Looking for a longmore?

Well, I know we've had threads on here before about mis-spelled words and bad grammar, etc - but I've just come across a real cracker today. On our local residents' group on Facebook, a woman was asking if anyone had a Longmore she could borrow. I was baffled as to what a Longmore was, until she replied to another comment that she wanted to cut her grass! grin

I know none of us are perfect but surely to goodness people should know it's Drawers and not Draws .. and why oh why do people describe a set of drawers.. as a Chester ?.. .. it's a Chest of Drawers... not a Chester Draws. ! sigh

i don't think it's wise to show your picture on here; could be stalkers out there.

I’ve tried, but can’t imagine a dialect in which ‘lawnmower’ becomes ‘longmore’.

Try Belfast.

Spot on kircubbin

*LucyAnn2*. That was not a spelling mistake but a slip of the finger. I must cut my nails

I hope you didn’t take offence - I was only jesting smile

It was probably autocorrect or predictive text.

How can anyone in Belfast be so utterly stupid as to spell ‘lawnmower’ as ‘longmore’? Just how?

Lots of people everywhere can't spell but it's the pronunciation that has led her to spell it this way.

I saw an advert yesterday for a six BIRTH CARAVAN. No thank you I’ll stick with the three births I had. I did laugh though as it looked like a lovely caravan.

A firm called Longmoors sells lawnmowers ......

"Welcome To Longmoors"

"Welcome to Longmoors, farm and garden machinery specialists in Kingswood Buckinghamshire."

I said long ore to DH. He knew immediately what that was

Love Longmore, one of the best yet. 😁

Perhaps she's a tad deaf?

I've seen some appalling grammatical errors and spelling mistakes on our local FB page and wondered how these younger people managed to get through the local school system (I do recognise some names so know where they went). The English Department was good when my DC were there.

Any spelling mistakes I make are due to autocorrect having a mind of its own or my stubby stylus 😁

Very difficult to get lawnmower out of that. Maybe English is not her first language.

My first thought too, marmadoit.

No, not the case here. My daughter knows the woman and she is local, they went to the same school.

Dialects of English are still English. I was thinking of a language utterly different from English, say an African one or an East Asian one.

I look at my local Freecycle daily and today there was a Chester draw for free. Was it football Chester was playing?

DH just had an online ‘chat’ with a utility company. The operator asked him to ‘ bare with her’. When he asked how much he was expected to bare, she had no idea what he ment.

The trouble with being amused by others’ spelling mistakes is that you have to be extra careful not to make any yourself….
(*meant*)

That’s light hearted, by the way. I don’t care about spellings and I certainly wouldn’t want to mock anyone’s attempts at language.
