This word has just been used in relation to a speech cancelled by Richard Dawkins.
Ranks alongside deplaning and detraining grrrr

That's a new one on me! But perhaps we can coin some more: I think I'm ready to deforum and head for bed now.

It wasn't Dawkins who cancelled the speech. It was his speech that some other twits cancelled.

There's also "no-platforming" and I expect there'll be re-platforming before long.

Tell the silly students who are doing all this stuff to stick up for free speech instead of behaving like spoiled brats.

I'd be quite happy to destudent a large proportion of the university population anyway, many of whom shouldn't be there in the first place.

I thought, many years ago, that my brother (who lives in the US) had made up deplaning. But then I was once at Newark airport and the announcer said "we are just pausing boarding while the other flight deplanes"

I do not like!

I have always hated 'deplane' what's wrong with disembark?

JaneD3 Wed 02-Aug-17 09:24:05

Too challenging to enunciate all those syllables?grin

I suppose "disembark" literally means get off a boat (disboating? deboating?) but at least there's some logic, as it is the opposite of "embark". The other examples don't correspond to a verb such as "to plane" or "to platform", which is why they sound wrong. We can't deplane if we never planed in the first place.

If you are doing woodwork, you can plane, but if you overdo it there is NO way to "deplane"!

Baggs Wed 02-Aug-17 17:08:47

One boards a plane so I suppose one should deboard or disboard it. Deplane is no worse than those, I think, and it is obvious what it means.

I thought deplatforming would be the opposite of detraining which I have heard in announcements on trains!

PamelaJ1 Mon 25-Sept-17 13:14:55

I once heard a sports journalist confidently predicting that an althete would be sure to 'podium'.

BBbevan Mon 25-Sept-17 14:10:20

Or an Olympic athlete was ' medalled !

Wheniwasyourage Mon 25-Sept-17 18:11:01

Was 'detraining' not used during the war as a military expression? Not that that excuses it!

SueDonim Mon 25-Sept-17 18:53:18

The latest I've read today is detransition, for someone who has changed gender but now wishes to return to their original gender.

Christinefrance Mon 25-Sept-17 19:08:30

Where will it all end and can I de-age ? smile
