Poor little Minou

Early this Summer we noticed a young Siamese cross cat lurking around with a front leg hanging off. We were really upset, but he disapperared and we thought he had died. Then just before we went off to Italy - he re-appeared- the leg had fallen off and it looked awfuls and so sore. I fed him and watered him and made him a nice den in the garden shed- but he was very wild and scared and I couldn't get anywhere near him. Thank goodness my lovely neighbour agreed to look after him whilst we were away. I went to the vet and asked him what to do- and his reply was 'let nature take its course- cats can survive major injuries if they have shelter, food and water' so we did.

Lately he has been coming to the kitchen door to 'beg' first thing in morning and early evening- and I've been talking to him a lot- and recently he's got closer and closer. 3 days ago, I cooked him some fish, and, with head bent down and hand out stretched, sitting on kitchen doorstep - I put fish in my hand and waited. He made a lot of calling noises- but finally took the plunge and I felt him taking the food from my hand. Yesterday I was able to cuddle his head- and tonight - after his sachet of cat food, I did the same with fish in my hand- and he ended up on my lap and purring for the first time.

Very moving- I cried to be honest. Stump is still very red but seems to be granualting and tissue growing well around it. Hopefully he will be inside before really cold weather and snow comes- but neighbour and myself will be spending a few hours this week-end making a much warmer and waterproof den to put at the back of shed. And hopefully we will soon be able to catch it to take to the vet to see if anything can be done to help. Bless his little cotton paws.

Could you send him a video (or whatever you call it) from your phone so he has an idea of the extent of the injury?

granjura Sat 08-Oct-16 15:29:34

Another good idea. The thing is, the stump is granulating and ski over, although still looks very sore. An x-ray would show if there are sharp bits of bone at the end which will make it painful forever- or if it is 'clean' and smooth.

Will pop in to vets and have a chat again ans see what he says. x

I think Slinky told him to find you....

granjura Sat 08-Oct-16 15:39:45

ahhhhh maybe he did indeed ahhhhhhh

merlotgran Sat 08-Oct-16 16:03:53

Well done, granjura He's a lucky cat.

A new home and a fan club on Gransnet.

Grandura, that's lovely how you've cared for him.

granjura Sat 08-Oct-16 19:02:56

Kust had another cuddle - it's really cold out there and he wolfed his food down then took fish out of my hand. I've added anothe blanket on top of his den in the shed.

You're doing a wonderful job of caring for Minou. Thank goodness he found his way to your door.

Things are progressing well, and today he jumped on my lap again after his feed + getting bits of fish from my hand- and he purred his little heart out.

I'd got everything ready- 2 containers of cool boiled water and tissues, 1 for his runny eye, and one with Dettol for his paw. I first cleaned eye and he let me- then I wrapped gently his stump with the Dettol mix and held it there gently without rubbing- and again, he let me.

After a massive cuddle, I came into kitchen to sit at the table and back on computer- and he came and sat on the mat just inside- first time he has been through the door.

My neighbour is coming tomorrow to help me prepare a much better shelter for him in the shed - as it is getting very cold at night- but hopefully he will be inside soon. We are going away for 3 weeks mid-November, but hopefully he will be inside by then and our wonderful neighbour will take over till we get back. Such a cutie.

Wonderful, heartwarming post!

SueDonim Mon 10-Oct-16 13:42:03

This is such a beautiful, ongoing tale. I hope you have many happy years with Minou.

Jane10 Mon 10-Oct-16 13:56:15

Lovely! You'll not want to leave him in November! Poor wee puss. I do like a happy ending and it sounds like this is one for him.

Linsco56 Mon 10-Oct-16 13:58:54

Purrfect! You obviously have his trust now. He'll be indoors and living with you soon. Your patience and care has worked well.

granjura Mon 10-Oct-16 14:11:46

Another milestone- I am freezing here with my fleece on and a scarf- with the kitchen door half-opened and a bowl of eggie milk about 5 ft from the door- and he has come in- eating it as I write. Won't be long hopefully...

granjura Mon 10-Oct-16 14:18:13

Jane10- I will have a heavy heart leaving him in November. But hopefully by then he will be inside and my wonderful neighbour will take over until we get back. I trust her totally.

granjura Mon 10-Oct-16 18:46:51

Tonight I fed him just inside the kitchen door and he had not hesitation to come in- but was shy about being petted afterwards- so didn't try- tomorrow is another day.

