The previous life of cats...?

Evening all.

I have posted before about our "New" cat, Minnie, and her rather odd habits!

Well, to summarise, she has kleptomaniac tendencies, but only with regard to items related to washing up confused

She has helped herself to the odd rubber glove, quite a few of those white sort of "knitted" dish cloths, one of those metal scrubby things, more washing up sponges than I can count (I think the staff in Lidl think I must have some sort of fetish, the amount I buy blush).

It sort of came to a head when I found a tea towel on the bedroom floor hmm Mr P denied all knowledge!

I am wondering if she might have been a scullery maid in a previous life?

We used to have a cat called Dusty. She was tiny and grey and was my husband's kitten from Day One. In the morning we sat in bed drinking Yakult and would throw the tin foil lid on the quilt cover, sending Dusty into a "fetch it" frenzy. Such happy memories. Sadly she was poisoned or run over on Christmas Day. Then Tabitha came into my life rolling over for a tummy rub from a stranger. He used to love strolling past our cattery with head held high showing off to the cats that he was free to come and go as he pleased! He never acknowledged the guest cats in any shape or form except indifference. Sadly he wasted away, possibly from poison too.

We had one cat who would bring live rabbits home, worst thing was the dead guinea pig left under a sideboard (60s style), DH quickly disposed of that, never found out who it belonged to.

One of our cats would growl like a dog if you gave her meat (piece of chicken etc), she also brought back a carrier bag with barbecued chicken bits in it, part of a joint, bone & all. She was such a feminine cat, tiny & delicate, I think she must have been part alley catgrin

My year-old cat has a thing about dusters. Doesn't matter if it's the traditional type used with polish or a 'wood wipe' (which he'll retrieve out of the waste paper basket if he spots it!).
Both will do.
Haven't worked out a way to get him to do the dusting yet, though!

A neighbour's cat used to spend most of his time with us. He had a chair with a cushion on it next to a radiator. DH would put the CH on specially for him.

I love telling this story because it’s so extrodinary. It happened quite some time ago, where I worked in a small city,a colleagues cat went missing. She posted leaflets through neighbours doors, about the missing cat,to no avail. However a neighbour said he had taken a journey to a small village, about 6 miles from the colleagues home.Had heard a noise under the bonnet, and on lifting a cat had jumped out,So colleague put notice in the local post office about the cat.About a week later, the missing cat turned up,not at home but sitting on the fire escape of our workplace in the centre of the city! How amazing is that, and how happy,it occured on Xmas eve,and the colleague cooked a Turkey that night left it to cool went out,on returning the cat had eaten part of the Turkey! It really was a Xmas miracle. How on earth she got there will remain a mystery.

Funny isn’t it?Must be hunting skills put to another use.

My cat likes my washing up sponge - it is often found in the hallway or living room. Lately she has taken a liking to an old pair of slippers (not presently worn) and gets one out of my wardrobe and brings it downstairs. She also loves rolling in freshly ironed washing!

My husband used to put used teabags on his roses, said they were good for them, and our cat used to bring me presents of the dried up bags but not before he’d batted them around the kitchen floor with the result that little tea leaves were would be scattered all over and I’d be left with an empty teabag!

My two brought home a Yorkshire terrier, owner banged on door saying your cats have stolen my dog smile

My cat used to bring home gloves and socks, particularly a child's football glove, and he was very fond of large blusher brushes, which he liked to wash and groom. He also liked boiled sweet lollies, (bought for Trick and Treat gifts and left by the front door), which we found all over the house, usually under the furniture.

One of ours is a sock thief , but he only takes DHs socks.
Previously we had a female cat who brought back scrunchies if we threw them for her, but never retrieved her soft toys or balls.

I've noticed however that cats tend to play the same games as their predecessors even when they never knew them, and this is not because we taught them the game.

As a child I had a cat who sucked clothes, she was very fond of woolly cardigans and of nightdresses!

