Before I start I would just say I am not bad mouthing vets. Ours is marvellous, have been with them for over 30 years with different dogs and have complete faith in them. However, we have 2 rescued greyhounds at the moment. One is nearly 14 and on long term medication for arthritis. It suits her so well and she is able to live a normal, active life whilst on it. However, this medication must only be supplied by prescription and to buy this medication from my vet costs me £2.50 a pill, I was buying a months supply for £70. An eye watering amount to find each month. I have found that many people in our situation are not aware that if you ask your vet to write a prescription they have to do it but will make a charge, ours charges £15, but it lasts for 6 months. You can then go on line and source your own supplier. I go to a good on line supplier run by a vet and I can buy the exact same medication 60 tablets for £39.41. My vets price for 60 tabs would have been £140. Every 6 months I get a renewed prescription and download it to my supplier. If you can't download you can send the prescription to them. I don't begrudge my dogs anything but there is a limit you can afford to spend. Several people have told me they have done this after I told them and the difference it has made for them.
