Wrong side driving social media stunt

Following the recent crash in Ireland where 5 teenagers deliberately drove the wrong way on a motorway, killing themselves and seriously injuring 4 people in the car they crashed into, another has happened in Middlesborough. Again 5 young lads driving against the traffic on an A road, all killed plus 2 police officers. A total of 12 people dead in 2 crashes all because they want to get 'likes' on TikTok. What mind thinks up a challenge like this?

Have heard of TikTok many times and always with regard to dangerous behaviours in young people. I believe when young people suddenly mobbed towns and cities, raiding shops and causing havoc, that this also was down to TikTok.
So why is this site allowed to exist??
It is a danger to society.

I couldn't agree more and you are right about the high street mobs. All TikTok encouraged. They made the startling statement a while ago that choking during sex was the new norm! I had a quiet word in my teenage grandson's ear about that one.
TikTok appear to be governed by mindless and dangerous idiots and need to be totally banned from impressionable youngsters with immediate effect.

I get what you are saying ViceVersa but is the good info available on TikTok worth the bad?
Imho young people are being groomed to behave dangerously and endanger lives, including their own. Indeed it was said that young people were being encouraged to start fires during the heatwaves. It can’t go on. As has been said young people are so impressionable.
And there are other platforms offering good info they could access.

If you are worried about choking during sex the first thing to do would be to ban porn not tik tok.
I think blaming social media is probably too easy.

Galaxy Sun 23-Aug-26 10:01:53

I loathe tik tok by the way but am generally more worried about the consequences of banning social media than tik tok itself.

I understand that, but as I said, if you ban one site, another will just pop up in its place. And that's not defending TikTok, by the way - but it's very easy to call for a ban without looking at the deeper root causes of this.

If these feral kids (generally with no driving licence) are happy to steal cars, terrorise people in their own homes, drive when they can barely see above the steering and generally cause havoc and distress in the wider community, then I think it highly unlikely they're going to care much about any changes in the law regarding driving restrictions.

They're criminals so have no regard for the law.

These two recent "wrong way" incidents are tragic on so many levels.

Unsurprisingly, TikTok have remained silent so far about why they are not moderating their site. With Meta currently facing legal action in the USA, you would think they would get their house in order.

Also, many of us will have parented teenage boys who are now responsible adults. We know they need boundaries in their formative years to keep them safe and that they will kick against them but we keep reinforcing them. Those who have not been given boundaries have no understanding of how to behave and what the risks are.

I think we should bring back public information films but have them on sites such as TikTok where they can reach the younger generation.

Of they haven't previous cautions/ convictions I would be amazed.

Galaxy Sun 23-Aug-26 10:53:16

If not of.

Sarnia- I can't believe what I am reading, is this horrific statement really true? What senseless behaviour. My heart goes out to all the victims.

Mine goes out to the innocent victims ; the seriously injured .The two dead police officers.

I have absolutely no pity, empathy or regret over the deaths of the little bastards who killed them.

Yes, this - especially as I have two serving police officers in the family.

My heart goes out to the policemen’s family. Nobody else.
It was another accident waiting to happen.
This group of lowlife have been putting up these videos for some time.

I have seen some suggestions of making driving down the wrong side a separate serious offense, I assume it would currently come under dangerous driving offense. The chance of a mass casualty event in doing this is very high.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 23-Aug-26 17:06:55

Apparently young men perceive risk very differently to mature adults.

That is why they do such daft things, and end up killing themselves.

It must be very difficult for the officers in the army with a lot of headstrong young men, and why discipline must be so strict.

Galaxy Sun 23-Aug-26 17:09:02

At first I thought they were children but 3 of them were adults. There was a 16 year old in the car, I have a separate unease about a 16 year old hanging around with those in their twenties.

Bukkie Sun 23-Aug-26 17:10:03

I wrote my original post before I knew the full details. My thoughts go out to the police officers family too and not the scum who killed them. I am now terrified when I or any of my loved ones go out in their cars.

Delila Sun 23-Aug-26 17:26:03

I wonder if a strong lifestyle element, even addiction, among some young men involves playing electronic video games in which death is not final, it’s reversible? Perhaps driving at speed the wrong way on a dual carriageway doesn’t carry the same obvious risk for them as it does for most of us?

Do teenage boys - it's always boys - possess minds? I think not.

We have these groups of teenage morons, one of them (amazingly) passes a driving test and immediately the gang piles into a wreck of a car and set off to go pure crazy.

I'd suggest that those of the male gender not be allowed on the roads until they reach sensible middle age.......but I suppose that would be trampling on their 'yoomin rites, like'

Think we should follow Australia, where there are restrictions on new young drivers having other young people in the car, apart from siblings.

Just seems very sensible to me.

I agree 100%, but the kind of kids who think it’s good fun to drive the wrong way down a motorway at goodness knows how many mph, often in stolen cars anyway, will probably just stick two fingers up at any such rule.

Magenta8 Sun 23-Aug-26 17:42:43

My thoughts go out to all concerned, including the young men as it is always a tragedy when young lives are lost, whatever the circumstances. I also feel for their bereaved families, as they were after all, somebodys' sons and brothers.

I am ashamed to say that I have been very critical of the police at times and although I don't take it all back, I think we should remember and honour the bravery and devotion to duty that these and many other police officers, show on a daily basis. Their families must be devastated and my heart goes out to them.

ReturningFromExile Sun 23-Aug-26 18:05:15

Two police officers killed by idiots. Five young lives lost to criminal stupidity.

We havnt got enough police to enforce the same idea as Australia.
When you’re on a long journey ( Mostly motorways) do you not notice how few police patrol cars there are.
Then we have the added problem of how to punish them?
Prison isn’t an option as they are full.

Then there’s the problem of who do you prosecute? There has been several cases of older drivers getting confused as to which slip road to use. There have been continental drivers getting confused. Do we charge them all under the same law?
But that’s all by the by because we come back to not enough police 🤷‍♀️

Cossy Sun 23-Aug-26 18:33:23

Completely understand how you feel, but it’s the idiots who post this challenges who need shutting down and frankly prosecuting.

TIK-TOK need to monitor and police their site better, but taking the site away won’t stop frankly ridiculous irresponsible people posting.

God only knows why anyone would even contemplate doing so called “challenges” of this nature is utterly beyond me!

Even before these teenage social media encouraged stunts, there has always been a steady stream of young men and teenagers killing themselves recklessly driving. They own an old banger or borrow a parents car and show off to friends then go off the road and drive into trees or go down embankments or into rivers.

Usually they only kill and/or injure themselves and their friends, but these last two accidents have had innocent casualties as well. Two policemen killed in England, 3/4 people seriously injured in Ireland.

But this sort of reckless driving down roads has always been with us. 45 years ago three youths, chased by the police drove the wrong way down a dual carriageway and hit a car containing a family. The two children in the back were killed, the parents in the front permanently disabled.

One of the children was a playgtound friend of DS. The effect of these accidents cause ripples that spread far beyond the families of those directly involved. DS was profoundly affected by this accident and I sometimes wonder if it is entirely coincidental that my DDiL experienced a similar tragedy which deeply affected her.

Yes me & DH have lost into double figures of friends / relatives when we were young on the roads. But that was before many speed limits, seatbelts, drink -driving prosecutions. & it's not only boys & not only young. Couples having quarrels can also drive very dangerously for eg.

Why on earth didn't Tiktok close this/ these posts down immediately?

Cossy Sun 23-Aug-26 18:37:08

Vivaldi and M0nica very sadly I do agree.
