My other cat is howlng as I type! after having taken Rosie(the other cat to the vets) :(

My heart goes out to you Bikergran, how sad for you and your poor Timid puss. It's early days and things will be very hard for you and your little feline friend. Be kind to yourself and take one day at a time. ((((((Hugs)))))

I changed my mind about not getting another cat after losing my beloved 18 year old cat, and now the proud slave to the naughtiest cat in Britain.

I`m so sorry for your loss Biker. We lost our beautiful Bonnie in 1998, and right up to us finally getting another cat in 2012, I often had the feeling that she was lying across the back of the settee behind me, her favourite place. I used to turn around, and reach out, expecting her to be there to be stroked. I hope that your poor little Timid soon settles down again.

jings yes she is a bit of a naughty cat her own little character, they were both from a rescue place so at least they have had a good life in the garden and inside take care all.

vamp Timid is sat quiet (at the mo) she has done this crying thing for a while now.. but last night it was different, apparently the crying and meowing is one of the signs of the hyperthyroidism amongst other things. But I think last night she was looking for Rosie!
it makes it harder as when we were sat in the vets Rosie was very distressed at being in the cage, she kept putting both her arms n paws out and grabbing my hand towards the cage, and when we left her on the vets table (the vet was lovely she was stroking and talking to Rosie) but as DD and I opened the door to leave. She shot round and just looked at us with her big eyes. Almost to say "where you going! why am I not coming"! how do little (and big) furry creatures cause us so much pain. I sat and read a few forums last night and on one there were stories of how other peoples cats had died right in front of them! giving loud screaming meows! young cats, old cats, it was so sad reading them and it at least made me feel that I had taken Rosie and put her out of her misery sooner rather than later before she became too ill and in pain...if only our little animals could talk! (whoever was in charge up there forgot that bit didn't they)! good luck all with all your furry friends big or small..

Oh dear. She is really missing her little friend isn't she. Not that she sounds a very good friend! She's a naughty little thing! We do get to love our cats, don't we. Hope you both feel better again soon.

I do understand about vet fees biker, and it is expensive to keep a cat on long term medication. I hope poor Timid won't be leaving you just yet though. You've had such a hard time lately

by the way her name Timid is very deceiving! she is a wild cat/part ferule im sure, she lets you stroke her so many times then! turns around on you! she hates being handled or picked up, she wont let you groom her, and she goes off and doesn't bother with anyone, poor Rosie always got the brunt of her temper, and it was sad to see her "hitting" Rosie across her face on her sore mouth when the food was being put out, I think Timid thought Rosie was going to steal her food, it got that I had to feed Timid outside. also Rosie used to come to bed and sit at the top of the stairs, it was a few weeks when ago I found out that Timid was perching herself halfway up the stairs and she wouldn't let Rosie come past and sit in her fav place! it was quite upsetting when I realised what she was doing, especially with Rosie being poorly, I couldn't lock Timid her in another room as our house is open plan, so she is a very domineering cat and very feisty!

thankyou all for your kind words, Timid did settle down but then woke me up holwling and crying at 2-30 she is wandering round the house now mieowing.

nightowl the vet hasn't had a look at Timid as yet, she is just going off the symptoms I described to her, she has been acting odd for some time now and has always drunk a lot of water, always groomed herself that much that she constantly throws hairballs up, she is sort of part ferile cat and nothing like Rosie who was soft and gentle, Timid has been urinating in the house for a time now, ended up having to put litter tray back in house, sometimes she does it on the carpet and when I have been wiping it up it has been discoloured but didn't think too much of it, but recently I have found a few patches and they were darkish brown n blood stained, the vet said it has prob reached her kidneys, she of course is almost 13. I don't want to prolong things and keep her until she gets really poorly, I have applied to the PDSA for help with Rosie, but they only help with one cat in the household, the vets have been very understanding.They have both had a happy and contented life, they have never! had to go to the vets in their life!

Ruby I really don't want any other animals, things are very different now that DH is no longer here, for all sorts of reasons, finance,emotional,sadness and the thought of having to care for another animal and the end result, I cannot bare, also I will be having to go and find a job soon so I don't want any animal to be dependant on me, I don't want the worry any more.I know that may sound selfish but I just cant take any more on board now, thanks again all.

