Since when is ‘lotion’ a verb?

I hope I’m not the only grumpy old pedant to be irritated by a current TV ad (Dove?) telling us the product is for those areas ‘…that you don’t lotion every day’.
Grrrr!

Allira Sat 22-Mar-25 14:46:37

😀

Which areas are they, I wonder?

Silverbrooks Sat 22-Mar-25 15:15:02

Since at least 1777.

Aldom Sat 22-Mar-25 15:24:57

Well, Silverbrooks that is interesting. smile

Does one lotion with a potion?

JamesandJon33 Sat 22-Mar-25 15:47:02

And what is the motion, if you lotion with a potion.

Astitchintime Sat 22-Mar-25 15:49:42

Seemingly, this is causing somewhat of a commotion..........grin

Well, blow me down. Like Witzend I always thought it was just a noun that had to be applied. I think I need to tea.

AGAA4 Sat 22-Mar-25 16:06:25

I've never heard of the verb "to lotion".

Luckygirl3 Sat 22-Mar-25 16:30:02

There are lots of nouns that have become used as verbs in my lifetime.

I am OK with that - it is just language developing ...........

Now unnecessary apostrophes - that's a different thing altogether ....... smile

I like that Google has become a verb.

kircubbin2000 Sat 22-Mar-25 19:36:05

I don't lotion anything. I think it's one of the biggest cons in the beauty business!

Deedaa Sat 22-Mar-25 19:42:06

The one that always annoys me is "Medalling". You win a medal, you don't medal a medal!

Grammaretto Sat 22-Mar-25 19:50:14

A verbal noun?

Silverbrooks Sat 22-Mar-25 20:35:08

Medalled as a verb has also been around for a long time.

OED record its first used by William Thackeray (Vanity Fair) in his Cornhill Magazine in 1860.

Chocolatelovinggran Sun 23-Mar-25 08:50:26

I have a bee in my bonnet about the disappearance of the noun " invitation ", which has been subsumed by the verb "invite".
Pedant, moi?

Abitbarmy Sun 23-Mar-25 08:53:58

Gifted. That’s one that I find irritating.

Indigo8 Sun 23-Mar-25 09:00:10

It reminds me of the Dominic West adverts for Nationwide where he says 'Muffin me".

So do I. And I don’t really care if it was used by Shakespeare, or at any time in the last 1,000 years. It’s still an abomination 😆

It is very important to moisturise (lotion) one's legs to avoid leg ulcers.
That's medical advice.

Try Faith in Nature lavender and geranium body lotion.. it is absolutely delicious. I lotion arms and legs regularly

To "pencil" or "table" and my pet hate from the world of work "to leverage"

Aldom Sun 23-Mar-25 11:15:19

Thank you for the recommendation Pascal. On a daily basis I use CeraVe
but will treat myself to the lavender and geranium for 'going out'. smile

I tried CeraVe as it’s cheap as chips but it smells unpleasant and is a bit thick to rub in. The Vaseline range is good and only a pound dearer and a larger size.

The locomotion?😄
