A survey has revealed the most irritating mispronounced words:

Lexisgranny

‘Ter” instead of “to”; “garridge” instead of “garage” and “winder” instead of “window” all set my teeth on edge.

But they are simply regional differences.
They may set your teeth on edge, but they are not incorrect.

^Extorionate rather than Exorbitant turns me into Mrs Banner.^

Gosh, I've never come across that one, it sounds absurd confused

Oh sorry, I've only just realised you meant extortionate - I don't know why I couldn't see that before blush

“garridge” instead of “garage”

Some of this is not mispronunciation but local accents.

Ok - barth instead of bath. There is no 'r' in the word.
Marster and Commarnder instead of Master and Commander with a short 'a'.

Callistemon Wed 23-Jun-21 19:44:50

And, if we are mentioning Commander, it annoys me to hear the American pronunciation of Lieutenant as Lootenant.

FannyCornforth Wed 23-Jun-21 19:45:57

Who is Mrs Banner?

JackyB Wed 23-Jun-21 19:50:07

Has anybody mention "crate" for create yet?

I remember once flying over to visit my mum and she was complaining that no one can pronounce "create" any more practically before I even got in the door.

(When I told this to a wisecrack friend once, he said that if she'd asked me how my flight was, I should have answered "Fine, but the plane was a cree-ate")

Standard English/Received Pronunciation is the same all over the country. Local accents don’t come into it.

It’s more bahth than barth. Some people would pronounce the r!

My husband cannot say defibrillator. It always comes out as defiblerator. It's become a family joke.

Grandma70s Wed 23-Jun-21 20:56:49

By ‘all over the country’ I mean England. Scotland, Ireland and Wales are different countries and have their own accepted pronunciations.

You really think everyone in England should aspire to RP?

Even if you do think that, GN is for more than England so it's quite rude to claim that non-RP is wrong.

You're right on that one.
As a Scot, I think it's totally weird to put an 'r' into a word expecting that no 'r' is to be said.

burgULry/burglary
harASS/harass

I did have elocution lessons at school but I don't think the word garage was mentioned at all.
Cows and brown etc

Re Mrs Banner - is it something to do with the Incredible Hulk, aka Bruce Banner? confused

grandMattie Thu 24-Jun-21 05:46:53

When I first cam to England, a boyfriend persuaded me that cabbage was pronounced the same way as garage - cub-bah-je/ga-rah-je…. ?
I can’t stand draw instead of drawer; lie-bry instead of library…

FannyCornforth Thu 24-Jun-21 05:50:59

GrandMattie I love that cabb - ahje!

I admit that I probably say draw instead of drawer.
If I say draw- er it sounds daft...confused

I didn’t say that. I’m talking facts. RP is the same all over England.

Fanny I fink she’s probaly a joggraphy teacher who doesn’t have a garridge for her mo-or.

One night she she decided to have a bahrth before bed. She went to drawer the curtains and noticed a bad smell coming from the bahrthroom. To her surprise, she opened the draw and found the cabb-ahje she’d bought last week. It was the sickth day it had been missing and she’d ashumed she left it in the shop. ?

FannyCornforth Thu 24-Jun-21 06:49:23

Thank you Grannynannywanny
It all makes perfect sense now. ?

Can someone now please explain from where, or whom, one can receive Received Pronounciation?
It may come in handy

Esspee Thu 24-Jun-21 07:53:55

I am so glad Kate1949 that I am not alone in been driven mad by the recent trend of pronouncing assume as ashume.
I always want to ask how these people pronounce assumption.

Scribbles Thu 24-Jun-21 08:25:53

Joolery instead of jewellery

Axed instead of asked

-in' instead of -ing at the end of a word. Priti Patel, I'm lookin' at you ?.

FarNorth Thu 24-Jun-21 08:28:32

Fanny Cornforth RP has been delivered from on high directly to our gracious Queen.
The best thing you can do is listen to at least one Royal speech per day and practise constantly.
