Where does he go on public holidays?

I don't know about that. Cats are a law unto themselves.
We had a cat when I was a child. He was an adopted stray. For some reason, two New Year's days running, he climbed the telephone pole outside our house, go stuck and couldn't climb down. My Dad had to go and borrow the ladders from the window cleaner who lived at the bottom of our road, climb up and rescue said cat.
Fortunately it only happened twice!!

Cats schedule their AGMs to coincide with Times their owners are in all day and have company. You’re not supposed to notice as you’re so busy.

Hilda your moggy was obviously Look Out on those two occasions. As he failed miserably in his duty (by being ‘rescued’) he was voted off Look Out Duty after the second failure.

Ours appeared inside a neighbours window at 1 am ,he'd been gone 18 hours.We think he's being fed at different houses as he isn't hungry when he comes back.The neighbour saw me looking for the cat at 1am and said he doesn't stay overnight but pops in and out during the day to play with their kitten

Cat lovers always say that cats are independent, so why are they surprised when a cat 'does it's own thing'?

Oh yes ...we now have 2 strays that decided to live here ....both came in through the cat flap which we had for our previous cats ( 1 of which died of old age ...27 ! one of which died of kidney failure and old age, and one that simply disappeared and (so far 2 years) has never been seen by any one !) the first of the present strays to arrive had to get on with the others who were still here then, but after they had gonem she loved to be in charge of us, the house et al ....then another cat came in who had been left behind when a neighbour moved ....had been looked after, and neutuered, but here in France a lot of people simply say 'It's a CAT' as if it doesn't count ! The first stray will not accept the new one, so it is ME who has to get up in the middle of the night to let it in and out of the front door as the other one sleeps in the conservatory where the cat flap is .......tried many ways of getting them to stay out there together, no luck ....meanwhile, husband says, when I complain about cat staying out unti 1.30 a,m and then making a racket to come in, and out again at 6.00am ...that if I don't like it I can leave ...since he dotes on both moggies ....believe you me, I am VERY VERY tempted .....

A clue will be whether he is hungry on return - maybe someone else is feeding him as part of their celebrations - we get that, especially in the summer with our two but they hunker down as usual indoors in the winter.

ours just had his first experience of snow ,I stood at the window and laughed so much at him I had tears running down my cheeks.That makes up for the" in and out like a peep of gas "normal nights .It was hilarious .

When I was young one if our cats disappeared on Christmas Eve returning on Christmas morning dragging a very dirty & mangled raw turkey. He had obviously stayed out all night eating it. He was very proud if himself but my mother was mortified that someone living near us had lost their Christmas Dinner. Despite a lot of tentative questions to neighbours about the sort of Christmas they had we never found out where he got it. He never stole anything before or after.

Is he a Six Dinner Sid? My cat left the house every night at 10.30 on the dot and reappeared at 7.30 in the morning but never wanted breakfast. We didn't know where he went until one day it snowed. We followed his paw prints to the front door of a nearby bungalow. The old lady was letting him in for the night, feeding him first thing and letting him out for the day.

Maybe it has a radar system.
I read about a cat who stayed in a neighbour's house all day, every day. Concerned, she put a note on his collar which read, "I spend all day at No. 27, if you're worried that I'm out all day," so that the owner at least knew where it disappeared.
Next day it reappeared with a reply, "If you lived in a house with four children you'd stay out all day too!"

He is a cat, so staying out on a holiday to cause you maximum concern was probably his intention all along lol!

I have neighbours who feed my 2 cats , they take them in , over feed them and give them milk, they drive me insane, I've put notes through their door asking them to stop. I've had rows with them, my daughter's have asked them to stop, I've even had the police involved, this has been going on for years, they've done it with other people's cats, its infuriating, they had a cat for years it was obese, it died, now they don't want to have 1 of their own , as they go on holiday, don't want vet bills or responsibilities so they take mine in for hours at a time, and overnight, cats are not faithful and will go anywhere if they're getting fed, I want to add my cats are well looked after and don't need fed anywhere else, ?

I believe there are cams that you can attach to the collar which will record his antics! That would be fun, whatever he was up to!

Might be worth a try and you could possibly upload the results for our enjoyment!

Talking about wandering pets. My daughter's dog was left out in the cold a few days ago. Let out to do his business and then forgotten when everyone rushed off to pursue their various Saturday morning errands etc.

My SIL was first to arrived but didn't notice him missing until my DD came in about an hour later. It wasn't until some time after that she finally asked "Where's the dog?"

Well, long story short, after searching the entire house with much calling after and canvassing of the neighborhood, my beloved 'grandpooch' finally appeared around suppertime. He was wearing a brand new red and gray sweater and some chocolate 'gelt' tied around his collar with a note.

Alone and feeling the cold, he promptly went to the neighbor's and knocked on all their doors until he was let in. They own a large dog of their own (hence the sweater). Dogs had an all afternoon play date before he was sent back home, well fed, bearing gifts and dressed to the nines.

Cats?? As an ex cattery owner, I feel qualified to comment on their behaviour. Most love human contact. Give them their freedom and they are usually back home soon enough. They can feed themselves easily with mice or birds etc. But domesticated cats soon tire of this and look for the easy life with a tin of Sheba and a cuddle. I miss having a cat but now is the time to travel worry free.

Catterygirl....I too am a cat lover. We lost our girl Sophie to old age over a year ago (21 years of love). Like you, we now enjoy our freedom, so no more pets. Thanks for the nice comment about my post BTW.
