Yes, Nigel has won the by-election with approximately 1,000 more votes this time than in the 2024 election, according to ITV breakfast news…

GrannyGravy13 Sat 15-Aug-26 10:54:30

I think the nastiness on this thread is definitely not in the spirit of GN. It appears to be a pile on FriedGreenTomatoes2 for her political views, along with her being unaware of a political mor.

I have an interest in politics, I haven’t got an PPE degree, I also have and always have had an extremely busy and at times stressful life.

If I do not know everything that has ever happened in Westminster, so what it shouldn’t mean that I cannot comment on an item/thread or something I have read/heard in the news without researching it to the nth degree.

I think I will leave the N & P threads for others…

Agree GG13.

Having been away for a few days I'm late to this. Have to say, I'm beyond shocked at some of the nastiness that's apparent on this thread - particularly towards FGT by one poster. So what, if you have different political views - it doesn't give anyone the right to persistently attack another poster. Shameful.

sundowngirl Sat 15-Aug-26 12:01:35

GG13 - Please don't leave!

Many of us appreciate your contributions and really value your perspective here. N&P won't be the same without you.

Please don't let a handful of aggressive voices drive you away. It is incredibly frustrating to see people hide behind demands for facts/data/evidence just as an excuse to lecture and bully others.

These threads need voices like yours to balance out the negativity,

LemonJam Sat 15-Aug-26 12:41:57

There is never a need or excuse for nastiness as outside guidelines. There is a reporting mechanism if aa poster feels any posts are nasty or a 'pile on' that has gone beyond appropriate levels of N and P debate.

It's a given that N and P posts will contain forthright views, debate and views challenged- we see that daily from all sides. We all chose whether or not we post and on which Forums we post. The N and P forum style, debate and challenge does not suit everyone- or it may do sometimes but less so on days they are feeling low, vulnerable, tired, ill going through a difficult time etc. No poster can possibly be aware of what is going on in all posters lives at any given time either.

Those that are not aware of all facts and data on any N and P topic under discussion, for whatever reason, should not be driven away. Similarly those that incorporate facts and data in posts of the topic under discussion should not be driven away.

It's a given that facts and data have relevance to N and P topics- will be openly being debated and will be raised- from all directions.

There have been occasions I have posted a view and another poster has responded with facts that undermine my view. On that basis I'm happy to post that 'I stand corrected' as the facts had weight and I was not as up to date on the facts as the other poster.

On the other hand if someone seeks to undermine my personally held view on no factual basis, just because they have an alternative view, that is a different situation.

I an ideal world all posters should feel valued.

AGAA4 Sat 15-Aug-26 13:37:45

If someone has written something that is factually incorrect there are polite and informative ways to respond.
In this way people may learn. Hostility just makes the victim turn away.

LemonJam Sat 15-Aug-26 14:42:26

I agree.

Oreo Sat 15-Aug-26 14:46:20

So do I and I hope that the poster FGT won’t be too upset by what she has had to read on here.💐

Chestnut Sat 15-Aug-26 16:20:13

I hope FGT and GG13 both stay and keep posting as they always have something interesting to say. Just keep posting and stick up for your beliefs. ☕🍰💐

All views are important otherwise this forum becomes like an echo chamber with everyone agreeing with each other, very boring.

Galaxy Sat 15-Aug-26 16:25:38

Fgt is resilient in my view, as much as you can judge on the Internet. I dont think this is justification for a pile on, it is just meant as a compliment.

I was worried about polanski. I don't think I am anymore, in my view that ship has sailed.

Agreed

Those nodding dogs in the advert.

Oh Yes!

Evening everyone just popping in to say I’m fine, really.
No hard feelings.

Robust debate is good (and interesting).

I just wasn’t up to speed, I got shot down.
Fair enough.

It could’ve been done a little less viciously but hey, I’m over 21.
I’ll try to do better next time (or keep it zipped 😁).

Goodnight for now.

On why Farage did not go to the declaration.

A letter sent to a Reform volunteer ahead of the Clacton by-election, was posted with a first-class stamp, meaning it went out through the mail in advance of polling day itself.

In it, Farage tells the volunteer he'll be watching the results come in at Great Oakley Airfield, with doors open at 11pm, and will speak from the main stage once the result is declared.

That's not a contingency. That's the stated plan, in writing, before a vote was cast.

Days later, Reform told the press Farage was skipping the official declaration because Essex Police had advised him not to attend over a "credible threat." Essex Police say they gave no such advice to him or any candidate.