A previous cat arrived home one Sunday lunch time witha cooked chicken leg ,,,,,never dared ask the neighbours if they had missed it but I would have loved to have seen their faces! we now have two that were strays ..both been neutured, but one still thinks he is wild and refuses to eat his tuna, or cat food ,,,twice last week he left once a huge RAT onthe mat (bigger than him !) and then a RABBIT .....I got him a collar with a bell but so far he hasn't stayed still enough for me to get it on !

Janweb65 Sun 06-May-18 14:54:27

Yes we do miss them terribly. Our big ginger Tom now sadly gone was a real character. I went into work one day and told my colleagues I'd had a row with him. He was sitting on the worktop and I told him to get down and he replied with 'oooOOH' like a sulky teenager every time I said get down, eventually i put him on the floor and he walked off grumbling to himself and giving me dirty looks. Work mates thought I'd gone mad but you have to have a cat to understand their personalities. Miss him so much.

My two ginger toms, Gilbert & Sullivan, used to follow me everywhere I went. They even walked me to the bus stop then toddle back home after I had safely boarded. My neighbours witnessed this on a regular basis. Both my lovely pets have gone now. How we miss them

Think our Oscar is my late son! Very fussy with his food and likes to have your attention.

SussexGirl60 Sun 06-May-18 13:23:38

My beloved cat isn’t with me anymore sadly, but I hadn’t realised how they can imitate. Seeing your post janweb65, reminds me of how my cat used to make the exact sound of a seagull! So clever!?

Janweb65 Sun 06-May-18 13:02:57

My cat doesn't steal but I think she was a headmistress in a previous life. She's VERY bossy and orders my husband about! His name is Alan and her loud mieow sound like 'Al' she calls him like this several times to be fed and if he ignores her her next 'command' sounds like 'NOW' it's hilarious. He jumps to it every time! ?

I had a wonderful cat who, on days when the weather was dreadful, bitterly cold and pouring with rain, would arrive home warm and dry and smelling quite distinctly of lady's handcream!

inishowen Sun 06-May-18 10:45:31

My son has just acquired a stray cat. First of all he said it would be an outdoor cat, the next day it was raining so it was allowed in the utility room with the heat turned on, the next day it was in the lounge! Cats are amazingly clever at finding a home for themselves. As yet we don't know what habits it has, or even if it's male of female.

My daughter had a female cat and a tomcat came a-calling bearing a gift of a pound of bacon wrapped in greaseproof paper!

Venus Sun 06-May-18 10:30:23

My cat must be really boring, he sticks to bringing mice, dead, or alive and the odd bird!

Kiwibird Sun 06-May-18 10:24:38

Shoes! From other houses and always much bigger than her! We've had: sports shoes, slippers, flip-flops, oh yes and various kinds of hat. She's only a young cat and not very big so it's a big trek for her to carry a man's trainer in her mouth along the road, into our garden and up the back steps. Maybe it's the feline mothering instinct. I hope the kitten was still alive Purplepoppies!

muddynails Sun 06-May-18 10:20:24

exactly what I was thinking Elegran.
All our neighbours cat did was spray on the curtains, wonder what he was in previous life?

Purplepoppies Sun 06-May-18 09:56:18

My friend had to set up a FB page for her cat & his kleptomaniac exploits so she can reunite people with their bras and knickers, photos, baby toys, hats gloves and scarves! He even 'stole' a neighbours (4 week old) kitten!
He's bought home other more unsavoury items... used condoms, spent fireworks and sanitary products ?.
Life is definitely exciting in her house ?

jusnoneed Sun 06-May-18 08:20:35

My friend kept finding pieces of her sons clothes, usually on the kitchen floor though sometimes on the stairs. Pant's/socks even t shirts. She was annoyed at him for dropping and then leaving them on the floor rather than putting in the washing machine. When he said he hadn't put them there the mystery deepened until one day quite by chance she happened to see one of her cats in his bedroom helping himself to a tshirt he'd left on the bed. He struggled to get it down the stairs and gave up when he got to the bottom, walked off leaving the shirt on the floor lol.
