Full marks Government

I'm pleased to hear that our government is putting sanctions on dealing with Israeli West Bank settlers. It's so outrageously unfair for Israel to encroach on the West Bank in this way.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 16:21:24

But maybe not.
Only with people who don’t count.

AGAA4 Thu 10-Sept-26 16:25:18

Hamas praised all the countries who were in favour of a State of Palestine.
Didn't seem to create much of a stir.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 16:32:34

So a bit of virtue signalling?

Casdon Thu 10-Sept-26 16:38:57

Perhaps they are hopeful that another 10% of the population of Gaza won’t be killed or injured in the next two years by Israel if the sanctions are successful.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 16:42:21

Please Hamas and
Displease Israel

It’s a no brainer for me but I realise I’m swimming against the tide on here.

What if the choice is allow Israel to carry on killing thousands, the majority of whom are women and children- or impose economic sanctions to encourage them to stop?

You can pretend this is a black and white issue that requires us to endorse one or the other, and the other be damned - but we all know it isn’t.

AGAA4 Thu 10-Sept-26 17:03:23

I am against the Netanyahu government not Israel. When one of it's members, Smotrich, has said they will cleanse Gaza of all Palestinians and is doing that it should not be condoned by anyone.

Maremia Thu 10-Sept-26 17:03:51

Does anyone know how the beleaguered people of the West Bank, no , not the illegal Settlers, feel about the proposed sanctions?
Or, does their opinion not count?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 17:21:12

Israel are beleaguered and assaulted by all who surround her. Their only way not to be so is to secure a wider area. They currently hold a tiny area is it 7%? I think I read that one time.

This is complicated thee are no easy solutions or else they’d have been tried years ago. Hamas are determined to wipe out as many Jews as possible. Hence the attacks. I don’t blame Israel one bit. They want to finish the job. E.1

Maremia Thu 10-Sept-26 17:27:03

From whom will they steal the 'wider area'?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 17:27:13

From an article in the Telegraph today:

“ It is perhaps ironic that British-Israeli relations should ultimately falter because of a planning application, given the three years of bloodshed in Gaza.

But the question of who gets to live where is ultimately what the 80-year-old Arab-Israeli conflict is all about.

Israel has made its decision, and so has Mr Burnham.”

Casdon Thu 10-Sept-26 17:28:39

So you’re saying that you think the 38,000+ women and children killed, no doubt more since those figures were published in April, as collateral damage, worthless lives that are dispensable to give Israel land that was not allocated to them post the Second World War? I can’t think of innocent lives in that way.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 17:34:33

From what I have read in the subject, the Israelis vacated Gaza, gifted it to the Palestinians in the spirit of land for peace, but did the Palestinians stop attacking Israelis....? No.

If the Israelis were to gift the Palestinians the entire WB, would the Palestinians stop attacking Israelis....? No.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 17:38:38

Clinton persuaded Barak to sign off on a two State solution nearly 30 years ago. The Israelis were prepared to do it but Arafat refused.

I'm sorry but really...how can you possibly think that it is this simple?

It's not a gift?

The history is highly complex and generation upon generation of people in the area has suffered and is suffering. People.

Mugging up is required. If you type ‘Israel post World War Two land settlement’ it is explained - I haven’t copied it because it’s long winded, but essentially what you said isn’t what happened.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 17:44:05

I suppose it depends upon one’s sources to an extent Casdon

Clinton WAS furious with Arafat.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 17:44:43

But I will do as you suggest tomorrow.

You mean the Israelis gifted them their own land confused?

I bet Lyndon and I would get on well together then! 🤣
Thanks for remembering his surname Maybee I’d forgotten it.

Well I’m very disappointed in him. I did like him because of his devotion to his wife; and I liked Public Image. But he has turned into someone unrecognisable to me.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Sept-26 17:53:59

Hamas are freedom fighters and the resistance. There is no nuance.

Israel fights to survive. We might not like the way they do it but the alternative is the eradication of Israel.

Likewise, and I always check the labels on foodstuff and clothing to make sure it wasn't made/grown in Israel. That is relatively easy, but what about our mobile phones? I currently use an old Samsung phone that used to belong to my son, which might have been made or assembled in China or India possibly, but with parts sourced globally. It's far from straightforward though, as a variety of components seem to have been developed or manufactured in Israel. Likewise software development, and it's a complete minefield trying to find a definitive answer.

Maremia Thu 10-Sept-26 18:17:24

But it is worth trying.

Yes, that’s exactly what Israel is doing, after the massacre of Israelis by hamas there’s not much chance now of a two State solution.
It would never satisfy the extreme element of Palestinians as they won’t waver from their vision of themselves owning all Israeli land and expelling the Jews.
So, that being the case Israel needs a wide buffer zone and that means taking chunks of Gaza and the West Bank.
I hate the violence towards the Palestinians from the Settlers and it isn’t even needed.
But I do understand why Israel needs to take the land.

Samwam Thu 10-Sept-26 22:39:28

Isreal does not need to take the land of Palestine. It has already taken much of Palestine there isn't much left. Just 30% for the temaing Palestinians forced to live in, it's a consentration camp, many have said this. Isreal is comiting genocide a brutal occupation and apartheid. From the start the leaders said all Palestinians must be killed.

Isreal is a settler colonial ethno state.
The only way to peace is for Isreal to stop it's racist ideology and accept two states and learn to live in peace with its neighbours.
Isreal has much control over Palestinian lives.
Isreal has bombed other countries.
It must be stopped.

Thank goodness for Ed Miliban upholding international law. It's a start.