A friend on FB put

'a lesson for the Donald, you need time and patience until a pussy comes to you- never grab one!' - well just had to laugh - indeed.

What a lovely story, hope we get updates.

Indinana Mon 10-Oct-16 19:35:40

I'm so pleased to see you are slowly gaining Minou's trust, granjura. Such a heartwarming story, and one that I'm sure we all hope will end well.

The name 'Minou' reminded me of this little nursery rhyme, which a French student who stayed with us many years ago used to sing to my two pre-school children:

Trois petits minous, petits minous, petits minous
Qui avaient perdu leurs mitaines
S'en vont trouver leur mère
Oh Maman, cher Maman, nous avons perdu nos mitaines
Perdu vos mitaines?
Vilains petits minous
Vous n'aurez pas de crème!

Trois petits minous, petits minous, petits minous,
Qui avaient retrouvé leurs mitaines
S'en vont trouver leur mère
Oh Maman, cher Maman nous avons retrouvé nos mitaines
Retrouvé vos mitaines?
Gentils petits minous
Vous aurez plein de crème!

Roughly equivalent to the English "Three Little Kittens", though the tune was not the same as the one I learned for the English version.

Granjura you are very kind. It's such a lovely moment when they start to trust you and make little steps to enter your world. The poor puss has been through so much.

Do you think your vet would give you some loxicom pain killer to give to Minou, just until you are able to take him in? Two of my cats take this as a painkiller everyday, straight from the pippet, as they love the taste of it.

Hope he gets better very soon. Would love to see a pic when you have his confidence.

Sending every good wish to the little chap, Digby & Oliver Sprout will be given a talk about counting their blessings tonight.

ninathenana Tue 11-Oct-16 09:35:54

Kitspurr a vet would not give prescription medicine without examining Minou

granjura Tue 11-Oct-16 09:57:31

Well perhaps another week of patience and I'll be able to go to vet's or call him in for initial examination.

I am freezing my t*ts out here- fed him just inside the door in the kitchen, with the door left opened so he didn't feel trapped- then after his sachet fed him bits of freshly cooked fish, disinfected eye and paw gently - then he jumped on lap and had big cuddle. As he went exploring around the kitchen, I brought his cardboard box and blankets in, just inside the door again, with door ajar ... so he knows he can get away... and just sat on computer totally ignoring him, He went around 'talking to me' and now has settled on a chair opposite me, under the table. I ma ignoring him totally so all the balls are in his court. It took so long, but daily progress now.

Brrr but it's cold- got my big fleece on and a scarf smile ah well hopefully will soon pay dividends.

phoenix can Tara please be there for the talk? Like Digby and OS she has no idea, or at least I think she has forgotten the awful existence before she took over this house around 9 years ago.

Well we still have Pudding upstairs- found with another adult cat we also adopted, Silky, and 10 babies- almost dead in a taped box by the M1/M69 junction- and taken to Cat rescue in Leicester. We adopted both mums. Sily stayed with our neighbour in UK - I often wonder if she is still around, but daren't ask. Pudding moved with us (and our old adopted mutt, Gadsby- who moved from Switzerland to UK and back again) and we later adopted old Slinky, our DD2's 15 year old Dachshund, also rescued from terrible circumstances. Both put to sleep around 17, Slinky earlier this year, some of you might remember, and GAtsby last Easter. Pudding is at least 23, but could be quite a bit older. She won't like to share ... so they will have to be kept separate- Pudding can have upstairs and the lounge, and Minou the large kitchen.

He is still in the kitchen, having been out a few times and back again - he talks quite a lot...

Waiting for the Spring to find an older rescue dog ... can't wait to go for big walks in the woods again.
