Cow Tails

Fresh oxtails, I would say not a good idea!

Cooked pigs ears, available from good stores are a much better idea.

We feed fresh oxtail as a treat in place of a meal for our Cavalier SAM. BUT we roast them and choose a mid sized piece , not a tiny piece.

BUT we have done this since he was a pup .

“Pizzles” are popular here (don’t ask)

My dog loved pigs ears. We bought them from our local pet shop. She loved them. Pizzles were never a popular treat though. I know what they are maw. ??

Our collie ate all kinds of raw meat and bones from being a puppy, with no problems.
It might not be such a good thing for dogs used to prepared food.
We used to look after another dog who often dug up various parts of dead animals, buried for some time and very smelly .
No problems at all.

I’ve never seen cows tails for sale. Someone once advised us not to give the dog pigs ears as they are full of fat. The f they ever get any meat it’s always cooked first (apart from the dead rotting stuff the springer finds and wolfs down as if he’d never been fed ....)

Know all about dogs bringing in dead or rotting animal bones/flesh. The older Yorkie (and cat) used to do this. Yorkie learned that I didn't like him bringing it home, so he used to have a good chew on something outside under a bush. Both Yorkie and cat were strays, so who knows what they lived off before living with me - or should it be, I lived with them! Will check other pet forums, but thank you for advice.

I have a feeling the cows tails may not actually be tails.....more likely to be pizzles but the shop couldn’t admit to it! Cow tails/ox tails are pretty valuable human food!

Hi Midgey. The vet said to me last week that whatever I was giving the Yorkie, keep doing it. He has excellent skin, eyes, bloods, heart, lungs, etc. I feed him lots of part cooked vegetables with freshly cooked meat or fish. I bake biscuits for him to chew on whenever I put something in the oven for we humans. I found it not only cheaper to feed dogs/cat like this, but I do not like the additives that go into dog food - or human food. I am also vegetarian.

That’s great, even if the tails are pizzles they are healthy for dogs! What I meant was that the shop was being ‘too nice’ to use the proper name! Glad your dog is healthy and he’s obviously in a very loving home.

Oops sorry midgey just read back and misunderstood. It should be obvious oxtails have vertebrae , the other don’t!

Apologies Midgey . I didn't mean to sound so pompous. The written word, and all that. Also trying to keep post short. Just checked the packet and it actually says "Beef Tails". I am now sending a packet on to my friend in Scotland, who is extra knowledgeable on dogs, for her opinion. Perhaps a contradiction also that I feed the dog/s fish and meat when I don't it this. I should have got a goldfish for a pet. Best regards.
