JackyB, you are not alone.

Lexisgranny, I'm not sure about Angela Rippon. It was Jan Leeming that Pamela Stephenson used to parody doing that in Not the Nine 'o Clock News all those years ago. But in any case 'guerrilla' is a Spanish words and all Jan Leeming did was pronounce it the Spanish way. All the better to distinguish it from Gerald the Gorilla (who bloody does eat daffodils).

My pet hate is 'tumeric' no its tuRmeric.

Grandmafrench Sun 04-Oct-20 22:00:25

Me too, JackyB - Feb ew ary, instead of FebRUary. I feel the same about Sec a tree when it should be Sec ruh tree.

And how many times do tv reporters refer to the 'Pleece" instead of Police ?

I was taught and still say, I think, negosheation and negosheate, but negoseeation seems to be the new way of saying the word.

Surely, negoteaation would be more sensible?

Lexisgranny Wed 07-Oct-20 15:42:18

LadyH. Google Angela Rippon and guerrilla, it was much spoken about at the time.

Plenty of other words where people say 'sht' instead of 'st' irritate me though, such as 'shtreet' instead of 'street'.

With you all the way, MamaCaz. I’m fed up now of hearing on the news about our shtudents. The annoying thing for me is that I didn’t even notice it until DH kept pointing it out.

MamaCaz Wed 07-Oct-20 17:46:03

Exactly the same here, Maggiemaybe - I too was blissfully unaware of it until my OH pointed it out, and rather wish that I still was! grin

last night on LBC radio at i think 10pm news bulletin, the youngish sounding woman newsreader said a word that i did not recognise, and assumed it was some technical term.
the report was about the CofE, and inquiry into how it mishandled reports of abuse.
the word which i had not grasped was, clur-ghee.
it was clergy, pronounced with a hard g.

"Jewlery" instead of "jewellry", it drives me crazy.

PinkCakes Wed 07-Oct-20 19:50:49

burgulry instead of burglary

on a tv advert (Vax?)- Platnum instead of Platinum

Lin52 Sat 01-May-21 13:02:56

Expresso instead of Espresso, innit, instead of isn’t it, wiv it, instead of with it, ouse, instead of house, homicide instead of murder ( do we have to take on Americanisms), just a few that get me going, not really, just observations with the poor use of English. I wonder if they mess about with French or German in this way??

grannylyn65 Sat 01-May-21 13:10:47

Is anybody else sitting muttering to themselves !
Isn’t ‘muttering ‘ a glorious word?

Kim19 Sat 01-May-21 13:11:12

I'm another one on the 'Febury' bandwagon. Absolutely makes me cringe every time. Ugh!

Witzend Sat 01-May-21 13:15:06

I notice a lot of ‘shtreet’, ‘shtroke’, ‘shtrong’, lately. These things seem to spread (shpread) like a pandemic nowadays.

One that’s not at all new but still irritates me, is CONtribute, instead of conTRIBute.

Oh, and on the shipping forecast, which I often listen to before nodding off, Cape Wrath pronounced to rhyme with math, instead of moth.
IIRC it’s even spelt somewhere in the bible as ‘wroth’ and ‘wrathful’ would sound all wrong pronounced that way - hardly a word in very common usage though.

I’m old fashioned enough to expect Beeb presenters, at least on R4, to talk proper!

NotSpaghetti Sat 01-May-21 14:01:07

REEsearch is annoying.

welbeck Sat 01-May-21 14:06:32

murder is a judicial term.
homicide covers any culpable killing of a person, so it would include eg manslaughter.
whether a homicide is ajudged to be a murder or manslaughter is for the court to decide.

MiniMoon Sat 01-May-21 15:21:01

Isn't it jewellery? I've always pronounced it as jewlLEry. Of course I may well be wrong.
My Dad always said redchester for register. It always grated on me, but he was my Dad so I never corrected him.

Atqui Sat 01-May-21 16:20:41

As Imread the first few posts ,I thought of Turmeric , then someone mentioned it first. I don understand why people leave out the R.

Atqui Sat 01-May-21 16:21:00

Sorry about typos.

grannysyb Sat 01-May-21 16:28:30

Therilling instead of thrilling, also a very annoying ad for a car which be petrow or diesel, people can't seem to pronounce l.

Deedaa Sat 01-May-21 16:38:01

I'm another one driven mad by people saying CONtribute instead of conTRIBute and there are several other words where the emphasis is always stressed. Still I've managed over 25 years with my American SiL and almost trained him not to say Nucular and Aluminum!
