bad writting (sic)

DH and myself went to DGC's Christmas production in their village school last year and he noticed one scene was set in the "Antartic" (sic).
This was written on a large board and carried by a little Reception snowman. Despite my pleas, DH told the Head at the end.

A school is there to educate.

Point it out to the teacher responsible. I was horrified when I was testing one of my granddaughter's spelling lists with her to find a word that she had originally spelled correctly crossed out and a misspelling in adult handwriting replacing it. I crossed out the wrong spelling and wrote in the correct one again. I also showed my granddaughter the correct spelling in one of my dictionaries so that she had the back-up of published authority as well as her grandmother's word.

I'm another one who's horrified that so many young teachers today seem to lack basic skills in literacy.

They've all got degrees, but apparently it doesn't matter whether they can spell or use grammar correctly.

Appalling, how on on earth are the children going to learn to spell Etc, when the teachers themselves can"t get it right !

If this was in proper school, as opposed to pre-school, I wouldn't have hesitated to point out the spelling error to the staff. Because it's pre-school, I'm less inclined to do that, given that spelling isn't really one of the things that they are there to teach the children in their care. Even so, it's such a glaring error that I can't believe that none of the staff have noticed it.

If I do decide to mention it, perhaps I'd better wait a week or two. I threw them into confusion this morning simply by asking if their pet guinea pig, which they had brought into the classroom today, was a girl or a boy. It turns out that they had no idea, and had never even thought about it before. I think they thought I was a little mad (especially after I suggested that they turn him/her over and have a look). Still, one of the great things about being a grandma is that I no longer lose much sleep over what young people think of me )))

DGS has, this week, been talking about 'poppys'

My OH was a Mathematician. Once DD1 came home with a math problem. Her dad looked at it, looked at the workings teacher had given students, and exclaimed what an absolute load of tosh. How are children ever going to grasp the fundamentals being taught like this. DD1 had to go back to school and explain the total rehash of the quadrilateral workings of the equation in book. To give the teacher her due. She stood at front of class and admitted her error. She then went on to re-teach the maths according to DH's formulae saying "this is how I should have taught you according to ____'s dad"

I agree this would be a problem in infant school, but in preschool none of the children are going to be anywhere near being able to read a word like 'writing' so I would say nothing.

I don't know what, if any, qualifications are needed to work in a preschool, but I would have thought kindness and care for the children was more important than anything else.

Perhaps it does actually matter less than it did Ana. After all we are no longer sitting on high stools, paid for our competency in spelling and our copperplate. Language is ever changing too although the things that I mind will still irritate me as, no doubt, the errors I make will irritate others.

I would go ahead and mention the mis-spelling to the pre-school manager, very tactfully: 'I hope you don't mind my mentioning this, but....' If you don't it will only rankle with you, MamaCaz, so, out with it!

Well, Gracesgran, it beats me how anyone can even get a degree without being able to spell, punctuate and use grammar correctly - especially an English degree!

Language may be ever-changing but I doubt whether 'writting' will ever become an acceptable alternative spelling option

I am pretty sure I am right in saying that 2 or 3 years at teacher training college doesnt involve a degree.
I know someone who has gone down this route, and have to say that she is fully aware that she is not all that bright.
She teaches primary because she knows she is not up to teaching secondary.

Ana I wasn't saying we should disregard the teaching of spelling, just that it may not be as important as it once was because of the changes in the breadth of what we need to know.

I also think the size of individuals vocabulary has grown and this may be partly because we are not so restrictive in the way we let our children write. However, "writting" is wrong and should be corrected. I just don't see this issue as black and white.

At my local GP surgery they are holding a "buy a numbered square" competition thing to raise funds. Bad enough that they have to raise funds for an NHS GP surgery, but the poster says "Buy a square for the chance to win one of 2 Turkey's!"

There is also a collection point for "Stamp's" to raise funds too.

My five year old son came home from school with picture he had painted of a wet day. The teacher had written his description on it :"It is raning". I thought he was too young to mention the mistake!

However, a few years later he showed me his composition with "If I were..." corrected to "If I was...". He said, I did get it right, didn't I Mummy? - and I had to reassure him while trying not to give him a bad attitude to his teacher!

soontobe, you need a degree to obtain Qualified Teacher Status.

You can't just go to teacher training college, do the course and start teaching children of any age these days.

This thread is making me think.
I think I have either got the wrong end of the stick about someone. Or else need to dig deeper about what and where she studied.
