Poor little Minou
(252 Posts)Early this Summer we noticed a young Siamese cross cat lurking around with a front leg hanging off. We were really upset, but he disapperared and we thought he had died. Then just before we went off to Italy - he re-appeared- the leg had fallen off and it looked awfuls and so sore. I fed him and watered him and made him a nice den in the garden shed- but he was very wild and scared and I couldn't get anywhere near him. Thank goodness my lovely neighbour agreed to look after him whilst we were away. I went to the vet and asked him what to do- and his reply was 'let nature take its course- cats can survive major injuries if they have shelter, food and water' so we did.
Lately he has been coming to the kitchen door to 'beg' first thing in morning and early evening- and I've been talking to him a lot- and recently he's got closer and closer. 3 days ago, I cooked him some fish, and, with head bent down and hand out stretched, sitting on kitchen doorstep - I put fish in my hand and waited. He made a lot of calling noises- but finally took the plunge and I felt him taking the food from my hand. Yesterday I was able to cuddle his head- and tonight - after his sachet of cat food, I did the same with fish in my hand- and he ended up on my lap and purring for the first time.
Very moving- I cried to be honest. Stump is still very red but seems to be granualting and tissue growing well around it. Hopefully he will be inside before really cold weather and snow comes- but neighbour and myself will be spending a few hours this week-end making a much warmer and waterproof den to put at the back of shed. And hopefully we will soon be able to catch it to take to the vet to see if anything can be done to help. Bless his little cotton paws.
sadly on 3 of them ... he has gone off fora tootle, thank goodness as I was frozen! Bought him a nice cat bed with a hood this afternoon- let's hope he likes it.
If he's anything like my three -now sadly all deceased - he will ignore it and look to sleep on your bed or the sofa or wherever he fancies really- it changed from day to day
Fed him a sachet, then cooked chicken from hand and washed his eye- then massive cuddle and louder purring- he even allowed me to transfer him in my arms from stool to the armchair. Now given him some croquettes and left him on his own in the kitchen to feed on his own and explore. I've put his new bed in the shed, and I've put another blanket around the double cardboard box and blanket outside the kitchen door. It is freezing outside and the east wind is blowing- I so wish he would stay inside.
Neighbour coming to help me tomorrow with making a realy warm waterproof den in the shed- weather forecast looks better for next few days- but snow could come anytime after that.
Could you get him some vetbed to lie on, which would be warm and also moisture free if the weather turns bad?
Yes excellent idea. We will make a really sturdy warm box of layers with a very warm lining and have several vet bed liners to wash regularly- It will be at the back of the shed, so no snow or rain.
Well when I came back to the kitchen last night- I thought he was gone- but then I saw him peering from one of the dining chair under the table. DH decided that he couldn't stay the night- as he didn't have a litter tray, etc- and I had to reluctantly let him go out- with a sad heart.
This morning when I looked out of my bedroom window he wasn't waiting by the door- so I called- and he came out of the new bed I bought yesterday and put in the shed. Really surprised he adopted it so quickly.
Anyhow, sachet followed by fish from the hand, eye and paw cleaned (separate bowls with cooled boiled water and pads ready beforehand, etc)... then massive cuddle- he seems to purr louder everyday. he is out sunning himself on a garden chair outside kitchen door.
Got a litter tray ready for him, and tonight he is hopefully staying in. But he will also have his new superwarm, waterproof den in the shed.
Delightful news. You've cracked it!!!
Having had a chance to look at his poor paw from close ... the tip is so thin and raw it will just have to come off I believe.
Will phone vet about advice, see if I can get him a mild sedative early in the morning with his food and take him in so he can go straight in and not wait in waiting room. That way they will be able to get the skin and fur over properly to protect it from wounds and frost- and we will have 3 week for it to heal before we go on hols and neighbour takes over. I trust her absolutely. I wish we had known and booked our trip for late November- but nought we can do now. Cristelle will look after him splendidly, and we will keep the heating on in the kitchen and he can stay there.
He will soon see the kitchen as his own.
Yes, and Pudding will have the whole of the upstairs. The lounge as 2 doors, one into the kitchen and one into the corridor, so we will leave that one open for when she wants to come and join us. Bless her, aged 23 she is not in the mood for romance or sharing.
Spent the afternoon with DH and neighbour insulating shed with bubble wrap and double layer of cardboard- and making a really cosy den with the large wire cage we'd bought for the move, so that Pudding could have a litter tray, water and bed during the long journey. Used several layers of organic insulation panels, then double cardbox with his new bed inside and cosy bedding- then a thick layer of insulating 'carpet' and finally thick plastic layer- in the corner of shed with thick insulation at front to stop east wind ... probably in vain as he will probably move in permanently tonight ... but just in case.
Will phone vet tomorrow about making app for amputation and neutering late next week. Wish him luck- but I think he will be ok.
At 23 she is allowed not to share!
She must have been well looked after.
Minou is a lucky pussy cat, so glad he is not out there scavenging for his next meal.
Well he has settled himself on the settee in the kitchen after his evening meal and cuddle - and we left him there to chill out.
Just had to laugh so much this afternoon when a lovely GNeter wrote that she was amazed no-one has mentined 'virtue signalling' yet. She will remain anonymous- but thanks for the giggle.
Let'se see if he asks to go out at bedtime or stays put. I've got a litter tray inside for him in the cubby hole at the side of kitchen, just in case.
He's landed on his (three) feet!
Sorry, could not resist that, hope his poorly leg gets sorted out.
Thank you Jalima - yes, hopefuly he will be fine - but we will have to get that paw amputated asap.
Will Minou be fitted with a "bionic" paw? It's great news that he's settling in so well.
I think he will be fine on 3 legs- will see what vet says.
Well so much for spending hours making his den - he decided to spend the night in the kitchen instead but has now gone off on his jollies.
Good for him. That was inevitable when you think about it!!
Indeedy- well at least it's there if he ever gets caught out in rain or snow when we are not here.
I am sure that he will return this evening for food and also to settle down for a comfortable night's sleep in his new abode.
Typical cat. Ignoring the special place you made for him! Lovely that he stayed inside though. You're making terrific progress with him.
Weather has turned today- grey, cold and drizzle - just been to see if by any chance he had adopted hiw new den and bed - and yes, there he was. So he knows he can stay in or out now. Brilliant.
He has been sleeping in last few nights- and today I went to the vet to have a long chat as to where we go from there.
Decision made- he will go in tomorrow and they will give him GA and have a good look at that poor very sore paw. If there is no gangrene and they can amputate neatly- they will go ahead. If they realise the damage is really bad and would involve long suffering in getting better- they will just put him to sleep. Just had a massive cuddle and 'explained' the situation to him - he seems to understand I am doing the best by him.
Wish him luck and lets hope he will have a long happy life on 3 healthy paws. We are quite sure that he was caught in a leg trap- probably put there by a neighbour to protect his chickens from the fox. It is so so cruel and indiscriminate - and NO, no animal deserve such a horrible slow and painful death.