My sympathies, Biker. You have had a hard time lately. My ginger cat,Sandy, had an overactive thyroid which had to be treated with tablets. He was also blind but survived like this for several years and was the most lovable, purry, affectionate cat imaginable. Eventually, he got pneumonia and I had to say goodbye. 18 years later, I still miss him and my black cat, Sam, who predeceased him by just a few months.

Oh Biker how sad for you I have only just caught up on the threads I know how you feel after loosing barney last year but at least we had the comfort of him dying peacefully at home in his basket.Timid will be missing her sister surely but will get better over the next few days I'm sure she may even take to cuddling up to you for some extra tlc,I hope she does well at the vets.I do love having a cat around the house but with us being 1st floor it is not an option at the minute at least Poppy can cross her legs and wait for me to take her downstairs.

I'm sure your poor cat is grieving for her sister biker but it does sound as though she has a bad case of hyperthyroidism as well. I'm wondering why, if the vet thinks it's that, he or she isn't treating your poor girl for it? I had an old boy with hyperthyroidism who did really well on medication for a few years, and he was so much happier when the ravenous hunger was under control. I think it must be a truly miserable condition for a cat when they have no idea why they feel so awful, but it certainly doesn't need to be a death sentence.

Animals definitely can grieve for each other

That is sad, and I know how you feel biker. We had sister kittens from birth, and they lived into their twenties, Coco just disappeared - we never discovered what happened to her, she went a bit deaf and was a stupid cat, and her sister, who had never meowed in her life, suddenly started doing just that, talking to us all the time. She was very sad and lonely, after about a year we had to take her to be put to sleep because she seemed to become sadder with each day - and of course she was old. We decided against any more pets, they are a responsibility which we felt we no longer wanted.

As my two rescue cats, Belle and Tinka race around playing hide and seek it's hard to think that it's only two weeks since we brought them home from the rescue centre. They follow me around like pet lambs and have brought so much love with them. Even DH has fallen for them hook line and sinker and he always says he's not a cat lover (but he is really!)

I so understand how you are missing your little Rosie, biker. She had reached the end of her time and you did what had to be done but you will always miss her. There are older cats in rescue centres who need a kind home for their latter years and in time perhaps you could consider looking at one of those? Often their owners have gone into a care home or died and their little friend ends up sad and lonely in a rescue centre. Might be worth a thought.

How very sad bikergran. It's always so hard to say goodbye. I transported my three surviving cats (siblings) to New Zealand when I emigrated nearly two years ago in spite of their advanced ages. They took to life here with renewed vigour but, at the age of 17, Dingbat died last Easter. Both the girls (old ladies, more like) missed him to begin with, but Frutiger, the runt of the litter, still sometimes looks for him in the places where he used to lurk and calls out to him. It's not really surprising as cats have long memories and yours, like mine, had never been separated. Little independent Timid, like my feisty Frutiger, is sharing your grief at the loss of your lovely friend. I know just how you both feel.

Aw, I really feel for you biker. And for your beautiful cats Rosie and Timid. They are and have been such lucky cats to have had you as their mummy to care, look after them and to love. I am sure that Rosie gave you such comfort while your husband was ill and when he died, it is amazing how much they take the edge off the sadness we feel at times.

But you did do the best thing for your Rosie, she sounds like she was trying to tell you that the time was right for her to go. Your Timid will miss her as I am sure other animals miss others should they suddenly not be in the home anymore. My DD said once that dogs don't have feelings. Well, I certainly beg (no pun) to differ. My little doggie does have feelings, knows when I am upset or happy and picks up on it instantly and acts accordingly. But she has down days too or happy days, lots of cuddles or playing with toys needed.

Can I ask why you wouldn't get another pet? It took me a very long time to get another dog after my Heinz 57 died, she was my first after getting married, 3 days into the marriage and lasted 14 years. She was gorgeous and I still feel guilty that my ex husband took her to the vets that last time and I couldn't. I honestly thought he would bring her back but she was barking inside and outside so she didn't know where she was in the end. Thoroughly heartbreaking though.

I do hope that Timid calms down for the night but she might be off for a few days but I hope that you get some sleep. Night night love. Xxx

thankyou bags no deff wont be getting any more animals, they were my DD cats, but of course we ended up with them, the other cat sounds like she has stopped "shouting" for now,,I have just been reading that cats do! grieve if they have lost their little friends, poor thing if she is going through that as well as her illness.
