My latest hate.

‘Use to’ is becoming common when written - ‘ I use to meet my friend on Fridays’ .

"Queue" or "que" more illiteracy. Their off of the scale these days. I'm sat here literally fuming.

their off of the scale
You couldn’t make it up especially on Pendants corner.

I hear "could of" on a good day and "could of went" on a bad one.

One of the Radio 2 presenters regularly says “arks” instead of “ask”. Drives me nuts!

There is nothing wrong in using arks it’s what call linguistics call metathesis
There are many articles on line explaining the use of this word.
I was educated in the use of it many years ago by black friends.

I agree Crossstitchfan it really irritates me too.
Another one which is cropping up lately is phased and fazed there is a different meaning.

Crossstitchfan Sat 22-Nov-25 21:24:19

I still hate the fact that people say, ‘it is what it is’. It really annoys me and must be one of the most pointless quotes of all time.

JPB123 Sat 22-Nov-25 21:12:21

‘Recognise’ and re c o n i s e.Sorry had to write it like that ,computer kept correcting!

Sparklefizz Sat 22-Nov-25 17:15:06

I always smile to myself when people say "If I'm honest ...." (are they usually not?) or "I can't lie ..." when presumably they would lie normally.

Allira Sat 22-Nov-25 11:56:48

Was she being honest as well, Sparklefizz?
"To be honest ....."

Sparklefizz Sat 22-Nov-25 10:56:40

I have been watching previous series of Traitors on tv - one contestant used "literally" every few words, and I lost count of "to be fair" being said
eg. "I literally think he is a traitor because he literally lied, but to be fair ......."

Aaaarrgh! She was aged 30 so literally (haha) not a teenager to be fair and in my opinion old enough to know better.

‘We’re excited to see you at 10 am on Thursday.’

A text from Specsavers about my appointment. Not sure ‘excited’ is the right word!

Nor have you turned up yet! 😁

Then there is the perennial 'less and fewer.' Apparently there is a supermarket in Cambridge with an aisle for 'fewer than 10 items.' I applaud Cambridge for getting it right.

bridie54 Sat 22-Nov-25 09:33:42

My annoying one is the BBC news, who regularly use the phrase 'revert back'.
You can't revert forward.

TheWeirdoAgain60 Sat 22-Nov-25 09:25:04

When ''little'' is shortened to ''lil'' like in those awful ''singers'' names...Lil Baby, etc.

And shortened words such as ''u'' ''r'', and so on instead of ''you'' ''are''.

''Muzak'' instead of ''music''

Various others. No wonder those from other countries who want to learn English are getting totally confused!

Esmay Sat 22-Nov-25 09:18:18

The other day I went to a local cafe and the teenager who served me had a problem understanding me .
I certainly had trouble understanding him .

Foreign born ?
No .
He was born in the UK and his parents are both English .
He's has adopted the latest newspeak to such an extent that he can't communicate .

My latest - reaching out. A reply which I received from an Energy Company when I had queried the bill began with
“ Thank you for reaching out to us……..” What’s wrong with
“contacting us.”?

Allira Fri 21-Nov-25 20:10:00

I've no hope! My autocorrect just changed groceries to groceries!

🤬 rockeries to groceries!!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 21-Nov-25 19:23:14

How many?? Hehe.

Crossstitchfan Fri 21-Nov-25 19:13:53

Also, must of went!

kircubbin2000 Sun 16-Nov-25 09:51:18

Our Education minister in NI says I had went! What hope for the children.

Bored OF something and something being described as quite/fairly unique are two of the expressions that really bug me angry

Kate1949 Sun 16-Nov-25 09:37:24

Noone on TV can say sixth. I've heard sick, six or even sith.
