The Army has sent in its bomb squad after several men were arrested on suspicion of explosives offences near an RAF base.

A major incident has been declared and residents have been evacuated from “a number” of homes in the Whelford area, near RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire.

Several men have been arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act.

RAF Fairford hosts United States air force personnel and has been used to launch operations against Iran during the war in the Middle East.

Gloucestershire Police said the Army’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal team were at the scene examining vehicles.

A police cordon is in place at the scene. Officers said the incident was “contained”.

I agree Galaxy. We will no doubt find out whether these men were under surveillance already too.

Well I think its about time that we banned the USA using our country as a base for going to war.

"Extreme" Palestinian group?

*No way Extreme ideologically...... Loads of us in the LP and Quakers have been asking for this for a long time.

Go Andy ban them.

I dont agree with the methods of asking for this, btw, and it has to be dealt with within our laws, there are other ways of making views felt and best done peacefully

but I'm clear its not coming from extremist feelings many of us have regarding Trumps appalling warmongering.

I agree. Let’s him fight his wars from his country.

I just read it was a woman living locally who alerted the police! She rang the base and got no answer so rang the police to report men behaving suspiciously at 12.45am. Our security services didn't pick this up! This country is now so vulnerable, more than it has ever been.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 27-Sept-26 16:10:24

Yes a member of the public alerted the authorities. Thank goodness.

I believe the village WhatsApp came into its own. Maybe I should join ours after all.

Casdon Sun 27-Sept-26 16:16:19

The vans stopped in the village from what I read, they were seen and reported.

It is very early days but that looks like counter terrorism have intercepted a serious attack. Often the successes are not acknowledged as much as they should be.

I don’t think counter terrorism did intercept a serious attack
If it had not been for the telephone call it would have gone ahead.
If these terrorists were new in the country chances are they weren’t known to the security services.
But even if they were known they could have been considered a low lying threat.
It has been said that for every known terrorist that person has connections to 30 people. And then those 30 have connections to less serious threat.
We don’t have the man power to keep up to speed with all of them.

Casdon Sun 27-Sept-26 16:24:42

Well, there you go then, it’s all down to the American saviours.

‘Donald Trump has praised the arrests of the five men as "fantastic".
The US president briefly spoke to reporters in Illinois before heading to the President's Cup at Medinah Country Club, adding that the men were "looking to do big damage".
Trump said that Washington working alongside London "worked out great".
"We had them under review for a long time and we got them," he said before leaving.’

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 27-Sept-26 16:26:30

They only have to be lucky once. Our security has to be lucky every single time.

It’s frightening to think about that.

Galaxy Sun 27-Sept-26 16:27:11

Oh well that is slightly different then.
I dont think I would have done that, I would have just thought I was being paranoid. Well done that person.

Casdon Sun 27-Sept-26 16:29:45

I think we should not assume that had they reached the base they would have succeeded, given the entrances are also protected.
We don’t know if as Trump indicated the security forces were tailing them and it was a trap yet either. We will have to wait for more concrete information.

Absolutely.

And quite frankly, I would take absolutely anything said by Trump himself with an enormous pinch of salt until /unless it was backed up by trustworthy sources.

Let’s wait for further update from credible sources.

The lady who reported this incident is a farmer and was returning home from a late night party. She reports they were 5 Middle Eastern men.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 27-Sept-26 20:51:08

Seems to be a case of ‘more good luck than judgement’.
Thank god for that woman coming home in the wee small hours from a party eh? And tgat she reported what she saw. I wonder if Trump will thank her personally …. 😁

Nigel Farages and the word truth cannot be put in the same sentence

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 27-Sept-26 20:59:32

That’s so original.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sun 27-Sept-26 21:05:16

“Thinking about it now, and what could have happened if they had tried to stop me from driving away, I am quite lucky,” the farmer told The Telegraph.

“It is pretty incredible, realising you had a brush with potential terrorists face to face and may have foiled a terrorist plot. It was clear they had just got there. Thank God we spotted them.”

The woman, who did not wish to be named because of concerns for her safety, said the vans struck her as being suspicious from the moment she saw them, as a phone number and lettering on the back of the vehicles appeared to be fake.

She said: “I just thought what the hell are they doing… I saw a group of Middle Eastern-looking young guys running off through the trees. Some of them had masks or balaclavas on, and they all scattered ahead of us as we drove back past.

“Some of them ran into the fields, and some of them turned to run towards the air base. We realised this was something pretty serious.”

There’s a photo of 4 of the 5 men gone viral on UTube and elsewhere. The public aren’t being told. Why not?

Casdon Sun 27-Sept-26 21:46:25

The same picture is on BBC and Sky News Avalon25?

25Avalon Sun 27-Sept-26 22:13:37

The photo is out but we are being told nothing. Presumably they were all born in Cardiff.

Casdon Sun 27-Sept-26 22:16:23

We never are told the details before the facts are established though, that is normal police process- what are you expecting to know before they have done that?

Which details would they be? Do you think we are told the truth about everything all the time?
