immigrants, not just poor areas. He really doesn’t get it, does he? (Copied from X PC)

This is my point we don't want anymore Mega Boat migrants full stop. Not in poor areas and not in wealthy areas.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 12-Aug-26 08:19:21

Thetford has a population of 25,200-25,500

Some areas are in the top 20% of the country for deprivation.

As I said not a village. It’s impossible to discuss the rights and wrongs of Thetford without first having accurate information . But clearly for some on GN that’s an optional extra..

GrannyGravy13 Wed 12-Aug-26 08:29:20

Thetford, Breckland to be precise has 40 asylum seekers housed there.

A few more facts about Thetford, its crime rate is 21% higher than the rest of East of England and over 3% higher than England in general.

Not sure why we are discussing Thetford as it is Piddington, Oxfordshire which is scheduled to have 1,250 asylum seekers housed there…

Another poster mentioned it and said it was a village. Thanks for your info about it. So the current population seem to be doing quite a good job without help from asylum seekers so far as crime is concerned. They’ve added to it recently with their attacks on police officers.

Communities of all kinds have objected to having large groups of immigrants living in their midst. Does the OP not remember all the anti-immigrant riots in various inner city areas following several high profile murders last year?

It is also a question of proportion. House 1250 immigrants in London and it will barely be noticed. Take a small rural community with a population of 370 and move 1250 people in and it is a rather different story.

There are plenty of unleafy villages left. old mining communities in Durham and South Wales. How would the class warriors among those posting here feel if these immigrants were being sent to a small mining village with 370 residents, and just a church and community hall.

Large groups of young men are always a problem.all that testosterone and not yet mature brains Back in the day, 1960s/70s when we had a much larger army than now there were regular public order incidents in garrison towns when lots of young soldiers were released from barracks - and these were white British males in a service where discipline was all and where they had working lives and regular pay.

Try to see this problem dispassionately without all the tedious class posturing. If you lived in a small community anywhere, whether affluent or impoverished, would you want 1250 young me, whether pink blue or green, born and bred for 20 generations in this country, or newly arrived on our shores, young men without jobs, nothing to do all day and no money, suddenly housed (where?) in your village?

Tuliptree Wed 12-Aug-26 08:39:02

But you well know Monica that on here as elsewhere the debate is fuelled by misinformation , lies, exaggeration, hatred, outside forces,. It’s impossible to have the rational discussion necessary to.

Well surely with the resources of the church and the village hall, a whole raft of activities could be planned.

What activities would you suggest for a lot of bored young men in a small village of roughly 370 residents.

.

It’s madness isn’t it? We aren’t living in the 1950’s where migrants in a village would have been happy with joining in community singing/ beetle drives/ ping pong.
These are young men from the modern world, they have mobile phones for games and the internet and want what’s on offer from the world we live in today.A great deal of them are from Muslim countries.
And despite what a few on here usually think, they are mostly economic migrants, they’ve come here for money and material goods.
