A survey has revealed the most irritating mispronounced words:

Aepgirl Thu 24-Jun-21 12:24:41

Sarfnoon for ‘this afternoon’. Prostrate for prostate. But I think the best, and funniest (even though it is also sad) was when my friend told me that her daughter had had a vasectomy

Growing0ldDisgracefully Thu 24-Jun-21 12:28:35

Choclate for chocolate.
Somethink for something. Or even suthink for something?! (I have a friend who uses both of those!).
And how about Nigella Lawson's pronunciation of microwave???

Toddleo Thu 24-Jun-21 12:29:43

People who say "think" in place of "thing" as in
"I can't think of anythink to do"
surprisingly common.

icanhandthemback Thu 24-Jun-21 12:30:34

My mother has always said "tatics" for "tactics" which drives me mad. However, I cannot for the life of me remember how to pronounce "integral". Is it "Inter-gral," "In-tee-gral" or "Int-egg-ral"? My husband laughs every time I have to use the word because I struggle with it. My son also gets irritated when I say, "Theatre" because I pronounce it "Thee-et-er" instead of Thea-ter." Most of the words I mispronounce are because I was reading words I'd never heard spoken when I was a young child. I didn't actually know about phonics so I took a guess at what they said and the mispronunciations in my head, stuck!

I had thought it was from a cricketing analogy but my local garage man always says ' I did it off my own back. Is that ok,?'

Yammy

Math as a plural for maths

That’s not mispronunciation surely, it is just the American usage. I realise there’s massive anti American feeling in GN. Ut still….

Lucca Thu 24-Jun-21 12:34:12

Damn. But still

NannanTo4 Thu 24-Jun-21 12:42:12

Boris and Hancock using ‘t’instead of to.
Drives me up t’wall

I absolutely hate the Americanisation ‘normalcy’ for normality.

Me too!

Bromley Thu 24-Jun-21 12:46:28

EXcept instead of ACCept.

It should be "off my own bat" but people don't understand the cricket analogy so say "back" instead of "bat".

BJ drives me crazy when he says ter instead of to. He does it all the time and we are supposed to believe he is educated. Good post and I have got this one off my chest.

OldHag Thu 24-Jun-21 12:53:16

Sorry, haven't had time to read the full thread, but simply had to add my pet hates which are - angular instead of Anglia and
it never ceases to amaze me how many policemen on TV say burgalry instead of burglary.

Lin663 Thu 24-Jun-21 13:04:10

Draw for Drawer, Northern Island for Northern Ireland, Might of for Might have …and anything that comes out of Priti Patel’s gob e.g. Somethin’, runnin’, speakin’ etc …I shout at the telly every time she’s on, she drives me nuts

lexigran Thu 24-Jun-21 13:05:43

The one that drives me mad is congradulations for congratulations , also acrosst when it should be across!

Sloegin Thu 24-Jun-21 13:07:36

'rs' not 'rrs'! That's Devon me dear!

My brain is addled today- even more th usual! I meant one 'r' of course!!! I think it must be all you English folk not pronouncing 'pattern' properly ( to my ears) that has me over emphasising the 'rs'! ?

Chameleon007 Thu 24-Jun-21 13:08:26

'free' instead of three (3).

And when did Kenya get pronounced Kenya? In my day it was pronounced "Keenya".

Since it became independent.

graykat Thu 24-Jun-21 13:12:48

On property programmes, ménage instead of manège. As a French teacher I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

tictacnana Thu 24-Jun-21 13:14:06

Wait for weight as in “Trying to lose wait.” Also, when people think it’s upper class to say kinema ( not using the sibilant c sound in cinema) and saying think instead of thing in the word something.

FarNorth Thu 24-Jun-21 13:23:05

sloe gin yup, 'r' should definitely be pronounced in pattern, but sometimes it moves around a bit and becomes pattren.

kevincharley Thu 24-Jun-21 13:23:17

Textses foe texts. All my other issues have already been mentioned.
Apart from one my husband uses. He will insist on calling the car windscreen the windowscreen. Arrrgh!

FannyCornforth Thu 24-Jun-21 13:23:58

tictac how should weight be pronounced, if not 'wait'?

FarNorth Thu 24-Jun-21 13:28:08

It does drive me nuts when people say lock for loch.
If they can't say the 'ch' sound, why not use a 'h' - so law+h - rather than a loudly articulated 'ck'?

kevincharley Thu 24-Jun-21 13:28:18

Just remembered another. When something is going faster than usual and, instead of saying 19 to the dozen, they say 10 to the dozen, which is slower.