Whatever the explanation offered afterward, the letter shows where he actually planned to be all along. Not attending the count wasn't a last-minute security decision. It was the itinerary. Farage is a liar.

Source: David Hollas an independent journalist.

foxie48 Sun 16-Aug-26 09:21:46

It is traditional to thank the people who have been involved with the count in some way but Farage is above all of that. He's a liar and he's also lacking in respect for the people who stayed up all night on one of the hottest days of the year to count his votes. Absolutely no manners or belief in tradition.

Primrose53 Sun 16-Aug-26 09:30:07

Journalist and TV presenter Patrick Christys and his wife Emily Carver have today reported that they had death threats and the Police made them leave their home immediately as the threat was so serious. Emily was heavily pregnant at the time.

This followed Patrick exposing people smugglers in Calais. They were told to get a black cab and just go. Not go in their own car as it could have been targeted. Very scary stuff!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 16-Aug-26 09:50:03

Very scary indeed Primrose. I’ve just been reading about it. Imagine being told that, absolutely terrifying.

foxie you sum up neatly the disregard NF showed for those good people in who counted all those votes in Clacton through Thursday night. I can only hope that as he didn’t show up (was he warned off? Official Essex police line is ‘no’ but ‘unoffifical’ after the tragic death of Anne Widdecombe, who knows?) I can only hope he thanked them fulsomely by letter explaining why he wasn’t attending.

Maybe he did make alternative plans a long time beforehand - it seems so according to your evidence Graphite - but again, how do we know how early NF was ‘unofficially’ warned off attending? We don’t.

I agree. He may have been warned by police officers rather than Essex Police making an official statement.

Bearing in mind Anne Widdecombe’s murder, previous threats and attacks on himself and other political figures who have been threatened, if a police officer had had a quiet word in my ear I don’t think I would have turned up either.

Casdon Sun 16-Aug-26 10:35:45

Given that there has been no evidence produced that there was any credible threat to Farage at the count, and both the returning officer and the police confirmed that, and there was a police presence there too, I don’t believe it. As Graphite showed above, he had already confirmed that he would appear onstage at Farage Fest when the result was declared, so it is obvious that he had no intention of attending.

A party leader will get death threats, unfortunately that goes with the territory. They can’t live a political life in the shadows, that loses them public confidence, and votes

Graphite Sun 16-Aug-26 10:36:59

Choice of things to do when you feel you are in danger.

1. Announce in advance that you are going to be at a remote airfield (but within easy reach of the major port of Harwich) for an all-night outdoor party full of people, most of whom you have never met.

2. Go to an election declaration in a brightly lit room at Clacton Leisure Centre where there is a police Gold Commander and plain clothes officers in attendance.

Don’t be fooled. This was all carefully orchestrated so he didn’t have to stand on a stage with a man dressed as a bin.

Just to be clear. Farage had his top operatives on the case.

Darren Grimes, Deputy Leader of Durham County Council.

Nigel was reliably informed there was a threat to his life from IKEA terrorists that are in the country to kill him.

Revenge for the World Cup defeat?

Seems you can get anything in a flat-pack nowadays but at least we know where those missing loose screws went to.

foxie48 Sun 16-Aug-26 11:11:41

There's solid evidence that Farage was never intending to attend the count as he had issued invites to his chosen supporters that he would give a speech after the count at a completely different place that was miles away. Why do people ignore his lies?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 16-Aug-26 11:22:58

Because we like to hear of some hope for the future of our country I suppose foxie. Nebulous I agree, but better than nothing (or the same old anyway) from the UniParty.

I want to see real change. Not just tinkering around the edges.

I like Jenrick’s plans or what I’ve skimmed over so far.

Your post made me laugh Graphite 😁
I can’t defend the indefensible so I won’t try in the face of supportive evidence which is contrary to my former take on things.

However I still support Reform UK. With knobs on.

AGAA4 Sun 16-Aug-26 11:27:02

People need to ask themselves what they would do if their life was threatened. Would you go to an all night party where potential assassins could be?
More likely if the police had warned him he would have been discreetly booked into a hotel under a different name.

foxie48 Sun 16-Aug-26 11:33:34

If there was a creditable threat and the police advised me not to attend, I'd take their advice but appoint someone else to read my letter of thanks.

Robust debate on N and P threads can be good and endlessly interesting indeed. Glad to hear you're fine 💐
