Could of should of would of

Has anyone else noticed the increasing use of "robbed" instead of "stolen"? I was watching "Homes Under The Hammer" (I love it andam not ashamed) this morning and lovely Dion Dublin was talking about some space having been robbed from one area to give more room somewhere else; this is just one example.

Oh, isn't pedantry great! If I can let off steam over what some would call minor things, then it stops me exploding over the big things and therefore could be seen as being beneficial.

I have just read a novel and the words 'hence why' were used at least ten times. It's a shame because it was a good story but shouldn't the editors have noticed?
I wouldn't so far as to write to the publisher but my DH would!

I get angry and frustrated at the constant misuse of grammar and the use of of instead of have is particularly annoying - where on earth did this come from ? Another pet hate is saying "in the morning" after am and in the afternoon/evening following pm. Grrrrrr !

I quite agree, grammar and poor speaking seem to be the way of things now but it isn't just the young who are guilty, I often look at the newspapers or listen to the TV and it is often just as bad there. What can we do except correct when we can.

Some mistakes are 'typos', especially its and it's. It's easy to overlook that kind of thing when you get used to letting the word bank supply the word for you. Here in the North East, you might as well accept that you'll hear would of, could of and should of and see it written too. One that has always annoyed me is:

Teacher: "Where's Johnny?"
Pupil: "He's went to the toilet, Miss."

It's pointless to react to it up here. You're a lone voice. Correcting people, even in school, is only likely to get you an incredulous look. ?

Some pet hates:

1. Women are now referred to as 'Guys'[as are men, correctly]

2. The answer to 'How are you?' is now often 'Good'. Hope they are also 'well'!!

I agree that there is too much poor grammar especially on official notices, in broadcasting, and in books. To those who say it's a sign that language evolves I would say that is ignorance masquerading as progress.
In addition to those already mentioned my current hates are, confusion of incidences/incidents; diffuse/defuse.

I'm not sure that I can take seeing of used instead of 've, anymore. I want to scream every time I see this in print.

I hate the habit of saying 'I went' when they mean 'I said' and in reply to 'How are you?, back comes the reply 'Good' instead of well. I won't get started on punctuation, spelling or pronunciation, such as broadcasters that say sikth instead of sixth and the sound t instead of to.

I am always correcting people's grammatical and spelling mistakes, but then I get insulted and called the grammar police and told to "get a life". It doesn't stop me, I just tell people I need to go back to school.

They need not I need!

Has anyone noticed, that some TV presenters are now saying, for example, two hundred forty five, instead of, two hundred AND forty five?

Very American and very annoying.

In a cafe or restaurant, it irritates me when people ask the waiter or waitress, "*Can I get...?*" No! You can't get it. The kitchen is off limits to you! The waiter/waitress will get it for you! Waiting staff don't ask what you want to get! They might ask what they can get for you or what you would like.

Whilst being a pedant, who cringes at all the errors mentioned, I also accept that language is continually developing. Think of all the words that are now in the dictionary which didn't even exist when most of us were young. I particularly hate seeing apostrophe's used incorrectly as it it so simple to teach people how to use them properly (ex teacher). However the true aim of language is to communicate. Having taught adults to read and worked with dyslexic students, I would be very careful about correcting written work, as I have no idea how long and what effort may have gone in to producing it. Grammar and spelling are very easy for some people and very hard for others. For some people, just putting pen to paper is a triumph.

A friend told me a lovely joke about predictive text: "The man who invented predictive text has died, his funfair's next Monkey..."

I think most of us accept that language evolves and that for some language and even writing is difficult, crazygran, but Pedants' Corner is just that - a place for pedants to gather for a moan and a grumble...

Daddima. I hope you have been into the Newsagents and Cash Machine "shop" and told them about their errors. I find it REALLY annoying when till operators offer me one "pence" change. I have been known to tell them to look at the offending coin and read the "one penny" sign on the back!

I trust Crazygrandma made the deliberate mistake to check we were paying attention.
