So sorry to hear about Grace, I had to have my old boy Jack put to sleep last week, he was 18, it broke my heart, I've had him so long, I've also got a 9 month old pup, he's not a replacement but he's a dear little chap, Jack was my friend , he helped me when I had bad depression, I miss him so much, but I couldn't let him go on as he was getting more frail every day, and he had always been so lively, Grace was very lucky to have you to love and care for her so well, flowers

mawb you know it's OK that today has been hard, of course it has. Grace is home now, with a beautiful rose to sleep under. Why wouldn't you miss her? We had to make the same decision for our last dog, but agreed with the vet we would take our cantankerous but so loved dog home overnight so we could say a properly goodbye with our sons. We managed an hour, the anticipation was too hard. It was after closing time at the vets but I phoned in hope. He answered, said I knew it would be too hard, I'm still here so we took our dog back. I had tears for such a long while and have some now thinking about it. Everyone who has or has had a much loved animal companion will understand. Just be as you are. flowers.

Maw I was like that for weeks after my last cat was put to sleep. This was around midnight and I rang a friend and spent a few hours with her. Her cats knew that I needed solace and the two, who never came remotely near me normally, each sat on an arm of the chair. It was over 6 months before I decided that the house was too quiet and I needed company, hence the arrival of Tara.

Very special dog - but so is every dog or cat to their human.
Ah well, it is proving harder today than I expected, maybe I have been doing "too" well. <big sigh>
Tears never far from the surface.

maw flowers you will be happier when she is at home with you and you can have a chat with her whenever you want. I used to talk to my 3 in the garden. Nice to plant a rose to remember her by.

I have just had a call from the vets to say that Grace is "back" with them so I am going over to bring her ashes home.
I am in bits but will be burying her ashes under a lovely apricot rose I have bought called, appropriately, "Grace".
Please think of us this afternoon sad

Hi MAW.We did fill the dog shaped hole.Very quickly actually, and now have two amazing springer spaniels. We simply hated putting the key in the door and not being greeted by the sound of paws and unconditional love. But we didn't replace him, each dog is so unique and some so special aren't they? We rescued him when he was one and had him 14 years, and despite the most terrible start he was the gentlest of souls. Our two now have their own gorgeous temperaments and make us laugh so much.I relish their youth and vitality but already feel a twinge of sadness if I contemplate them slowing down, growing and the terrible emptiness of saying goodbye .So I cherish them whilst they are here, and the memories of all our dogs gone before. So much at the heart of the family.
And Grace's lovely face ,your sad loss, and the fact you gave her such a good home is what that unconditional love is all about. X

THE DOG
Author Unknown

When God had made the earth and sky,
The flowers and the trees.
He then made all the animals
And all the birds and bees.
And when His work was finished
Not one was quite the same.
He said, "I'll walk this earth of mine
And give each one a name."
And so He travelled land and sea
And everywhere He went,
A little creature followed Him
Until it's strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth
And in the sky and sea,
The little creature said "Dear Lord
There's not one left for me."
The Father smiled and softly said
"I've left you to the end,
I’ve turned my own name back to front
And called you Dog my friend.'

Every time one of my pets has died – whether naturally or through euthanasia, which I know was the kindest way at the right time – I have stroked and cuddled them until they were gone and asked them to say hello to those who have gone before. The tears have always fallen. The godly say that animals don't go to heaven. In that case, I don't want to go there either because if my dogs and cats aren't there, it won't be heaven for me.
