Well done to AB.

Ran The Great North Run half Marathon, raising funds for the Homeless.

Nice to see such action from our PM. 👍🙂

Andy Burnham's father has died. He has cancelled all his engagements for today and tomorrow.
Condolences to his family.

eazybee Mon 14-Sept-26 14:09:26

I shan't respond as I have heard his father has died.

Totally agree with you Primrose.

A bit like the naked dislike of Nigel Farage shown so very frequently on here

I am sorry AB Dad died without knowing his son became PM due to his Alzheimer’s. I am sure he would have been very proud.

Most people I know who have lost a parent or partner to this horrible illness often say that it is a blessed relief when they pass peacefully. It is very distressing for the person suffering and also the family.

It’s not pretty wherever it comes from, a reasoned argument wins every time.

Ed Davey's courteous and thoughtful response to this bereavement does show that some people can rise above party politics.

LemonJam Mon 14-Sept-26 15:57:32

That-s sad news for AB and his family- as it would be for anyone in similar circumstances, including Nigel Farage. I don't under the mind set for posting negative comments.

Shanksy Tue 15-Sept-26 13:52:06

I think he really cares and is trying his very best to respond to people’s concerns. I like him he’s a good guy and will get things done.

Kier had a plan in place for giving money to councils to build more social housing.

But that is not showing any signs under Andy

Casdon Tue 15-Sept-26 14:25:44

What? Andy Burnham has committed to the largest post-war council housebuilding programme by announcing a £10bn government package to build secure and affordable homes. What else do you expect him to do?

Colls Tue 15-Sept-26 14:45:59

Shame then he is forcing tens of thousands of small landlords out of the sector. And no word of a plan for the renters who will lose their good homes.
For shame AB - it's not just you, it's been the plan of a lot of recent governments. angry angry angry

Graphite Tue 15-Sept-26 14:56:57

Nobody is forcing landlords out of the sector. Tenants have been given more security. A decent landlord would do that anyway.

What is it specifically that you object to about the Renters Rights Act 2025.

Essexgirl145 Tue 15-Sept-26 14:57:52

Well done Andy.

Casdon Tue 15-Sept-26 14:59:13

We have to wait and see on that, but there is no for shame about it that I can see, this is a Labour government, so they understandably want affordable rents. Small landlords have an asset they can sell, and tenants pay such high rent to private landlords now that it is impossible for many to ever save for a mortgage of their own.

undines Tue 15-Sept-26 15:07:52

Really!!! Are we to be taken in by this virtue signalling? Oh dear! As PM there is a lot more he can do if he is sincere. Let's see.............

Graphite Tue 15-Sept-26 15:26:51

60,000 people ran on Sunday many of them to raise money for charity. Are you saying they were virtual signalling?

60,000 runners will be lining up on the start line on Sunday 13 September, and a huge number of these will be charity runners, i.e. runners who lost out on a ballot place but decided to take up one offered by a charity.

Every year these incredible charity runners raise around £25 million – yes, £25 million – for worthy organisations and causes close to their hearts.

I call it doing something selfless for other people.

Burnham has now raised over £40,000 for Changing Lives.

Could you virtue signal by running a half marathon for the charity of your choice undines? If not, and you don’t, knocking somebody else doing it is just sour grapes.

WithNobsOnIt Tue 15-Sept-26 16:17:04

Sorry to hear about Burnham's father. Very sad.

He does seem to be a better communicator and more relatable than that wet lettuce Starmer.

However. Not convinced yet I'm afraid. About of all these good deeds and apparent openness. Supportive comments statements etc.

Smile for the camera Andy.

New tack from his Advisors. You know a bit like the Thick of It meets Yes Minister.

Good publicity for him so far. but let's see how long this will last. When push comes to shove around a few crucial and important issues. Hard choices

He has no chance really of fixing things. Because the massive majority of around 400 Labour so called back bench MP's who really call the tune.

They seem to be paralyzed by Wokeism and Suicidal Empathy.

And will not vote for any real or lasting changes that will help the country regarding economic growth, AI, unemployment, immigration, welfare etc.

Not to mention our real Masters. Bankers, Tech Giants and the Global Rich Elites.

Plus we have also got that awful women, Angela Raynor now well up in the ranks. She can't barely speak properly and k cringe every time l see her being interviewed on TV.

Well, he’s enjoyed his Sunday doing what he wants to. His govt should be doing more for the homeless, especially homeless veterans.

Don't you give it a rest, Primrose as Iam64 tells you to do.
AB is a runner anyway so it's very likely something he would have done, especially with North in the title.
I will pat him on the back when there are no homeless on our streets.

Unfortunately we are unlikely to get all the homeless off the streets. Having volunteered with a homeless charity in the past I know that some choose to live on the streets. Obviously many would love to have a home, but not all.

In addition 'Andy Burnham has pledged to donate 15% of his prime ministerial salary to homelessness charities and causes. This donation will be based on his additional salary as prime minister, which is £75,440. Burnham previously donated 15% of his MP's salary to local causes in his constituency of Makerfield and has a long-standing commitment to charitable giving. He aims to lead from the front in addressing homelessness and has expressed his commitment to making a significant impact in this area.'
The Big Issue.

He isn't just out running because he enjoys it, though he probably does, he is prepared to put his money where his mouth is!

Of course we will see 😀. And of course there is a lot more than can be done. AB has been in power a short while, and it was only a fortnight ago when parliament reconvened. What had you hoped he would get done in that time?

The Renters Rights Act is an excellent step for tenants, and coupled with the new housebuilding programme will give families the sort of security we haven't seen in the UK since the sale of council houses began in the 1980s.

When people have security of tenure and reasonable rents, a reversal of the decline in the birth rate might happen, as it won't take two full-time salaries to run a small family home. If, at the same time, they have more secure conditions at work, then who knows? Some of the resentment of older people, and the fear of the future felt by so many in their 20s and early 30s might start to dissipate, and the country might settle down politically, too.

If that means that landlords can't get as much rent as they are used to, that is unfortunate for some of them, but all but the most self-interested must surely see that it's not all about them. If they offer a good deal to their tenants then why would they leave? It's only going to be the ones who charge usurious rents and insecure tenancies who will be affected. I'm sure that won't apply to anyone on here, so I'm not sure who is going to be 'forced out of the sector', whether as landlords or tenants.

I do understand that it must be difficult to be unable to evict tenants who don't pay, or those who damage property, but the answer to that has to be to tighten laws to stop that, not to complain that tenants should have more options available to them in future. People suffering from the actions of bad tenants are not in that position because of council house building, are they?

Also, it will take time to build large numbers of homes on social tenancies, so there is not going to be a sudden exodus of tenants to new estates.
