Prince William’s speech

I realise that pedantry is not important compared to the subject of Prince William’s speech yesterday on Holocaust Memorial Day.

However, he said something about it being a “great honour for Catherine and I” - should be “for Catherine and me”. He also pronounced “deteriorate” as “deteriate”. This is a very common mistake, but I would expect better English from the heir to the throne, who represents us on the world stage. So much for an Eton education.

Or "between you and myself". "Myself" seems to have taken over from "me". How often do you hear "Myself and someone else will do this or that"?

I agree absolutely.

No other comments are necessary, it is the message which is important on such an emotional day.

I’m a dyed in the wool pedant Aldom, but there are limits to the nits I pick.

I agree.

I think this thread is inappropriate.

I don't agree that this thread is inappropriate, a ban on the tiniest little critical comment about a powerful figure is rather chilling

I think I said earlier, the grammar is incorrect, but the content was heartfelt. That's what actually matters.

Moving on, another royal today announcing the birth of Princess Beatrice's second child, also gets it wrong:
^A massive thank you from my wife and I goes out to all the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital".
Not Eton educated, but The Dragon School! Nit that it matters.

If we're going to be honest, can we just accept that most, if not all the Royal family, do not have the highest level of intelligence . And that is not a criticism; just an observation.

Indeed.

People can comment, politely, on grammar.

chilling - daft comment. It's not a ban being proposed, it is whether, in this particular instance, it is an appropriate topic for criticism.

Honestly, you would think a grammatical error was more important than a message about the Holocaust.

Some people's priorities must be skewed.

Well, if you think a tiny grammatical error is more important than the message perhaps have missed the message or think it is of no consequence.

Sometimes I read some posts and despair.

Likewise. I despair some posts also.

Sometimes I wonder why posters can't accept other mortals tiny failures. I didn't read any post saying the message was of no consequence.

Perhaps I'm the grumpy one, Norah, but after watching coverage of the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz, the extremely moving speeches by survivors and others, which made me weep, seeing a nit-picking thread like this made me wonder what on earth these people would think of Gransnetters.

Allira Wed 29-Jan-25 22:55:08

It's not just me, I think most posters agree - it's nit-picking and content is important.

It causes talk about the grammar not the Holocaust

I think that most people can hold more than one idea in their heads during a given period of time.

I think it’s a bit sad that the thought police have to monitor a pedants’ discussion…

Anniebach Thu 30-Jan-25 09:47:45

But not speak one idea at a time

So most posters on this thread are the thought police?

They are just expressing a point of view which they are entitled to do.
Do you always agree with everything stated in an OP, MaizieD?
I thought not 😁

MaizieD Thu 30-Jan-25 10:36:57

So most posters on this thread are the thought police?

No. Allira. Just the posters telling the others that they should have only been thinking about the Holocaust or the message in William's speech.

The pedants aren't 'thought police' they are grammar nerds...

Anniebach Thu 30-Jan-25 10:39:12

If grammar nerds why mock an entire family ?

Galaxy Thu 30-Jan-25 10:39:56

Ah

Galaxy Thu 30-Jan-25 10:40:21

Ah I have a soft spot for nerds.

Allira Thu 30-Jan-25 10:41:02

I know exactly what you meant, Maizie.

Kate54 Thu 30-Jan-25 10:51:03

Content of the speech aside, the grammar was incorrect. I, like many others here, believe it does matter. My argument is always that a teacher teaching English to, for example, a German or French person, would try very hard to provide accurate information. I’ve done it and would never have said ‘it doesn’t matter, say what you like’!
The other reason I believe this stuff matters is that both my fairly successful careers have been based on being able to read, write and communicate clearly in the English language.
If none of it matters, what on earth was the point? Depressing to put it mildly!

I don't believe you were grumpy. You disagreed.

I'm not a grammar nerd, I'm more confused by grammar than most. The Nuns would be disappointed I didn't take on my lessons well. smile

Despite what you may think from my posts, I do think grammar is important and one of my DC is an English teacher.

However, in this instance I think the message was far more important and criticising the grammar detracts from that.
