I was idly wondering why home-made marmalade, although appearing to have a good set, goes runny when a spoon is stuck in. I vaguely remembered hearing an explanation once. Thixotropy, said DH and from the dictionary I've just downloaded, it means the property of some gels that turn liquid when stirred. He's just a smart a**e!

If word gets out, no doubt some celeb or other will name their unfortunate child Thixotropy wink

I went into a DIY shop once, 35 years ago, and asked for thixotropic paint. They looked bemused - but sent for the boss. He knew exactly what I meant. I now realise that it was an unusual request but it seemed quite normal to me. It must have come from science lessons.

Hame, if he was in a DIY store. That paint was generally known then as thixotropic, and there was a lot of publicity about this new paint that was less messy than the existing types (except when used by someone like me, I always get more paint on myself than on the doors)

He should have recognised that name, if he was in a DIY store.

I have never backed into a freshly painted door leaving a bum print on door and white paint on black knickers, oh no.

Cornflour is the opposite. Runny until you put pressure on it then it hardens.
