Pronounciation on TV

I agree with Jillybird very annoying! My DH says went instead of gone! For example when watching Pointless he says "I would've went for .... Drives me crazy! He's an educated man too and was a Deputy head. He's from the Welsh valleys so I think it's something to do with that maybe.

Isn't it jewellery? I've always pronounced it as jewlLEry. Of course I may well be wrong.
My Dad always said redchester for register. It always grated on me, but he was my Dad so I never corrected him.

I believe it's pronounced Jewelry with the stress on the first syllable.
I know we write it jewellery in the uk.

The one that grates on me is the grunt at the end of words, particularly when it follows a glottal stop. Nobody in Soapland is ever pregnant - they are always pregnun'uh, for instance.

There is a family on Gogglebox who do this all the time - the one with the knitting mum and the dad who stood as an MP or something a while ago. They all do it at the end of every sentence uh.

Katek I hate "for free" too - and also "on sale" (meaning in the sale).
I suppose this isn't really pronunciation though - it's use of language ("bear me a minute" and "the proof is in the pudding" being other things I'm hearing a lot).

And the Beth woman on BBC news who never pronounces her ‘t’s to sound down with the kids? Just makes her sound stupid.

Chamber's dictionary states that negotiate is pronounced nu-go'-shi-ate. I fondly imagine that is how I pronounce it, but I may be wrong.

For me its 'te' or 'ta' (or a similar noise) instead of to.
"I'm going te start here" - yes the little word 'to' is almost lost in spoken English but 'te' is just lazy.
I even noticed prince William using it the other day, I hope he doesn't pass it on 'te' his children.
I think he intended 'te' attend a fund raising event.

It’s true but I’m trying not to let my life be ruined by the fact that I’ve always said appree-see-ate and nego-see-ate and it’s evidently wrong! ??

My latest pet hate is words ending in -ing pronounced as if they end in -in. Priti Patel does this, as does one of the BBC health correspondants. So do many Lancastrians.

It's far too short to read threads on topics that don't interest you, and take the trouble to comment.

kali2 this IS pedants corner after all - this kind of thread is especially created so that people with no interest in petty pedantry don't need to waste their short lives on it.
