I will be collecting my cavapoo pup next weekend when she's ready to leave mum. I live mostly on my own and she will be welcome company. Catching up with family on Facebook a few days ago up popped a news article about an 11 week old spaniel pup who was mauled to death in a Cambridge park by three Lurchers off lead. The two men with them disappeared leaving the 12 year old girl walking her traumatised and having to carry the dead pup home. I was so upset when I read that and now I am dreading taking my pup for a walk when she's had all her injections in case something happens to her. Am I being paranoid about this?

Tidyskatemum - Lulu has come from a reputable breeder who has had her Cav tested for common CKC spaniel ailments and the dad poodle has been tested too. All tests negative. smile

Update: I brought Lulu home yesterday. She’s loveable but a handful as one would expect. The first night she only whined for a bit but I think the fluffy dog toy with a heartbeat and warmer comforted her off to sleep. Bedding had to be changed several times last night. I took her out of her crate three times when she whined but was too late as she’d already pooed and weed. Tonight I am going to set my alarm every three hours to take her into the bathroom where I have pee mats. It’s very cold outside so I am leaving outside toileting for a while.

How exciting Smurf.....just one piece of advice (others feel free to disagree) but I really wouldn't put off outside toileting! If you do, you will make it ten times harder in the long run.

She is a dog and has a fur coat, unless you live in Siberia it is not too cold for her to go out. Wrap up yourself but take her out for toileting asap. JMO but would never let her think it is o.k. to pee/poop in house.

Just one of the pieces of advice I heard others get with small dogs was to be very wary of giving them 'small dog' syndrome! I took this to mean to be over protective? Accept they are DOGS and dogs need to be treated like dogs not like babies. Seems to make sense to me. Mine was tiny when he arrived but he was out in the garden as soon as he arrived and out walking as soon as his inoculations were complete. Others have said, but its true...socialising IS the key to a happy dog, even if they get roughed up a bit to start with. I took mine to classes, as soon as I could and dogs would roll him about in mud! I resisted the urge to intervene and very quickly he became the ones to roll others over....Its the growing up process.

Opps...sorry...have given you 'One piece of advice' twice ha ha

I agree with Bluegal put the effort in with outside training now, you will only have to do it later.

Thanks everyone. I think it was me delaying due to the fact that in order to get into the garden we have to go through a small conservatory which is colder than outside.
I am pleased to report that Lulu is as of today going toileting outside. I have recognised the signs i.e. she circles around the pee mats by front door. I have praised her for her performances and she looks very pleased with herself. She went out with no bother from the word go. I am just dreading tonight as she can’t give me the usual signs in her crate and tends to whine after toileting in the crate. Oh well will have to see how we get on....
