A neighbour and I were looking on the Cat's Protection site(s) for the area, and among the Jets', Poppy's, Whisky's, Gizmo's,Joey's etc there was a "Sprout"
I don't think it would be top of my list when thinking of names!
Mr P and I did once think that if we ever got 2 kittens, they would be called Hamish & Dougall (from "I'm sorry I haven't a clue") but the kittens my neighbour is currently trying to persuade me to take on are called Gerald and Frank (doesn't suit them at all, if I had them which I won't they would be Kevin and Eric.
Numberplease our best ever dog was called Pepper- because he was a collie cross and the vet said he was 'salt and pepper'- found on the East Leics streets early September, probably left to his own devices when people went on holiday. He'd been run over and was limping badly, about 3 years old- and we had him for 17 years- fit as a fiddle almost to the end- he was a wonderful addition to our family and so loved.
Sadly, Granjura, we didn`t have Pepper very long, he got run over a few months after we took him in, miss him a lot, even now. We have another rescue cat, a white one, we decided to keep the name she came with, which is Mia.
I know of a cat called 'Ceefer' as in 'C' for cat. A male friend inherited a cat with a rented cottage many years ago, and had the nightly humiliation of calling out the back door every night to get him in....'Hello Sailor, come home'. my black and white cat was called Tyson when rescued but we thought that a nasty common name so call him Felix, most original, but very appropriate for him personality wise.
I do like your suggestion of Voltan, Slayer of a Thousand Voles phoenix Sadly my dear Titus who died many years ago would probably have been Insectus, Catcher of Six Beetles (But he was very proud of them!)
Friends of ours used to muse that if they had a cat they would call it "Ceremony" - so that they could indulge in the double-entendre instruction not to stand on ceremony.
My dad now has dementia. He has had two cats recently and has called them both "Sue". I really think it's the illness that he forgets it's a different cat or maybe using the same name is useful for him so that he won't forget it. As long as he still knows who I am for the time being.
We have acquired a beautiful cat with mushroom coloured marking called Malcom. He was found straying around a mushroom farm! Daughter doesn't like hhis name and called his mushroom. I called him toadstool when he gets on the kitchen worktop.
We`ve had many cats over the years and give them good appropriate names when they arrive. Unfortunately these always seem to mutate over time despite our best intentions. eg Tom became "Tam the bam" (because he wasn't daft at all- a born middle aged chap), Angus became "Fuffyboy"- mostly to annoy him. Our most recent addition was named Basil but as he grew into such a colossal cat we had to change it to "Big Basil"! Our small cat has mutated from "Minnie" to "Miniscule" as she`s so tiny especially compared to Baz. We end up just calling out a generic "puss puss" and hope for the best. Quite often other cats turn up too if we call that out! I just like cats and they seem to like me which is great. DGS pointed out that when I`m visiting them various cats seem to appear at their doors and windows and I naturally have to go and have a wee word with them. SIL not happy though. Tough!
Most cats and dogs have human names now. I like the Reggies, Colins, Nigels, Georges etc. Never let a small child name an animal, that's how you end up with Finger, Baji or Coal Bunker or, oh horrors! Scamp or Scruff.
