Maurice, time to say goodbye

Another trip to the vet today, as although the biopsy showed it wasn't cancer, the lump was getting bigger and Maurice was looking unwell, and it has been decided that the best thing is for him to be put to sleep.

I'm so ashamed to say that I just couldn't face it on my own, (Mr P lives away during the week) but our vet assured me that it would be ok to wait a couple of days, and has prescribed an anti inflammatory/painkiller combination drug which should mean that he will be fine until Saturday morning, when Mr P and I will take him in.

I dread it, Maurice has been a damn good chap, a cat beyond rubies and in some ways a link to all things precious. I have a lovely framed photo of a 12 year old Jack with a 12 week old Maurice on the Pembroke table in the sitting room.

I have just given Maurice his medication, and of course sods law decrees that he is looking slightly better, although deep down I know that is just wishful thinking.

When I phoned Mr P at our usual time of 5.30, he asked if there was anything else that could be done (money no object!) but short of either another biopsy or removing the whole lymph gland to identify the cause, which the vet thinks might be TB, even if we did go down that route, which as Maurice is already unwell with the thyroid problem, confirming TB would be pointless, as there is no really effective treatment.

So, tomorrow I'm off to Waitrose to buy a small piece of Stilton, and a pack of their "Essentials" range of smoked salmon, we may only have Maurice until Saturday, but he's going to live like a king until then.

Hope today has started a better week for you, phoenix. You were with Maurice to the end and that would have given him so much comfort, bless the wee soul. flowers xx

Many thanks to all of you, your posts are so much appreciated.

Unfortunately, he did "not go gentle into that good night", the little sod played up, which was not like him, Mr P and I drove to the vets, but Mr P just couldn't come in with me, so it was just me and Maurice.

Anyway, it is done, although I would have given almost anything to change things, it was the right thing to do.

Even though it is raining here, Mr P has been out and done the necessary, so rest well, my Maurisovitch, you were such a special cat, and will be forever loved and remembered.

I agree with what everybody has said previously, it is the kindest thing that we can do for our pets. It is a horrid weekend for Mr.P, he is trying to stay strong for you. Again, hugs for both of you and please give Digby a hug from me because he will also know what is going on. flowers

Send you and Mr P some (((hugs))) Phoenix. You're doing the most loving thing we can do for our much loved pets when they reach the end of their lives flowers

Hope you are coping Phoenix and that Maurice went to sleep gently. It's the silly things like seeing their empty dish that breaks you up. We all understand how hard it has been and hope that knowing that you did what was right helps a bit. sunshine for the days to come.

Phoenix and MrP Don't suppose you'll be on here until much later on, but just in case - wishing you the gentlest of goodbyes to Maurice flowers

Hi phoenix - thinking about you and Mrp this morning and sending you love! sad

merlotgran Fri 18-Jul-14 22:58:03

The night before is awful, phoenix Nothing anyone says will make you feel better. sad but as jingl says, You are doing the right thing and that's what we do when we care so much about them.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 18-Jul-14 22:52:01

Oh dear. sad

You can't let the poor little thing suffer. You are doing the right, and the kindest, thing. Try to hold on to that thought.

Anne58 Fri 18-Jul-14 22:38:53

Oh hell, I'm suddenly feeling the clock ticking.

Mr P is home, and being not his usual self, talking about everything except Maurice. Getting a bit cross with me about some minor thing.

I've given what will be the last medicine dose (sort of hidden in the smoked salmon) to Maurice. Mr P made no comment.

Cancel that, in the last few minutes Mr P has, well, I don't want to go into detail. sad

Deedaa Fri 18-Jul-14 21:41:30

phoenix one our cats was a nice little thing who enjoyed sitting with us in the evenings but would never actually sit ON you. A couple of weeks before we found the untreatable tumour in her mouth she suddenly turned into a lap cat. I'm sure she must have realised that something was very wrong and that we were the only people who could do anything about it.

I'll be thinking of you in the morning.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 18-Jul-14 19:12:30

Anne58 Fri 18-Jul-14 17:15:43
