Why do people call drawers 'draws'! Drives me nuts (among many other things)

Cabbie21 Fri 18-Jul-25 14:20:50

Are you thinking of a chester draws? lol

JdotJ Fri 18-Jul-25 14:23:59

Oh me too Aveline

And don't get me started on the (increasing) number of people who do not know the correct use of the words 'lose' or 'loose' within the structure of a sentence.

Lose - cannot find. Therefore lost.
Loose - not tight.

😊

One thing I notice more and more, is the apparent inability to make the plural of a word ending in ‘y’. So I keep seeing baby’s, family’s, party’s, and just the other day on MN, university’s!

Do schools not teach this any more? It’s not as if it’s very difficult. Or do some teachers think it doesn’t matter?

And while I’m on plurals, I also keep seeing box’s,
bus’s, even Christmas’s.

As in”Winter draws on…” being banned by the BBC.

I read about Chester draws for sale frequently, and it drives me crazy.

Also the apostrophe's!

midgey Fri 18-Jul-25 16:27:09

I read yesterday about some garden pots…..made of Terry Cotter!

grannyqueenie Fri 18-Jul-25 18:02:41

Midgey that’s definitely the best one yet!!

ViceVersa Fri 18-Jul-25 18:09:20

I think I've mentioned on here before, but apart from seeing the infamous 'chester draws' advertised for sale on the likes of Facebook Marketplace, the best one I saw was someone who was looking for a 'long more'.

Worse and worst annoys me. Also laying as opposed to lying.
He was laying on the sofa. How many eggs?

CountessFosco Fri 18-Jul-25 19:54:54

We lived in a town where they is a shop called BARGAIN'S [sic]. The sign was eventually repainted. We said thank goodness you have done away with the apostrophe. Blank expression from owner who said "lotsa people wan' it put back as they liked it". We gave up shock blush angry

Deedaa Fri 18-Jul-25 19:57:32

And then we have all the patriots talking about "Are country" where did "are" come from? It seems to be quite recent,

Georgesgran Fri 18-Jul-25 20:02:49

kircubbin there’s a tv advert for a mattress and the voice over say ‘the first time you lay on it …..!’ Make mine a dozen large ones, please!

mrswoo Fri 18-Jul-25 20:11:24

I saw an advert in the For Sale section of a local paper (when local papers still had such things) for
Anesta Tables

Obviously to be purchased along with the ‘Chester Draws’.

Unfortunately, my town Facebook group is called "R****h Resident's". I had to really grit my teeth when I joined it and every time it pops up with a post, I wince.

Our local one is the same. I actually messaged them pointing out the mistake and asking for them to change it - but that was several years ago and it's still the same.

Littleannie Sat 19-Jul-25 08:12:39

Don't forget the adverts for 4 birth caravans.

JoyBloggs Sat 19-Jul-25 09:01:36

One of my favourites is the ad. for a house for sale which has a large garden with several 'flowering boarders'. Male or female not specified.

Calendargirl Mon 28-Jul-25 13:22:46

Digressing, but on our local Facebook page, a message from our GP’s Medical Group, saying they have computer issues, no access to patients records, but asking us to ‘bare with them’.

I suppose the ‘bare’ is relevant though, in the great scheme of things, seeing as it’s medical!

pably15 Mon 28-Jul-25 13:30:09

kircubban, I like that one

Aldom Mon 28-Jul-25 13:43:24

Of instead of have....'I would of enjoyed that.'

Brought instead of bought....'I brought a new coat.'

JamesandJon33 Mon 28-Jul-25 15:35:09

She got off of her horse.
Seen in the market….Corjets 3 for a pownd

I agree about the plural thing Witzend I see it much more frequently now, so irritating.
Another frequent flyer is 'diffuse' and 'defuse' two different things.

I read a lot and another increasingly common irritant is description of old and doddery people in their sixties. All the sixty year olds I know are fit and active and of course still working due to the movement of pension age.
