The Army has sent in its bomb squad after several men were arrested on suspicion of explosives offences near an RAF base.

A major incident has been declared and residents have been evacuated from “a number” of homes in the Whelford area, near RAF Fairford, in Gloucestershire.

Several men have been arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act.

RAF Fairford hosts United States air force personnel and has been used to launch operations against Iran during the war in the Middle East.

Gloucestershire Police said the Army’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal team were at the scene examining vehicles.

A police cordon is in place at the scene. Officers said the incident was “contained”.

Be intersring to see how this pans out and what was involved?

Security measures don't sound too clever.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 28-Sept-26 20:50:34

Surely not terrorists then if out on bail.
Huge relief all round in so many respects.

This situation does not make me laugh.

It’s the weird speculative comments on this thread that make me laugh, not the situation. Why do people fill fact voids by making things up?

Hmmm
Speculative yes, but not weird.Masked men arrested near the Fairford Air Base, Palestine Action springs to mind, as do Muslim extremist groups out to cause damage.
Other criminal groups out to steal from farms, another quite possible explanation.

Peacelilydilly Mon 28-Sept-26 21:26:14

If there is/was no threat why did the government hold an emergency Cobra meeting? The farmer lady said she saw more than 5 but no mention of the police searching for them. It stinks and I wouldn't trust Wes Streeting as far as I could throw him infact I don't trust Labour full.stop.

I rest my case Oreo.

I rest my case Oreo.

I rest mine too.
None of those scenarios are weird but quite likely.
Weird would be… out there to make crop circles, out there to spot UFO’s, out there for a midnight picnic and so on.😁

Tho if any of the weird stuff turns out to be true I claim my £5

Lucy Connoley refused bail.because of a tweet. Danny Tommo refused bail.trying to stop the boats invading our shores. But heyho terrorist suspects released on bail. If that's not 2 tier justice I don't know what is.

Couldn’t agree more 👏👏

Same here. 👏👏

Agree with you too 👏👏👏👏

I am in the, wait and see camp.

If there is a cover-up, it could be big.

Things dont seem to add up so far.
But wait and see.

If there is something, has some elements of a future film.

Such wonderful imagination. Impressed by the creativity.
Will the 'truth' be a disappointment?

Oreo Mon 28-Sept-26 22:09:58

The truth is quite often more unbelievable than fiction.

She added: 'I don't know how he knows what picture I've got, I've never met him. Literally nobody in any sort of official capacity has been in touch with me or anyone else in the village, no follow up at all, even now, from the police who had my number when I reported it to 999, so it's just very odd

From the farmer.

Is that odd?

The truth is quite often more unbelievable than fiction.

The news seems to be suggesting otherwise. 'A misunderstanding' seems to be the current verdict.

Still, those who enjoy spreading discontent have had a field day. I hope the new task force will be able to counter that sort of thing very soon.

fancythat Mon 28-Sept-26 22:12:43

I thought I had already sent this.

Did it disappear?
I can only see the above post.
Odd!

Possibly 10 men in balaclavas?

I dont know.

More and more doesnt seem to add up.

They have been released on bail suspected of explosive and terrorism charges.
You may be feeling huge relief but it beggars my belief that bail was even considered.

Oreo Mon 28-Sept-26 22:28:05

A misunderstanding?
Possibly.
But only that they weren’t terrorists in that case, as they were still up to no good.
Criminals I can believe.

Oreo Mon 28-Sept-26 22:29:40

I will await the truth with bated breath ( not )

Yes, possibly criminals. But all the talk about Lucy Connolly and whatshisname-who-I-have-to-keep-looking-up was very clearly not connected, unless you consider that we may be being primed to think in 'two tier' (and other) soundbites and accept that 'the left' is out to get us?

I'm not a supporter of 'left' or 'right'. I keep saying that most people probably have views that swing between the wings. That doesn't make them 'centrist' though, or mean that they are 'moderate'. I am adamant (as regular readers know😂) about my feelings about means-testing (right?) and also about rent controls and decent minimum wages (left?). I feel strongly about both, and I'm sure others have equally conflicting views about all sorts of things.

There is no far left in the UK, beyond 'Wolfie Smith' oddbods. No mainstream parties, anyway. There are far right ones (Reform, Restore UK and possibly more) whether or not supporters see themselves as such.

Whether or not that means that we are more or less likely to see terrorism from one side or the other, I don't know, but I believe that the powers that be see Far Right terrorism as at least as dangerous as terrorism in support of extreme religion or foreign powers.

nanna8 Tue 29-Sept-26 01:45:53

Far left are just as dangerous as far right - and a lot more of them. The vast majority, I agree, are neither one nor another but calling so many people far right is just irritating and untrue. It doesn’t distinguish between the true and dangerous far right and those that just feel aggrieved by some policies and like to flaunt their patriotism.

Doodledog Tue 29-Sept-26 06:05:52

Sorry, but what has that got to do with the case under discussion?

Far left, right or centre is going to be dangerous but the young men in this case are not yet identified as being representative of ‘far’ anything.

Also, what is your source for saying that there are ‘far more’ on the far left than far right? Do you mean in Australia, as I can find nothing to suggest that it is true in the UK? Obviously I can’t comment on Australia with any sort of authority (although I do have close family over there with citizenship) as I don’t live there, so if I repeated their views as ‘fact’ it would be misleading. To be fair, none of my lot has suggested that Aus is a hotbed of communism any more than here, but it would be useful to know what you mean.

Also, can you back up your minimising of the terrorist groups who dress in black shirts and balaclavas and mass around places where people are seeking refuge? How do you know they are just ‘aggrieved’ and flaunting patriotism? That is not the view of MI5. MI5 is responsible for investigating all forms of terrorist threat to the UK. Primarily, this stems from Islamist terrorism, extreme right-wing terrorism, Northern Ireland-related terrorism and, to a lesser degree in terms of volume, left-wing, anarchist or single-issue terrorism.

Embarrassment all round but it's clear that there were no explosives involved or they would not have been released on bail.
Most likely they were planning a protest similar to the entry into Brize Norton recently armed with paint and slogans.

fancythat Tue 29-Sept-26 07:16:45

For an RAF Base as in the news as that one, no one answering the phone to the general public[I dont think this aspect has been disputed by anyone in rl], is concerning.
And they dont appear to have spotted 3 vans with several balaclava men, near their fences.

MartavTaurus Tue 29-Sept-26 07:50:25

far away from home
far out of working hours
far from normally clothes
far from carrying out an organised attack
and all very far-fetched and bizarre
😂
