Prince William’s speech

I realise that pedantry is not important compared to the subject of Prince William’s speech yesterday on Holocaust Memorial Day.

However, he said something about it being a “great honour for Catherine and I” - should be “for Catherine and me”. He also pronounced “deteriorate” as “deteriate”. This is a very common mistake, but I would expect better English from the heir to the throne, who represents us on the world stage. So much for an Eton education.

I understand the purpose of Pedants’ Corner perfectly. In this instance, picking up a grammatical error was distasteful and unnecessary.

Why was an entire family criticised ?

Some people pronounce house as hice.

That's the plural.

The me/I rule has slipped lately. The trick is to leave the other person out of the equation. You would not say , “ Give it to I “ would you ?
However educated, modern speech has changed and Prince William’s speech is typical .

I is the nominitive, me is the accusative. He (nominative) gives it to me (accusative). I (nominative) accept it from him (accusative). I try to get it right but don't worry too much if I realise I got it wrong, just try to do better the next time. It was learning Latin at skool wot taught me to speak proper grammar.
