All cats, especially the females, know that humans are stupid, so she was only trying to get you to understand that it was a present.

I rejoice to say that Trold did not bring me the magpie he recently caught, but left it on the common on the other side of our garden fence where I don't feel obliged to do anything about it. It can quietly return to the dust there.

I know he caught it because he hates magpies having been scared by one when he was a kitten and it was laid as he always leaves his birds.

Back in the days when we had a cat (Frederick) living with us, I was using the tiny gardeners loo by the back door when I noticed the old bit of carpet in there was sort of twitching. I lifted my feet as a mole appeared from under the edge. Unharmed and lively it gave me a bit of a problem to get up, adjust my dress and squirm around the door to find some gauntlets and remove the creature.

Fred also brought me live mice to play with during the night when I was paralysed with a slipped disc and having to sleep downstairs. He was a very caring cat.

Mia had a grass snake a couple of years ago, luckily it was OK, and I took it back round to the canal bank at the front. She wasn`t happy with me, just as she isn`t when I recue live mice from her as well.

Naughty Scampy!

Well, my Scampy has just brought me a grass snake! Just came up and deposited it outside the back door. Luckily it played dead and seems uninjured, so we could rescue it.

Eek! This was a blackbird which they did manage to get out after it pooed all over the place!

Jalima I posted previously about the time OS brought a live magpie into the kitchen and then decided he didn't want it after all!

Hmm, dead mice aren't too bad. They go straight in the dustbin! It's when I come downstairs a to find a selection of entrails on my kitchen floor that I object strongly. One of the cats, usually the Ginger Ninja (aged 15) is usually responsible. The Dark Destroyer (aged 4) can't usually be bothered but either way, I have to clear it up quickly before the Darling Dog gets involved- vets' bills are the last thing I need! confused

Jalima1108 Wed 18-Apr-18 19:54:38

At least they were dead before they were brought inside phoenix, not a dear little bunny still alive and squealing (when rescued promptly died of shock) or a large bird which flew around and pooed everywhere!

You could, however, practise in the garden and see if she will respond to 'Fetch'!

There could well be several dead rodents Phoenix as when my DD refused to let her cat come in when carrying shrews etc, a week later found a stash of them behind the wheelie bin.

She sounds such an entertaining cat! She's probably trying to train you in how to hunt. I expect she's hoping for a bit of gratitude and praise, and then maybe expecting you to share with her.

Picturing her going on that circuit lol, wonder what was going through her mind....

Charleygirl Wed 18-Apr-18 18:38:48

Is Minnie capable of hunting herself or do you think that OS is the hunter and she picks up his rejects? She does not give up.

phoenix Wed 18-Apr-18 18:10:51

Thanks for the replies!

She is a real character, I've had cats all my life, but never one like her. No wonder she was described on the Cats Protection site as "lively and playful" grin

She and Oliver Sprout get on very well, but although small, she seems to have the upper paw!

Love it, had me laughing out loud. Most impressed with Minnie, hope you gave her a treat for determination. Don't suppose she was too happy with you for throwing her gift away grin.

Charleygirl Wed 18-Apr-18 17:27:25

Minnie was determined that you would have something succulent for lunch but she was obviously very disappointed. Maybe when Mr. P arrives home this evening he may receive another offering as you obviously do not like her gifts.

Hello all,

On Sunday Oliver Sprout appeared on the kitchen windowsill and for a brief moment I thought he was sporting a rather impressive moustache, but when I put my glasses on I discovered it was a small dead rodent, blush ( a shrew I think, definitely not a mouse).

I refused to let him in, and after a while he disappeared, probably a bit put out that I wasn't overjoyed by his gift. He reappeared a while later, sans rodent, so I let him in and normal relations were resumed. smile

Fast forward to this morning, a lovely spring day, and my day off. So, cats fed, kitchen window left open I came upstairs with my tea to fire up the computer and have a look at GN. I heard the patter of paws, and found Minnie on the landing standing proudly beside a very dead creature, that looked vaguely familiar. I picked it up in a bit of loo roll, and threw it out of the window into the back garden.

Ten minutes later, Minnie reappeared, again with her "prize". I repeated the procedure with the loo roll and open window. I was absolutely stunned when she appeared with it for a THIRD time!! shock This time I wrapped it up and went down and put in the wheelie bin.

So, the question is, have I got the worlds best retrieving cat (bearing in mind I was throwing it out of an upstairs back window, so she had to go down, out through the kitchen window at the front, then round the side of the house to the back, find the corpse, and then do the trip in reverse) or do cats keep a secret stash of dead rodents for days when they CBA to hunt, but feel the need to impress?
