"Prie-vacy" for "Privacy". One of the many horrible Americanisms that have crept in.

Soozikinzi Thu 24-Jun-21 13:40:17

Axe for ask seems to be creeping in also all the fick and fin which my husband cannot abide !

Sorry to say this but my adult son a father himself , says “free” instead of three - his late father did too.
I have told him ( not in company) that I stopped saying free for three when I was about 3. My mother was a serious CORRECTOR on all matters related to speech - even mid flow, maybe I should have corrected him earlier it’s just that I have always believed that it’s what you say that matters. He went on to achieve highly in education and has a successful career

Alex Beresford (he of weather and Piers Morgan fame) insists on calling Wales, wells.

DH always pronounces weight as wait! Drives me round the bend.

Bernard Shaw had this to say in his preface to Pygmalion:

”The English have no respect for their language and will not teach their children to speak it. They cannot spell it because they have nothing to spell it with but an old foreign alphabet of which only the consonants – and not all of them – have any agreed speech value. It is impossible for an Englishman to open his mouth without making some other Englishman despise him”.

I agree that many people find spelling a challenge. There is such a mismatch between the spoken and written word.

Esspee Thu 24-Jun-21 14:26:38

pat9 Thu 24-Jun-21 14:29:53

Cid24 Thu 24-Jun-21 14:37:31

Nucular instead of nuclear!

Cid24 Thu 24-Jun-21 14:38:37

Aha and I’ve just read the official list! Seems I’m not alone ?

Musicgirl Thu 24-Jun-21 14:41:02

Candidit instead of candidate, bin instead of been. Would of/could of/should of/ instead of would have/could have/should have.

Saggi Thu 24-Jun-21 14:44:53

This is how language evolves ...isn’t it! By mis-pronunciation or mis spellings. If any of you read Chaucer in the ‘raw’ most of it is unreadable .... but he wrote in English!! The english of his day. He would not recognise our language and think he’s in a foreign land. Do you call it a phone or telephone .... bus or omnibus..... tele or television.... car or automobile..... it’s always been this way hasn't it? Or Chaucer would be able to understand us .... instead of thinking where he’d landed!

montymops Thu 24-Jun-21 14:50:29

Any word ending in ‘ing’ - makin, eatin, thinkin printin - etc etc I always thought the word wrath was pronounced with an ‘or’ sound - wrorth -

Bazza Thu 24-Jun-21 14:57:26

Plarstic instead of plastic. Haitch instead of aitch.

Mollygo Thu 24-Jun-21 14:58:39

Weight is W+eight so how on earth are people pronouncing eight?
Or how are the pronouncing they? If weyt sounds different?
Wait is w+ ait (a small river island).
How are they pronouncing wait?
I do have one or two friends from different places who pronounce these words with more of an i sound- Arv reelly pud on wight since lockdown is what it sounds like on our WhatsApp calls.
Other wise I think this is a wind up.

Mollygo Thu 24-Jun-21 15:00:29

My pet hates are haitch instead of aitch and garridge instead of garage.

Blinko Thu 24-Jun-21 15:14:54

I haven't RTFT, but how about 'loth' and 'loathe'?

As in 'She was loth to hang out the washing in the rain' vs 'She loathed him with a passion'.
