Lost cat

I'm horribly upset, I may even be harbouring slightly unreasonable feelings towards DH's sister.

As some of you may know I'm in the middle of a three month trip. I had arranged for my cat to go into a very swish, well run Cattery for the duration. No one in DH's family would ever countenance paying for boarding a pet, they've only ever had cats and another family member takes over the feeding while the owner is away.

Anyhow DH "let slip" the cost of boarding to his sister who was shocked and annoyed that I hadn't asked her to have Molly. SIL insisted that she would look after my cat along with her own, my objections (her cat is a kitten mine is 12 years old and timid) were dismissed. DH saw no reason why not and against all my instincts I eventually agreed as it was a kind offer, well meant.

I've just been told that three weeks ago my poor wee cat escaped from SIL's house and hasn't been seen since. I had stressed the importance of ensuring that she be kept indoors at least until she was settled and happy and I do feel that my SIL's attitude was a little cavalier. Having said that she is very upset and has made efforts to find Molly including going to my house 12 miles from hers and asking my neighbours to look out for her.

I'm distraught at the thought of Molly being hungry or hurt. I know cats will try to get home but she's elderly and has never been a hunter.

I'm expressing my feelings here as I can't say too much to DH as he now feels guilty for persuading me against my better judgement to leave Molly with his sister.

He feels sad too, he isn't heartless but she's really my cat.

lovely news - so pleased for you - and your cat.

So glad to hear she's back Baubles DD's cat disappeared for 6 weeks about 6 years ago. When she came back she was like a little skeleton and had obviously been shut in somewhere. She's not strayed since!

I do love a happy ending!smile
Our cat [who hardly went out and was old] vanished one day and a month later was found living in a cottage about a mile away. They always seem to land on their feet don't they? Some cats have a great 'home locator' in their heads and some have none at all and soon lose their bearings.

When we were little, a stray cat came to stay but eventually disappeared again. Months later, when my mum was out with the pram, containing baby sister, she recognised the cat on the other side of the road and called to him. He walked home with her and stayed for the rest of his long life. He knew when he was well off!

Good news, Baubles. Cats are so good at looking out for themselves.

Tegan Tue 22-Jul-14 11:46:52

Fantastic news. Aren't they strange little beings, cats. If only she could talk. Perhaps she tootled back to your house and thought, 'darn it, there's no one home, better go back to the hotel'.

annodomini Tue 22-Jul-14 11:12:27

Baubles, I am so relieved for you and Molly. Enjoy the rest of your epic trip. smile

A happy ending

Baubles that is good news. We used to take our cat to relatives when we went on holiday and he was really good at knowing where he was and coming back to that place very quickly.

whenim64 Tue 22-Jul-14 08:04:58

Thank goodness for that, Baubles. Huge sighs of relief all round smile

Delighted to report that Molly turned up safely at SIL's house. She is apparently looking thinner but otherwise ok.

I dare say she will be the most pampered cat on the planet now. smile

Sorry for delay in replying, the internet connection here is not so good.

I can't actually remember if she's chipped, we got her from a cat rescue centre so she may be but I'm not sure.

I've posted on Facebook and SIL registered her as missing.

I'm trying to stay positive and hopeful that she will turn up unharmed.

annodomini Thu 17-Jul-14 23:33:54

Poor you, Baubles, so far away and feeling sad and frustrated. Cats do reappear after quite long periods. My son's partner's cat was missing for five weeks when she was not much more than a kitten. They put out flyers all over town and finally someone rang to say she was in their garden -about 1km away. Relief all round. Is Mollie chipped?

moomin Thu 17-Jul-14 22:46:13

Baubles - hope she is found safe and well very very soon

After going through this nearly 2 years ago, I know just how you`re feeling Baubles. I do hope that Molly is soon safely back where she belongs.

Aka Thu 17-Jul-14 21:51:07

Hope she turns up. We had an elderly one went missing for 7 weeks. Turned up fit and well, just strolled in one day and demanded to be fed asked for her dinner.

Do try local medal, leafleting and Facebook

Nanabelle Thu 17-Jul-14 21:37:42

I would agree with the local radio request. My two cats went missing when only 5 months old while a neighbour was feeding them for us while we were on holiday. They had both found new homes but neither of the people in these homes had contacted the Cats Protection etc. They just took them in and fed them. I was so lucky to knock on the right door the other side of the park from our house. Another time one of these two went missing again and I put out a message on local radio, and got a response the next day! She was only up the road, but lost in some allotments!
Good luck and I do hope you are reunited. We all love our cats so much and hate to think of them lost.

I once looked after my friend's 2 cats while she and her husband went to Tunisia. (They had been kittens we had bred so they weren't complete strangers) After a couple of days one of them got out and disappeared. Suffice it to say that, after various adventures, including one idiot catching her and taking her collar off to read the address - whereupon she vanished again, we did get her back. When our friend arrived to pick them up the first thing she said was "Have you found the cat?" Apparently her husband had had the local paper sent out to Tunisia and he'd seen the Lost Cat advert I'd put in!!!

We had a cat go missing once when we moved. He had never been a hunter but managed to survive for three months until one of our old neighbours caught him.
