I like the system several supermarkets now use, where you scan your own purchases and put them straight into your own bags. Saves a lot of handling, and quicker!

Children in shopping trollies
(230 Posts)Does anyone else get mad at seeing children sitting inside shopping trollies.
After successful lobbying at Waitrose I got this knocked on the head. However, at Tesco I regularly see kids in nappies and outside shoes sitting in trollies. This is so dangerous Even without the virus, sputum, dog wee and dog poo contain horrible bacteria. When I have complained the assistants say they will not approach mothers with children in trollies. I even wrote to Tesco head office many years ago and had a reply saying that this would be stopped. Laugh out loud.
I did speak to a mother once and she told me p off.
I can see there could be safety concerns with a child is sitting inside a trolley but I wouldn't want to criticise as I can remember occasionally doing this in desperation when my children were young - I wouldn't claim to be the perfect mum. However I think it's unhealthy to be obsessed by the thought of dirt and germs. I have two daughter in laws - one who takes a laid back attitude to dirt etc and the other who is constantly wiping down the child and surfaces.
I have no idea how to do smart links, so you have the long winded version

I hope you keep your social distance Soozie woozy and don't forget your mask. Get your facts right and quote them to everyone. Do you speak to people like you answer on this forum? sad
You’ve followed me this thread from another one to have a pop at me. Your post is just silly.
How nasty! I have been amazed how much my health has improved since mask wearing, hand sanitiser and mainly online shopping! No wonder!
now that I am not exposed to 2nd hand sperm, poo, wee and other bodily functions!
I dont think its healthy to put kids in the trolley because their outside shoes have germs on, but I admit to having resorting to it one or two times because of not wanting to chase two toddlers in separate directions.
Well done for making a mother feel like a bad person in front of her child?????? Mothers and Women should help, advise and praise each other.
then hand my bags to the Assistant for repacking!
Grandma11 Congratulations! A true Rebel!
Just think! If we'd met earlier we'd have been known as Bonnie and Clyde of the Supermarket world, striking terror amongst the staff whenever we crashed through the automatic doors on our mobility scooters!!
My kind checkout ladies not only repack, but also come out from behind their work- stations and help place my bags in the scooter's hold-all!
The perks of Old Age!
Apologies for being so frivolous in such a serious thread

Gosh this is a long thread. Haven't read it all yet. I never thought about there being germs in there, although I do cringe when I see children sucking the handle in front of them.
When my two eldest were small and one sat in the seat and the other in the trolley, they once managed to tip the trolley over. Nowadays if I see someone with their child sitting in the main part of the trolley, I have been known to warn them that it could tip over, but I am wary of approaching people about this.
I had thought of making an all-in-one seat liner and handle cover for my DiL's to cover the handle of the trolley when shopping. Has anyone seen a pattern for something like this? I suppose I could measure up when I go shopping next time. Will keep you posted.
Your last paragraph ??
Mollygo I was only spraying the handle not the whole trolley!!
And I take my own hand sanitiser. The one at "my" sainsburys is really runny and takes forever to dry.
Totally agree - that and standing/sitting on the packing shelves!
Agree NambyPampy and Nanna58. Chill people.
I'm afraid to say that I'm a bit of a Rebel when I comes to Supermarkets! Due to poor mobility, I used to use one of the supermarket's ride on Carts, but the seats were often very worn, never cleaned, and when I once wiped one with a babywipe thinking it was a food spill, it was obviously excrement, so I gave up using them for good, and started using my own Mobility Scooter instead, hanging a strong shopping bag onto the handlebars, and another one at my feet to put the heavier items in.
I had in fact created my own personal Shopping Trolley!
It was good fun to say the least, I soon found out who their store detectives were as they followed me around as I filled my shopping bags! At the checkout, I would empty the contents onto the belt, tip each bag upside down and give it a good shake to prove its emptiness, then hand my bags to the Assistant for repacking!
The Wines and Spirits isle was the best bit, my late Father was a heavy Whiskey drinker, and on some visits I would buy two bottles of a good single malt for him, the looks on some people's faces as I popped them straight into my shopping bag were amazing, as we're the Tanoy calls for a code for security to go to the Isle I was in! The staff soon got to know me, I normally visited at quieter times early evening, got to know one regular checkout Lady quite well, and eventually the security staff started to trust me and stopped following me around every time!
The Law states that this is not an offence unless you go.outside of the store without paying for goods. I had previously asked several times for their mobility carts to be serviced and their faulty brakes looked at after I stood up to get off one and it shifted causing me to fall into the floor. The automatic Brakes that should come on when stationary were well and truly knackered, so 100% the action that I was forced to take after that incident was entirely the company's own fault!
Please- there must be other more important things you could worry about- give parents a break
Sorry but I would rather a youngster in the trolley seat than ru Ning around the store

If Waitrose put a stop to this practice after you complained- why did you bother to move to tesco?
Too much time on your hands if that's all you have to worry about.
Completely agree, especially when those little seats are provided. I used to have one in the seat and one walking nicely on reins alongside. Also hate people who put their shoes/feet on the seats of trains. Oh, and teachers who sit on tables with shoes/feet on chairs and then tell children not to do the same!
Children need to build up their immunity although I am a little reticent now I know they contain sperm!
well, that's quite a bewildering thought.

We can’t live in a sterile world and nor do we need to. We develop natural immunity and largely are not at risk at all from supermarket trolleys. We have had them for 50 years and I’ve never heard of anyone being ill from touching them. During this pandemic we must be more cautious and at least wipe down the trolley handles but I can’t see any need to go mad about it.
I agree. When I first read the OP, I thought everyone would say: "What is the problem with that?"
My grandson doesn't tend to go in the trolley because he likes to skip ahead but I wouldn't have any issue in sticking him in the back bit with the food if that's what he wanted to do.

A book shouldn't be evaluated just for its cover
What you see is a snippet (seconds or minutes) of that family's life and there could be valid reasons why those actions take place.
It is so annoying, especially as they are constantly being fed things to keep them quiet, I’m sure they are not paid for. I blame the store managers for turning a blind eye to it,
