I can see there could be safety concerns with a child is sitting inside a trolley but I wouldn't want to criticise as I can remember occasionally doing this in desperation when my children were young - I wouldn't claim to be the perfect mum. However I think it's unhealthy to be obsessed by the thought of dirt and germs. I have two daughter in laws - one who takes a laid back attitude to dirt etc and the other who is constantly wiping down the child and surfaces.

I like the system several supermarkets now use, where you scan your own purchases and put them straight into your own bags. Saves a lot of handling, and quicker!

Just need M&S to get their act together. You can’t buy more than £45 on their pay-and-go, then you have to pay for the rest separately. It’s hard to do a week’s shopping for £45 in M&S. Sainsbury’s and Asda Scan and pay isn’t limited, but you pay at the scan and go till.

The OP started the thread about children actually sitting in the trollies in hindsight I should have started a different thread.
I was involved in food prep for the public for fund raising. I had to renew my hygiene certificate as rules regulations and findings are forever evolving.
I was totally shocked by results the tests revealed regarding latent bacteria on trollies and high chairs.
I myself did strap my DS and DD in a the trolley child seat when they were little as it was easier when shopping.
My DIL and DD chose not to use trollies or high chairs because of the info I had given them. My intention was not to preach to anyone but to highlight something we wouldn't think about clair1966 your remark is ridiculous.

I think a lot of posters are getting the wrong end of the stick regarding child in actual trolley versus child in trolley seat.

Please do approach me and give me an earful if you see me with my grandson in a trolley. I will enjoy giving you a mouthful back! It is a last resort when I am exhausted from chasing him round. He is too big for reins as he drops to the floor and becomes a dead weight. He is too big for a pushchair which I cannot manage with a trolley anyway. He has absolutely no sense of danger and is, without a doubt, one of those unruly children a lot of you complain about. Obviously we keep shopping trips to a minimum but occasionally I am forced to shop with him. Once in a trolley he will sit quietly as it makes him less anxious. By his age, my own children and other grandchildren would have walked along holding the trolley. I would give anything for him to have followed their suit but it is wishing for the moon. How single mothers (and an awful lot of fathers walk away when a child has special needs) cope I don't know but my hat goes off to them.

I have to admit it was the only way I knew where my 2 year old daughter was! She sat in the trolley her sister lay across the bars underneath - By the the time we got to the checkout, she'd taken all the sticky prices tags off and put them round her person!! this as over 40 years ago.

Agree not good. If they are too big to sit in a child seat type trolley, then putting them in the trolley with their outdoor shoes on isn't ok. It becomes my business if I then place my food items where those shoes have been.

Most things we buy are already packaged and so won’t touch the trolley anyway. We can wipe our shopping when we get home if we wish. IMHO the pandemic has brought out the worst in some people who are now ridiculously aware of bacteria and hygiene. It’s not good to live in a sanitised environment. Do what you feel is appropriate and leave other people alone.

That's what I've been thinking all along. I did post much the same earlier. How does all this contamination get onto food that is in packets?

Also, while not a nice thought, is sperm actually full of bacteria?

And, despite all this dreadful dirt everywhere we're all still alive...

One of our GC us on the Autism Spectrum, when he was younger in f putting in him the goods part of the trolley enabled their parents or us to shop with them being safe, I really couldn’t worry myself about other shoppers opinions.

As the trolleys are designed to take a small child, how can anyone complain when small children use the seat? Isn't just about everything in a supermarket wrapped in plastic anyway? We have hand gel etc. Are you aware you are consuming 5g of plastic a week? The equivalent of a credit card. And expectations of pristine supermarket trolleys only serve to encourage more single-use plastic in our shopping bags.

Just seen this thread... I saw this on Wednesday.
I was in Costco.. A child about 7 yrs old was laying under one of the big trollies on the lower section shelf which is designed for large objects, his mother had another child in the trolley. These trollies are really grubby especially on that shelf.
She was busy talking to another woman with her kids, not taking much notice. When I saw her I thought "that's a first" never seen that before, then the little chap slipped forward, he tried to save himself from falling out , the trolley ran over his little hand, these trollies are really big and heavy. It must have been so painful
Screaming with pain his mother getting irritated by tried to get him to show her his hand, poor little chap inconsolable. I stopped to see if I could help but she wasn't interested. Me think a trip to A&E was probably on the cards.
How stupid, why would you let your child do that?

I have got to agree with hithere. Have you forgotten what it's like to have to take children shopping. I would have sat mine in a trolley in the little seat purposefully designed for this. Germs everywhere. You can't live in a sterilised world!

Where do you suggest a mother puts her child when shopping? The seat in a trolley is provided to put a child in. I don't think anyone can manage pushing a pushchair as well as a shopping trolley.

I think the OP means children sitting inside the trolley where the food is supposed to go, Theoddbird with their mucky shoes on.

Not sure about the rest of the nasties, though.
