A pedant on Facebook - moi?

I love this topic.

I've been tempted to post a comment on my village's Fb page along the lines of...

"I'm thinking of starting a Fb group for those who can string together a short sentence with no spelling mistakes and which is grammatically correct. I look forward to hearing from both of you".

Maybe I should of grin

I suspect fellow pedants also have to sit on their hands and zip their lips when it comes to social media.

Me too, at comprehensive.

I have always objected to "dead nice".

I hate the spoken 'offen' instead of often
And I have 'o' level english lang and lit.
Loved them both

I see it that some people are good at maths - it makes logical, measurable sense to them.

Some are good with languages.

I've never seen anyone pedantic about fractions. (Yet!)

I'm ancient enough to have sat "O" levels in both English Language and English Literature - considered as two totally subjects back in those good old days. Those times where the teachers came to morning assembly wearing their cap and gown.

We had a very scary, very large English Language teacher. If you can imagine the "face that launched a thousand ships" - hers was the polar opposite. We dreaded her - and as luck would have it I managed to be in her class probably 5 out of the 7 years I was there. But my goodness did she teach grammar. Hours and hours of breaking down sentences - subject, object, predicate etc. And I shall take to my grave -

A preposition is something you should never end a sentence WITH.

Passed down to my daughter who is probably more pedantic than I am ( or should that just be "I"?) wink

As Winston Churchill once put it AFAIK, ‘This is something up with which I will not put.’ 😂

I do try to get my spelling and punctuation correct but perhaps some pedants think more about those things rather than the contents

I think poor spelling/grammar shows a lack of respect for one's language. Most Brits only speak one language but many seem to find it a challenge. I do know there are difficulties such as dyslexia for some.
An acquaintance once remarked " I'm hopeless at spelling but it doesn't matter now that we have spellcheckers."
I don't mind being corrected if I make mistakes.

MissAdventure Thu 04-Apr-24 19:14:34

Poor grammar and spelling on here just shows that private schooling ain't all it's cracked up to be, in some cases.

I don't think pendants specifically look for mistakes, I think the mistakes just jump out at them.
For me it's 'less' and 'fewer'. And when I hear 'less' used instead of 'fewer", I shout 'fewer' at the TV.

MissAdventure Thu 04-Apr-24 19:24:50

Mistakes like "pendant", do you mean?

Sorry, just joking, not seriously correcting.

Actually, that should read...

....Those times WHEN

Hoisted myself on my own petard there

And (whisper) it's hoist with one's own petard not " hoisted"
Hoist with his own petard" is a phrase from a speech in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet that has become proverbial. The phrase's meaning is that a bomb-maker is blown ("hoist", the past tense of "hoise") off the ground by his own bomb ("petard"), and indicates an ironic reversal or poetic justice

Well, I thought it was to do with flags! blush

Never too old to learn.

‘Offen’ is perfectly acceptable. In fact until relatively recently ‘otTen’ was considered wrong. Now, both pronunciations are listed as correct.

The late Queen pronounced it ‘awffen’, like orphan. She certainly didn’t pronounce the T.

I’m afraid my view of humanity has gone down since I started using social media and the internet generally. Loose, reign, youse, could of, would of. Who knew all this was lurking beneath the surface?
I can’t talk as I’m a dunce with figures, but still…

JamesandJon33 Fri 05-Apr-24 06:14:20

English lit and language here too.
I dislike gotten, off of, youse, my bad, could have, would have, and many more I would think . …can I get, cool, like( sprinkled throughout a sentence) , f—k used as an adjective, , babe, hubby. ….I’ll stop now.

nanna8 Fri 05-Apr-24 06:24:55

Sometimes it is because of the automatic corrections by tablets and iPhones. I don’t always bother to correct them once they are published. It doesn’t really bother me even though I used to teach Eng lit at one stage. I’ve seen it all with bells on. 🔔

vegansrock Fri 05-Apr-24 06:54:12

There’s a radio ad, which presumably has been put together by a commercial company, which states “..three items or less “. I can’t remember what the ad is about, but I cringe whenI hear it.

Juliet27 Fri 05-Apr-24 06:57:02

I noticed a thread yesterday about a dog about to be spRayed!

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 05-Apr-24 08:55:16

I noticed that too. The word was used twice so probably not a typo. I was itching to correct the poster - but didn’t.

What is wrong with 'could have' and 'would have'?

This has to be one of the more odd pedants threads when the OP says 'should of' (😱 ) in their first post and isn't too sure about the use of 'I' and 'me' in a subsequent one...

MissAdventure Fri 05-Apr-24 09:25:55

Could have, and would have is correct, surely?

Witzend Fri 05-Apr-24 09:27:27

True, Chardy - I don’t look for them - they scream at me from the page!

I’ve seen several ‘ects’ already today - (etc.) and a ‘loose’ instead of ‘lose’.

Witzend Fri 05-Apr-24 09:30:41

MaizieD, judging from the emoji, the OP’s ‘should of’ was a joke.

Same here!!

It's true, misspellings and rogue apostrophes just jump out of the page toward me.
The other thing which annoys me is the use of 'myself' e.g if you need further information please ring myself. Seems to be a fairly recent thing.
